Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sheer Buffoonery: How Hospitals Kill Patients" is a stunning, no-holds barred expose on the hospital industry. For the first time ever, a nurse exposes the shocking mismanagement, sheer incompetence and raw greed in our nation's hospitals. Let's review just some of the standard buffoonery found in hospitals: You need oxygen but the hospital didn't purchase enough oxygen flow regulators so you'll have to gasp on room air until your nurse manages to find one somewhere. There is no security in a hospital, so the flasher in room 2108 was able to freely walk into your room in the middle of the night and expose himself to you. You got an infection in your incision because the NA wore the same pair of gloves with you that she had on when she dug out the bowel impaction patient in room 2314. In the middle of the night, some male tech wheeled you down to the basement, alone, to give you an enema you didn't need. You desperately need assistance to the bathroom but your nurse is busy in the morgue struggling to shove a dead patient onto one of the slabs. The lab refused to run your crucial lab tests because your Official Patient Stamper Plate Card was misplaced and they didn't want to handwrite in your information. Your nurse wasn't with you when you suffered a massive heart attack because she was at the nurse's station fielding calls from the general public like this: "I feel sick. Do you think I have the flu that's going around?" And last but not least, your incision is going to rip open as soon as you get home because your nurse couldn't find enough steri-strips to apply after she removed your staples."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Why of Music was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In his many tears of teaching and writing about music Professor Ferguson has given much thought to the question of the why of music — why does music affect us as it does, why are we deeply moved by some music by not by other music, what is it about music that "sends" us, and where does it send us? In this book he explores such questions in depth and provides intriguing answers. The discussions are presented in the form of dialogues between the author and several friends. As Professor Ferguson explains, the book is intended to take the reader on a guided tour, a tour which follows, in part, the familiar roads of formal music appreciation but which leads more often into byways where, almost hidden by the brilliant Hows that line the more familiar roads, lurks the essential Why of music. He describes this Why as the fertilizing commerce between music and human experience—a portrayal, not of the tangible facts of experience, but of the concern aroused by our encounter with those facts. He explains that while avant-garde abstractionism is concerned only with music as art—a concern too specialized for the general music lover to grasp and too narrow to sustain interest—the Why of enduring music lies in its endeavor to portray experience as it lives in Everyman's mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive Order 9981, issued by President Harry Truman on July 26, 1948, desegregated all branches of the United States military by decree. EO 9981 is often portrayed as a heroic and unexpected move by Truman. But in reality, Truman's history-making order was the culmination of more than 150 years of legal, political, and moral struggle. ?Beginning with the Revolutionary War, African Americans had used military service to do their patriotic duty and to advance the cause of civil rights. The fight for a desegregated military was truly a long war-decades of protest and labor highlighted by bravery on the fields of France, in the skies over Germany, and in the face of deep-seated racism on the military bases at home. Today, the military is one of the most truly diverse institutions in America. ?In The Double V, Rawn James, Jr.the son and grandson of African American veteransexpertly narrates the remarkable history of how the strugge for equality in the military helped give rise to their fight for equality in civilian society. Taking the reader from Crispus Attucks to President Barack Obama, The Double V illuminates the African American military tradition as a metaphor for their unique and dynamic role in American history.
