So when Irene's little white lie about a fake detective named Sherlock Holmes turns into a real case from an actual paying client, Marty is all in. Rebecca Lowery was an opera singer in life and, according to her sister, who hires the famous detective to find her, a diva with capital D. When her body goes missing after a supposedly accidental fall, Marty and Irene can think of several people who might want the diva to disappear permanently—especially if her missing body is actually hiding evidence of her murder. Is it the boyfriend with a temper and a shady record, the jealous understudy who's now stealing the show, the creepy undertaker with possible ties to the underworld, or the estranged sister herself who now inherits everything? Marty and Irene aim to find out, even while trying to keep cool around the hot ME, Dr. Watson, and dodging questions from the Irregulars blogger, Wiggins, about the mysterious man behind the name Sherlock Holmes. Book The Alternative Sherlock Holmes

Download or read book The Alternative Sherlock Holmes written by Peter Ridgway Watt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1887 and 1927, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote sixty Sherlock Holmes stories, and his great Canon has become the most praised, most studied, and best-known chapter in the history of detective fiction. Over twenty thousand publications pertaining to the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon are known to have been published, most of them historical and critical studies. In addition, however, almost since the first stories appeared, such was their uniqueness and extraordinary attraction that other authors began writing stories based on or derived from them. A new genre had appeared: pastiches; parodies; burlesques; and stories that attempted to copy or rival the great detective himself. As the field widened, there was hardly a year in the twentieth century in which new short stories or novels did not appear. Many hundreds are now known to have been published, some of them written by authors well-known for their work in other literary fields. The non-canonical Sherlock Holmes literature not only constitutes a literary field of considerable historical interest, but includes many stories that are both enjoyable and fascinating in their own right. Although a large bibliography on these stories exists, and a few limited anthologies have been published, no attempt has previously been made to collect them all and discuss them comprehensively. The Alternative Sherlock Holmes does so: it provides a new and valuable approach to the Sherlock Holmes literature, as well as making available many works that have for years remained forgotten. Presented as an entertaining narrative, of interest to both the aficionado and the scholar, it provides full bibliographic data on virtually all the known stories in the field.

Book Sherlock Holmes and The Shadows of St Petersburg

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes and The Shadows of St Petersburg written by Daniel D Victor and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A psychological account of a crime" - that's how Fyodor Dostoyevsky described his novel Crime and Punishment, which tells of two horrific axe murders in St. Petersburg. It becomes much more than a mere "account," however, when a pair of dead bodies turn up in London's East End, their heads split open by an axe-blade. To Scotland Yard, the crimes are murders to solve. To Sherlock Holmes, they present an intriguing puzzle. But to the literary man, Dr. John H. Watson, they seem a deliberate re-staging of the brutal murders depicted in Dostoyevsky's narrative. If Watson is right, what can be the purpose behind an actual recreation of the fictional killings? Blocking the answer to that question is a mysterious assortment of English and Russian eccentrics, and one can only wonder if the startling revelation at the end will be dramatic enough to set matters straight.

Book Unlocking the Great Mormon Mystery

Download or read book Unlocking the Great Mormon Mystery written by Robert Thurston and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A professional problem solver investigates Mormon origins through the eyes of Bible critics, forensic scientists, logicians, statisticians, and above all, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Based on these sources, Part 1 has important lessons in methodology, in non-technical language, for scholars and students of any ancient religious literature, including the Bible and the Book of Mormon. The remainder of the book applies these simple methods to the Book of Mormon, reconstructing the origins of the book in agreement with all of the evidence. It incorporates the work of the finest Mormon scholars and the most talented non-Mormon researchers. Many puzzling anomalies which have defied scholars on both sides are here explained for the first time. Yet the book doesn't claim to have the final answers. The concluding sections show what work remains to be done, especially by Mormon and non-Mormon scholars, working together. The book is written not only for scholars, but for average readers of the Book of Mormon, and even for non-Mormons. It should be of interest to anyone who loves a good mystery story, and is eager to see how it all comes out in the end.

Late 1895, and Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion Dr John Watson are called upon to investigate a missing persons case. But this is just the start of an investigation that will draw the pair into contact with a shadowy organisation talked about in whispers, known only as the ‘Order of the Gash.’ As more people go missing in a similar fashion, the clues point to a sinister asylum in France and to the underworld of London. However, it is an altogether different underworld that Holmes will soon discover – as he comes face to face not only with those followers who do the Order’s bidding on Earth, but those who serve it in Hell: the Cenobites. Holmes’ most outlandish adventure to date, one that has remained shrouded in secrecy until now, launches him headlong into Clive Barker’s famous Hellraising universe… and things will never be the same again. With an introduction by Hellraiser II actress Barbie Wilde.

Book Sherlock Holmes A Death in Venice and other cases

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes A Death in Venice and other cases written by Ted Riccardi and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson traverse the British Isles and the Italian peninsula in a rousing series of new adventures. After a thrilling jaunt in the Far East, Holmes and Watson return to England to address an inheritance left by one of Watson’s relatives in Cornwall, half of which is entrusted to Sherlock Holmes. Financially secure, the two are now free to spend as much time on Baker Street and the Continent as they please, and the duo find themselves as comfortable in Rome on the banks of the Tiber as they do on the Thames. As Holmes rationalizes and ratiocinates his way through adventure after adventure, from The Case of Two Bohemes to A Singular Event in Tranquebar, it is all in a day’s work, until clues surface that his great nemesis, Professor James Moriarty, might still be alive . . . “There’s no way to dance around it: Ted Riccardi’s work is absolutely brilliant. It is as if he is channeling Conan Doyle. Once you’re a few pages into these stories, you would swear that these were newly discovered manuscripts, unearthed by Conan Doyle’s estate. Or, better yet, I had the feeling that I had stumbled upon some pulp magazines where Conan Doyle was still writing. Riccardi has it all down – the cadence, the language, everything. He doesn’t try to subtly update Holmes for the modern audience, either. It is as if each and every tale was written at the turn of the century, and not the twenty-first.” Ted Riccardi is a professor emeritus in the Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University. He has served as the counselor of cultural affairs at the United States embassy in New Delhi. Ted and his wife split their time between New York City, New Mexico and Nepal.
