Book excerpt: Adhesives have been used for thousands of years, but until 100 years ago, the vast majority was from natural products such as bones, skins, fish, milk, and plants. Since about 1900, adhesives based on synthetic polymers have been introduced, and today, there are many industrial uses of adhesives and sealants. It is difficult to imagine a product—in the home, in industry, in transportation, or anywhere else for that matter—that does not use adhesives or sealants in some manner. The Handbook of Adhesion Technology is intended to be the definitive reference in the field of adhesion. Essential information is provided for all those concerned with the adhesion phenomenon. Adhesion is a phenomenon of interest in diverse scientific disciplines and of importance in a wide range of technologies. Therefore, this handbook includes the background science (physics, chemistry and materials science), engineering aspects of adhesion and industry specific applications. It is arranged in a user-friendly format with ten main sections: theory of adhesion, surface treatments, adhesive and sealant materials, testing of adhesive properties, joint design, durability, manufacture, quality control, applications and emerging areas. Each section contains about five chapters written by internationally renowned authors who are authorities in their fields. This book is intended to be a reference for people needing a quick, but authoritative, description of topics in the field of adhesion and the practical use of adhesives and sealants. Scientists and engineers of many different backgrounds who need to have an understanding of various aspects of adhesion technology will find it highly valuable. Book Interface Oral Health Science 2009

Download or read book Interface Oral Health Science 2009 written by Takashi Sasano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2002, the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry has proposed “Interface Oral Health Science” as a major theme for next-generation dental research. That theme is based on the following new concept: healthy oral fu- tion is maintained by biological and biomechanical harmony among three s- tems: (1) oral tissues (host); (2) parasitic microorganisms of the oral cavity (parasites); and (3) biomaterials. The concept implies that oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and temporomandibular disorders should be interpreted as “interface disorders” that result from disruption of the intact int- face among these systems. The uniqueness of this concept rests on the fact that it not only encompasses the field of dentistry and dental medicine, but also expands the common ground shared with other fields, including medicine, ag- culture, material science, engineering, and pharmacology. We aim to promote advances in dental research and to activate collaboration with related fields by putting interface oral health science into practice. On this basis, we have already organized the 1st and 2nd International Symposiums for Interface Oral Health Science, which included inspiring special lectures, symposiums, poster pres- tations, and other discussions. The contents of the two symposiums were p- lished as monographs entitled Interface Oral Health Science in 2005 and 2007. The 3rd International Symposium was held in January 2009 as part of this project.

Book EFFECTIVENESS OF UNIVERSAL ADHESIVE BONDING AGENTS ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH TO LITHIUM DISILICATE CERAMICS

Download or read book EFFECTIVENESS OF UNIVERSAL ADHESIVE BONDING AGENTS ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH TO LITHIUM DISILICATE CERAMICS written by Mohammed AlRabiah and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: All-ceramic restorations have excellent esthetic outcomes compared with other restorative materials. Lithium disilicate is classified as one of many silica-based all-ceramic materials. Currently, companies have provided single-step adhesives, known as universal adhesives, compatible with different restorative materials including lithium disilicate. Many studies have reported greater bond strengths when using a silane to treat the lithium disilicate before applying the bonding agent. Moreover, few studies were published comparing the bond strength when using the universal adhesive alone. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare shear bond strength of three universal adhesives to lithium disilicate ceramic restorative material. Materials and Methods: Three universal adhesive bonding agents were selected from commercially available adhesives. 408 IPS e.max CAD ceramic discs were processed, fired, and etched for 20s. The specimens were divided into six groups. The first three groups used the universal adhesive directly. The remaining three groups were treated with silane. Then, a composite resin cylinder was placed on top of the adhesive using a bonding jig. Each group was subdivided into four equal subgroups (n = 17), subjected to different aging simulation procedures: 24 h, one month with 5000 thermocycles, two months with 5000 cycles, and three months with 5000 cycles. Then, specimens were debonded using shear force by a universal testing machine (MTS). Results: Shear bond strength was greater with silane than without silane (p

Book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets

Download or read book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets written by Amit Goyal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-etching primers are the latest addition to the armamentarium of an orthodontist. Their main advantage is that they reduce the number of steps required in the bonding of orthodontic brackets. However, their low ph was a cause of concern. This book describes a study undertaken to see the effects of ph of self-etchant on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. These shear bond strengths were also compared to those obtained with a conventional 3-step bonding system. It was found that self-etching primers not only reduce the chair time in an orthodontist's clinic but also reduce the amount of enamel lost during etching. The bond strength achieved was less than that of the conventional bonding system but was acceptable for orthodontic purposes. Thus self-etching primers are an important and useful invention for simplifying the most critical step in orthodontic clinic- bonding.
