Book The Emergence of Kurdish Nationalism and the Sheikh Said Rebellion 1880 1925

Download or read book The Emergence of Kurdish Nationalism and the Sheikh Said Rebellion 1880 1925 written by Robert Olson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter of the nineteenth century was crucial for the development of Kurdish nationalism. It coincided with the reign of Abdulhamid II (1876-1909), who emphasized Pan-Islamic policies in order to strengthen the Ottoman Empire against European and Russian imperialism, The Pan-Islamic doctrines of the Ottoman Empire enabled sheikhs (religious leaders) from Sheikh Ubaydallah of Nehri in the 1870s and 1880s to Sheikh Said in the 1920s-to become the principal nationalist leaders of the Kurds. This represented a new development in Middle Eastern and Islamic history and began an important historical pattern in the Middle East long before the emergence of the religiousnationalist leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. This is the first work in any Western language dealing with the development of Kurdish nationalism during this period and is supported with documentation not previously utilized, principally from the Public Record Office in Great Britain. In addition, the author provides much new material on Turkish, Armenian, Iranian, and Arab history and new insights into Turkish-Armenian relations during the most crucial era of the history of these two peoples.

Book A Muslim American Slave

Download or read book A Muslim American Slave written by Omar Ibn Said and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to a wealthy family in West Africa around 1770, Omar Ibn Said was abducted and sold into slavery in the United States, where he came to the attention of a prominent North Carolina family after filling “the walls of his room with piteous petitions to be released, all written in the Arabic language,” as one local newspaper reported. Ibn Said soon became a local celebrity, and in 1831 he was asked to write his life story, producing the only known surviving American slave narrative written in Arabic. In A Muslim American Slave, scholar and translator Ala Alryyes offers both a definitive translation and an authoritative edition of this singularly important work, lending new insights into the early history of Islam in America and exploring the multiple, shifting interpretations of Ibn Said’s narrative by the nineteenth-century missionaries, ethnographers, and intellectuals who championed it. This edition presents the English translation on pages facing facsimile pages of Ibn Said’s Arabic narrative, augmented by Alryyes’s comprehensive introduction, contextual essays and historical commentary by leading literary critics and scholars of Islam and the African diaspora, photographs, maps, and other writings by Omar Ibn Said. The result is an invaluable addition to our understanding of writings by enslaved Americans and a timely reminder that “Islam” and “America” are not mutually exclusive terms. This edition presents the English translation on pages facing facsimile pages of Ibn Said’s Arabic narrative, augmented by Alryyes’s comprehensive introduction and by photographs, maps, and other writings by Omar Ibn Said. The volume also includes contextual essays and historical commentary by literary critics and scholars of Islam and the African diaspora: Michael A. Gomez, Allan D. Austin, Robert J. Allison, Sylviane A. Diouf, Ghada Osman, and Camille F. Forbes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this book is to unearth the Mosul Incident, place it in a historical narrative and introduce it to the literature. Despite creating a historical turning point, the incident has not attracted the necessary attention in neither the Ottoman nor Iraqi historiography until now. By interpreting the preferences, policies and practices associated with this particular incident, the book is engaged to analyze the Post-Constitutional power shifts, perceptions of collective violence and the origins of Arab-Kurdish Dispute. The banishment and murder of Sheikh Said Barzanji who was the family head of Sadaat al-Barzanjiyya as the most influential religious organization of region, created a critical threshold in the history of Mosul. As the urban shootout on January 5 turned into a provincial bloodshed, Kurdish Sayyids, tribes and religious orders consolidated and revolted against the Ottoman authorities. Governors who were polarized as Anti Sâdât and Pro Sâdât allegedly misconducted their offices and misguided the authorities of law enforcement and judiciary. By overcoming the historical rupture between Ottoman Mosul and Modern Iraq, the book introduces an analytical framework to associate the origins of collective violence and ethnic fragmentation experienced in today’s Iraq with the past.

Book Everyday Occupations

Download or read book Everyday Occupations written by Kamala Visweswaran and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, political conflict and militarization have come to constitute a global social condition rather than a political exception. Military occupation increasingly informs the politics of both democracies and dictatorships, capitalist and formerly socialist regimes, raising questions about its relationship to sovereignty and the nation-state form. Israel and India are two of the world's most powerful postwar democracies yet have long-standing military occupations. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey have passed through periods of military dictatorship, but democracy has yielded little for their ethnic minorities who have been incorporated into the electoral process. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh (like India, Pakistan, and Turkey) have felt the imprint of socialism; declarations of peace after long periods of conflict in these countries have not improved the conditions of their minority or indigenous peoples but rather have resulted in "violent peace" and remilitarization. Indeed, the existence of standing troops and ongoing state violence against peoples struggling for self-determination in these regions suggests the expanding and everyday nature of military occupation. Such everydayness raises larger issues about the dominant place of the military in society and the social values surrounding militarism. Everyday Occupations examines militarization from the standpoints of both occupier and occupied. With attention to gender, poetics, satire, and popular culture, contributors who have lived and worked in occupied areas in the Middle East and South Asia explore what kinds of society are foreclosed or made possible by militarism. The outcome is a powerful contribution to the ethnography of political violence. Book Samaa Glorifying God Almighty Allah and His Holy Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him with Sweet Voice Tambourine

Download or read book Samaa Glorifying God Almighty Allah and His Holy Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him with Sweet Voice Tambourine written by Anwar Haroon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the name of Allah the Most beneficent and Most Merciful All the praise to Allah and His Holy Prophet Muhammad peace be on him. Allah says in holy Quran: Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth glorifies Allah, the King (of everything), Holy, All-Mighty, All-Wise. Holy Quran 62:1 Since I read this verse of Holy Quran and its meaning, I was pondering while everything in the universe is praising Allah almighty, why are we not able to hear it? As my thinking and knowledge matured, I realized that every element has a molecule and its own atomic structure with its own nucleus with electron, proton and neutron which forms the particular element. Few electrons in the atomic structure circulate around its nucleus which can be seen with the help of an electron microscope. Then I realized that each element has a life of its own and human ears are unable to hear the movement of the electrons in it. It is surprising as Holy Quran mentions that the animal beings, plants, mountains, and the birds used to join Prophet Dawood (David) alaihissalaam in his praising of Allah Almighty and the mountains would swing. It is also said, that a camel had complained to Holy Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam about his master mistreating him. It is also said that the plants moved away with their roots to cover Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam when he had to attend to natures call in a field. It is said that Hazrat Ali raziallahu anhu could tell what the conch said when it was blown. Hazrat Jalaluddin Rumi went into a trance upon hearing the rhythmic sound at the shop of a gold beater. It is also proven that music even affects the milk-giving animals to increase its output, load-bearing animals can carry load without getting tired early, hunters catch the deer that go under trance of music and even plants bear more fruits. Well, the best rhythmic sound is of pronouncing the verses of Holy Quran with the best human voice, which was even liked by our Holy Prophet Peace be on him. Even the kuffar, non believers, used to hide and hear the recitation of Holy Quran and enjoy it. Next enjoyable is poetry with meaningful words and later is the music created by lifeless instruments. Our Holy Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam has permitted singing with tambourine. He, peace be on him, used to enjoy good poetry and he even permitted his companion Hazrat Hassaan bin Thabit to recite a poetry condemning kuffar sitting on the pulpit of the mosque. Music is permitted in almost all religions and the Hindus of India in particular have developed it as an art. The Muslim Sufis of Chishtia Tareeq have also adapted rhythmic poetry and Hazrat Ameer Khusroo, may Allah bless him, has invented certain Raagaas and even developed certain musical instruments. Hence it is proven that lifeless instruments create rhythm which praises Allah Almighty. Even human beings praise Allah Almighty and His Holy Prophet peace be on him through their rhythmic poetry, which serves them to get closer to Allaahu Taala. It should be noted that music could be even used wrongly by people just to satisfy their lust and increase their devilish thoughts. For this reason, the Sufis have laid certain rules to gain only the spiritual benefits and keep them away from its negative effects. It is still seen that few deviated Sufis are using music for a wrong cause and this has to be stopped. In this context, I have collected quotations from Holy Quran and Ahadeeth, sayings of famous and rightly guided scholars and Sufis on the topic Rhythmic poetry and music. I hope this booklet shall remove the misunderstanding from everyones mind and provide guidance. I pray that Allah Almighty be pleased and accept my endeavors in this regard and may Allahu Taala send His praises upon His Holy Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam and his progeny and companions, Aameen. Book excerpt: 'Outstanding, illuminating, compelling ... a riveting read' Peter Frankopan, Sunday Times Islamic civilization was once the envy of the world. From a succession of glittering, cosmopolitan capitals, Islamic empires lorded it over the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and swathes of the Indian subcontinent. For centuries the caliphate was both ascendant on the battlefield and triumphant in the battle of ideas, its cities unrivalled powerhouses of artistic grandeur, commercial power, spiritual sanctity and forward-looking thinking. Islamic Empires is a history of this rich and diverse civilization told through its greatest cities over fifteen centuries, from the beginnings of Islam in Mecca in the seventh century to the astonishing rise of Doha in the twenty-first. It dwells on the most remarkable dynasties ever to lead the Muslim world - the Abbasids of Baghdad, the Umayyads of Damascus and Cordoba, the Merinids of Fez, the Ottomans of Istanbul, the Mughals of India and the Safavids of Isfahan - and some of the most charismatic leaders in Muslim history, from Saladin in Cairo and mighty Tamerlane of Samarkand to the poet-prince Babur in his mountain kingdom of Kabul and the irrepressible Maktoum dynasty of Dubai. It focuses on these fifteen cities at some of the defining moments in Islamic history: from the Prophet Mohammed receiving his divine revelations in Mecca and the First Crusade of 1099 to the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 and the phenomenal creation of the merchant republic of Beirut in the nineteenth century.

Book Historical Traumas among Armenian Kurdish and Turkish People of Anatolia

Download or read book Historical Traumas among Armenian Kurdish and Turkish People of Anatolia written by Nermin Soyalp and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deep wounds that exist from long-standing conflicts between Turks, Kurds, and Armenians have not yet been sufficiently addressed and healed. Nermin Soyalp explains the collective traumas and their significant psychosocial impacts in terms of the potential for reconciliation among these politically conflicted groups. Discussion centres on the transgenerational implications of the Balkan wars of 1912-1913, the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917, the Greco-Turco war of 1920-1922, the formation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the population exchange with the Balkans in 1924, the conflict between the Turkish government and Kurdish identity since the formation of the Republic, as well as the impacts of assimilation policies on minorities. Drawing on the complexities of history, psychology, and identity, this book elucidates how collectively and historically shared traumas become inherently more complex, and more difficult to address, generation by generation. Epistemologies of ignorance in Turkey have suppressed the transgenerational experiences of trauma and prevented healing modalities. The Turkish state and society have consciously and unconsciously denied historical realities such as the Armenian genocide and Kurds ethnopolitical rights. The result is a collective dehumanization that fuels further trauma and conflicts. The collective traumas of Anatolia have impacted its society at multiple levels -- psychological, physical, economic, cultural, political, and institutional. The author, a dialogue facilitator for the non-profit Healing the Wounds of History organisation, proposes systemic healing modalities that address the dynamics at play. The research that underpins this work is highly relevant to the healing of other historical and cultural traumas.
