Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first in a series of reports on the seismic performance of lightweight concrete bridge substructure elements. Through a discussion of experimental studies on two test units and analytical investigations, the shear capacity of lightweight concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic loading is presented. Also presented in this report is a revised model for quantifying the contribution of transverse steel to shear strength that is applicable to both lightweight and normal weight concrete. An alternative method for the evaluation of shear deformation for design and assessment purposes is presented which is also applicable to lightweight and normal weight concrete members.

Download or read book Seismic Design and Performance of Concrete Multi column Bents for Bridges written by Sri Sritharan and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the seismic design and performance of two concrete multi-column bents. The first unit contained a precast fully prestressed cap beam while the second unit was designed with a reinforcement concrete cap beam. A mix of conventional and headed reinforcement and mechanical couplers were used in detailing the cap beam of the second unit. Tests were performed with the objective of examining the most efficient cap beam/column details, which were established in previous joint tests, under the maximum feasible shear demand. Tests results showed that both units produced a satisfactory response when subjected to simulated seismic loading.
Download or read book Shake Table Testing of Lightweight Concrete Bridges written by Mervyn Kowalsky and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightweight concrete has been used frequently in the past for building structures, however, its limited use in bridges as well as questionable past earthquake performance have pointed towards the need to investigate the dynamic behavior. The research presented here represents the third phase of the lightweight concrete testing program at the University of California, San Diego, where the dynamic behavior of the material is considered. The results of the first two phases of testing indicated that lightweight concrete performs well with little decrease in shear and flexural strength under cyclic loading. The testing described here encompasses two test units subjected to earthquake time histories on the Shake Table. The objective of testing is to further verify the results of the first two phases of cyclic testing where shear and flexural response were considered, as well as to investigate the overall dynamic behavior. Results are presented in the form of a qualitative assessment of dynamic response as well as further verification of the recommendations presented during the first two stages of testing. Additionally, a steel jacket repair of the prestressed unit allowed investigation of the dynamic behavior of lightweight concrete after a damaging event and subsequent repair.

Download or read book Seismic Response of Column cap Beam Tee Connections with Cap Beam Prestressing written by Sri Sritharan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete bridge joints in California were detailed with no shear reinforcement in the 1950s. The probable consequence of such poor detailing was demonstrated on an as-built tee (interior) joint from the Santa Monica Viaduct in Los Angeles. When a redesign of this joint was considered with the conventional design methods based upon the maximum joint shear forces, it resulted in a considerable amount of joint reinforcement, causing congestion of steel within the joint. This has been identified as a major construction problem in concrete bridge construction. Three redesigns of the prototye joint were sought with the objective of reducing the amount of reinforcing steel within the joint, thereby ensuring constructability. In all three designs, force transfer models were employed in determining the appropriate amount of joint reinforcement rather than using the joint shear forces as the design parameter. When the cap beam was designed with full prestressing, it was also shown that precast construction can be adopted as an alternative to cast-in-place construction for building multi-column concrete bents. The details of the joint design, seismic performance of all three redesigned units and some design recommendations are presented in this report.

This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete columns play a very important role in structural performance. As such, it is essential to apply a suitable analytical tool to estimate their structural behaviour considering all failure mechanisms such as axial, shear, and flexural failures. This book highlights the development of a fiber beam-column element accounting for shear effects and the effect of tension stiffening through reinforcement-to-concrete bond, along with the employment of suitable constitutive material laws.
