Book excerpt: ""The value of this book cannot be overstated. As a student, many years ago, there were no comprehensive textbooks on sheep medicine, so I was lucky to have Professor Abbott as an inspiring lecturer. This book is needed by students!" Following on from his first book, Sheep Veterinary Practice remains the ideal reference for veterinarians in farm animal practice, veterinary and animal science students, agriculturalists, and sheep producers. Principally addressing sheep health, welfare, and production matters in Australia, it covers issues and clinical practice of relevance in many countries of the world where sheep are raised. Sheep veterinary specialist Professor Kym Abbott informs the reader of the science underpinning the occurrence of disease syndromes, giving special attention to commonly investigated problems related to nutrition, reproduction, and helminth diseases. Other disease conditions of sheep are discussed in subsequent chapters; first on the basis of presenting signs in the case of lameness and sudden death - conditions in which signs can be attributed to disorders of a variety of body systems - and then on a body-systems basis. This new edition thoroughly revises and expands on the previous text, adding a review of the systems and strategies available to improve the welfare of sheep in extensive farming systems, a chapter on pain relief, analgesia and anaesthesia for sheep, and a chapter on metacestodes. The text is illustrated with more than 150 full-colour images and photographs"--

Book Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus and Lung Cancer

Download or read book Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus and Lung Cancer written by Hung Y. Fan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) is a contagious lung cancer of sheep, first reported in South Africa in 1832 as "jaagsiekte" (chasing sickness). Starting in the 1970s evidence began to accumulate that the etiologic agent of OPA is a retrovirus, culminating in the deduction of the sequence of a novel retrovirus associated with the disease, jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV). Very recently, substantial progress has been made in JSRV research, including isolation of infectious and oncogenic molecular clones of JSRV, identification and cloning of the JSRV receptor, and demonstration that the envelope gene of JSRV functions as an oncogene. This book is a consensus volume that comprehensively reviews all aspects of JSRV research, including natural history of the disease, histopathology of OPA, molecular biology of JSRV, oncogenic transformation by JSRV, and comparison with human lung cancer.

Book Diagnosis and Control of Johne s Disease

Download or read book Diagnosis and Control of Johne s Disease written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-08-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johne's Disease is a chronic, progressive intestinal disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) that affects primarily ruminant animals. In recent decades there has been growing concern over the lack of effective control of this disease and questions have arisen regarding the possibility that Map infection could be a cause of some cases of Crohn's disease in humans. This report presents a broad outline of the steps that should be taken to control Johne's disease, reduce the spread of Map, and minimize effects of the disease in animals. The report also describes the weaknesses of our current research agenda and provides recommendations for a new research strategy to resolve the question of whether there is a link between Johne's and Crohn's diseases.
