Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of orthodontic materials in the past 5 decades has been a unique progress curve characterized by periods of intense activity with many developments followed by long quiescent intervals. An example of the delay in adopting the advances in dentistry might well be illustrated by the acid-etching technique, which was introduced in the mid 1950s1 and became universally accepted in the 1960s. It took more than a decade for this practice to become standard procedure in orthodontics on a large scale. Infact, orthodontic bonding has advanced more in last 10 years than previous 25. In the past decade, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in bonding to enamel with various materials techniques and auxiliaries involving glass ionomer bonding, self-etching primers, and new, powerful light-curing sources, along with self-ligating brackets and a different treatment concept, the Invisalign technique.

Book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets

Download or read book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets written by Amit Goyal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-etching primers are the latest addition to the armamentarium of an orthodontist. Their main advantage is that they reduce the number of steps required in the bonding of orthodontic brackets. However, their low ph was a cause of concern. This book describes a study undertaken to see the effects of ph of self-etchant on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. These shear bond strengths were also compared to those obtained with a conventional 3-step bonding system. It was found that self-etching primers not only reduce the chair time in an orthodontist's clinic but also reduce the amount of enamel lost during etching. The bond strength achieved was less than that of the conventional bonding system but was acceptable for orthodontic purposes. Thus self-etching primers are an important and useful invention for simplifying the most critical step in orthodontic clinic- bonding.

Download or read book Shear Bond Strengths of Two New Self etching Primers written by Andy CS. Ho and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic attachments using 2 self-etching primers (SEP): iBOND and G-Bond. Methods: 180 molars were randomly divided into 12 groups. Teeth were bonded with a stainless steel button using Transbond XT composite. The bonding agents were iBOND, G-Bond, Transbond Plus SEP and Transbond XT primer (control). SBS's immediately, 24hours and 3months were measured with their Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). Results: Transbond XT primer (11.22MPa) had a significantly higher immediate SBS than Transbond Plus SEP (5.32MPa), iBOND (6.69MPa) and G-Bond (8.30MPa). 24 hours, Transbond XT primer (16.65MPa) and Transbond Plus SEP (13.20MPa) had a significant increase in their SBS. No difference was observed at 3 months. ARI were significantly different between the groups at all time points. Conclusions: iBOND and G-Bond yielded sufficient SBS's over the three time points that may be sufficient to withstand occlusal and light archwire forces.

Results: The SPBS of the control group was higher than all other groups. No significant difference was found between all other groups. Pro Seal group had lowest SPBS. Adding Assure did not significantly increase SPBS. Conclusion: The bond strength of the groups with L.E.D. Pro Seal were significantly lower than the control, they were within the clinical range. The addition of Assure did increase SPBS, but not significantly, and may be an unnecessary step.

Book Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Brackets Using 3 Etching Techniques

Download or read book Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Brackets Using 3 Etching Techniques written by Shilpa Jamenis and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the shear bond strengths between the orthodontic bracket and acid etched enamel, enamel treated with self-etch primer and laser irradiated enamel and to analyze the interface of the enamel bracket bond.It will help students, teachers and othodontia practitioners as it deals with the most contemporarily used bonding techniques. The results indicate that the shear bond strength of all the three groups was clinically acceptable with no significant difference between them but more adhesive was left on enamel treated with acid and laser as compared to self-etch primer treated enamel.

Book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength Using Self etching Primer with Or Without Pumice Or Acid Etch Pretreatment

Download or read book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength Using Self etching Primer with Or Without Pumice Or Acid Etch Pretreatment written by Ana Paula DeCastro and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel in four bonding protocols: SEP without prior pumicing (None), Pre-etch and SEP without prior pumicing (Pre-etch), control: SEP with prior pumicing (Pumice), and Pre-etch and SEP with prior pumicing (Both). 80 extracted bovine incisors were randomly divided into 4 groups of 20, and brackets were bonded under the different experimental conditions. Debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine. A two-way ANOVA comparing the four groups indicated that there was a significant difference in debonding force (P = 0.001). The SEP without prior pumicing group (17.69 " 7.18 MPa) was statistically different from the SEP group with prior pumicing (25.82 " 6.84 MPa). There was no statistical difference found among the other groups. Differences in the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) were analyzed by chi-square. ARI scores differed significantly (P =0.0048).

Book Comparison of Two Self Etch Primers and a Fluoride Sealant on Shear Bond Strength of Precoated Brackets

Download or read book Comparison of Two Self Etch Primers and a Fluoride Sealant on Shear Bond Strength of Precoated Brackets written by Debby Wong and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: In an attempt to save chair time during bonding, self-etching primers are used along with metal brackets that are precoated with adhesive material. Fluoride releasing sealants has also been used commonly to prevent decalcification during orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of APC precoated brackets bonded with two different self-etching primers: Transbond Plus self-etch primer (TPSEP) and Reliance self-etch primer. This study also evaluated the effect of combining TPSEP or the Reliance SEP with LED Pro Seal, a fluoride releasing sealant for the enamel surface. Each of the self-etching primers (SEPs) and the combination of SEP combined LED Pro Seal were evaluated for shear bond strength after 24 hours of storage and thermocycling with 1 week of storage, in order to simulate some of the temperature changes in the oral cavity.^Materials and Methods: One hundred and twelve teeth were randomly divided into eight groups as follows: Group 1: Transbond Plus self-etch primer (TPSEP), Group 2: Reliance self-etch primer (Reliance), Group 3: TPSEP and LED Pro Seal, Group 4: Reliance and LED Pro Seal, Group 5: TPSEP with thermocycling, Group 6: Reliance with thermocycling, Group 7: TPSEP and LED Pro Seal with thermocycling, Group 8: Reliance and LED Pro Seal with thermocycling. An occlusogingival load was applied to the brackets producing a shear force at the bracket-tooth interface utilizing a Universal Testing Machine. Results: Significant differences in shear bond strengths among the groups containing the TPSEP or Reliance SEP, were detected by two-way ANOVA (p = 0.018). The results of the Newman-Keul's test that compared the test groups at 24 hours show that the shear bond strength of Reliance SEP (3.98 MPa " 1.30) was not statistically different from TPSEP (4.25 MPa " 1.16).^When each of the SEP is combined with the Pro Seal, a statistical difference in shear bond strength is detected between TPSEP (6.01 MPa " 3.05) and Reliance SEP (3.76 MPa " 1.52). Reliance SEP used alone vs. Reliance SEP combined with Pro Seal did not show any statistical difference in shear bond strength. However, when TPSEP was compared to TPSEP combined with Pro Seal, it showed a statistical difference in shear bond strength. Nonetheless, a two-way ANOVA did not detect any statistically significant interaction between the SEPs and the Pro Seal (p = 0.058). None of the groups showed statistically significant differences in shear bond strength when compared at the one week group. Conclusion: The newly introduced Reliance SEP provides similar shear bond strengths to Transbond Plus SEP. Reliance SEP with LED Pro Seal and Transbond Plus SEP with LED Pro Seal both provide adequate shear bond strengths.^Both SEPs used alone or with LED Pro Seal maintained its bond strength after thermocycling. LED Pro Seal is demonstrated to have good bond strength to enamel and can withstand the oral environment.

Book Bonding Orthodontic Brackets to Stainless Steel Crowns

Download or read book Bonding Orthodontic Brackets to Stainless Steel Crowns written by Daniel A. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare shear bond strengths of brackets bonded to stainless steel crowns using various orthodontic adhesives and surface conditioning techniques. One hundred and twenty mandibular first molar stainless steel crowns were randomly divided into groups: (1): Aluminablasting + Metal Primer + Assure; (2): Aluminablasting + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond; (3): Diamond Bur Abrasion + Metal Primer + Assure; (4): Diamond Bur Abrasion + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond; (5: control): Acid Etching + Metal Primer + Assure; (6: control): Acid Etching + Silane Coupling Agent + Transbond. Bond strength was tested using a universal testing machine. Both aluminablasting and diamond bur abrasion surface preparation techniques, when used in conjunction with metal primer and Assure bonding resin, reached clinically acceptable bond strength values (9.05 and 9.30 MPa, respectively). These techniques seem to offer viable options to bond orthodontic brackets to stainless steel crowns.
