Book F I R E a S H E S I R O N C L a Y

Download or read book F I R E a S H E S I R O N C L a Y written by Celia-Joy Martins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the year of the Lord 1685. With only the clothes they were dressed in, their Bibles hidden in loaves of hollowed bread, they fled before the French Catholic authorities. Die or be Catholic! were shouted by the heartless dragonnades with emphasis on the die. And when the second word followed, the Protestant Huguenot victims were already struckdying, brutally slaughtered in the name of Catholic Christianity! This terror swept through Paris, continued through the rest of France, after King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes proclaimed by his grandfather, King Henry the Great of France. This bloody highway in the name of Christianity took thousands of Huguenots lives and hundreds of thousands fled their country of birth to find refuge in America, other parts of Europe, and also South Africa. In South Africa, they started anew, with their God (of Israel) and their Bibles, and the home and the freedom to serve their God they so longed for and found would become a nightmare again. With their blood, they paid for freedom, twice; and today they are still dying, slaughtered by the criminal elements that rule in South Africa, unfortunately, in the entire Africa.

When Gabriel Mann, the ex-husband who kicked her to the curb, begs for help, Eja laughs in his face. Gabriel is involved in a nasty literary spat with a competitor for tenure, and charges of sexism may derail Gabriel's career. Expect murder, misdirection and a pinch of glamour as that dazzling duo, Eja and Deming, explore complex motives, political correctness, and academic angst in the rarified air of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This time, Eja's campaign for justice just might be the death of her. Experience in offices around the nation allowed her to observe both human and corporate foibles and rejoice in unintentional humor. Those locations and the characters she encountered are celebrated in a series of mysteries including Intrusion (2011) and Die Laughing (2012) both from Mainly Murder Press; The Abacus Prize (available now on Amazon); and the Boston Uncommons Mystery Series (Swann Dive; Mantrap; Gilt Trip, and Swann Songs,) now available from Bell Bridge Books. Book Export Controls

Download or read book Export Controls written by Belva M. Martin and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. gov¿t. annually controls billions of dollars worth of U.S. arms and dual-use items exported to its allies and partners through a system of laws, reg¿s., and processes. Weaknesses in this system led the auditor to include export controls as part of a high-risk area and called for a reexamination, including evaluating alternative approaches. Increasing international collaboration on defense programs also makes it important to understand how other countries control exports. Proposed treaties would change the process for the export or transfer of certain U.S. arms to the U.K. and Australia. This report: (1) identifies how selected allies' systems differ from the U.S. system; and (2) assesses how the proposed treaties will change controls on arms exports. Illus.

Book excerpt: “The Amazing Race" meets Around the World in 80 Days as a woman desperate to save her family bookstore falls for her competition. Born and raised in New York City, Ramona Keene dreams of attending photography school and traveling to Paris, but her reality never quite catches up with her imagination. Instead, she works at her uncles' quaint bookstore, where the tea is plentiful and all the adventures are between the covers of secondhand books. But when the new landlord arrives with his Evil Nephew in tow, Romy's quiet life comes crashing down. He plans to triple the rent, something her uncles can't afford. In order to earn the money to help save the bookstore, Romy applies for a job at ExLibris Expeditions, a company that re-creates literary journeys. Romy snags the oddest internship ever: retrace Phileas Fogg's journey from Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days and plan a suitable, contemporary adventure for a client. The task is close to impossible; sticking to the original route means no commercial aircraft permitted, and she’s got a lot less than eighty days to work with. Shaking off her fear of leaving home, Romy takes on the challenge, only to discover she’s got competition. Worse, Dominic Madison turns out to be the – unfortunately hot – nephew of her family’s worst enemy. Can Romy win the race and circle the globe in time to save the bookstore? And what happens when she starts to fall for the very person who may just be the death of her dreams?

Book Under the Medical Gaze

Download or read book Under the Medical Gaze written by Susan Greenhalgh and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-05-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling account of the author's experience with a chronic pain disorder and subsequent interaction with the American health care system goes to the heart of the workings of power and culture in the biomedical domain. It is a medical whodunit full of mysterious misdiagnosis, subtle power plays, and shrewd detective work. Setting a new standard for the practice of autoethnography, Susan Greenhalgh presents a case study of her intense encounter with an enthusiastic young specialist who, through creative interpretation of the diagnostic criteria for a newly emerging chronic disease, became convinced she had a painful, essentially untreatable, lifelong muscle condition called fibromyalgia. Greenhalgh traces the ruinous effects of this diagnosis on her inner world, bodily health, and overall well-being. Under the Medical Gaze serves as a powerful illustration of medicine's power to create and inflict suffering, to define disease and the self, and to manage relationships and lives. Greenhalgh ultimately learns that she had been misdiagnosed and begins the long process of undoing the physical and emotional damage brought about by her nearly catastrophic treatment. In considering how things could go so awry, she embarks on a cogent and powerful analysis of the sociopolitical sources of pain through feminist, cultural, and political understandings of the nature of medical discourse and practice in the United States. She develops fresh arguments about the power of medicine to medicalize our selves and lives, the seductions of medical science, and the deep, psychologically rooted difficulties women patients face in interactions with male physicians. In the end, Under the Medical Gaze goes beyond the critique of biomedicine to probe the social roots of chronic pain and therapeutic alternatives that rely on neither the body-cure of conventional medicine nor the mind-cure of some alternative medicines, but rather a broader set of strategies that address the sociopolitical sources of pain.
