Book excerpt: Most women are raised in a context of feminine values, whether they are aware of those values or not. Some of the values specific to this feminine culture are interdependence, caring, and relationality. In our time, many women cross over into a masculine value culture when they take on what were traditional male roles in male-evolved institutions. Eventually, women become aware that their own values conflict with some assumed male values. They then have to compromise and adjust in order to be productive in those environments. The women I have focused on in this study have, because of a significant external event or events and an emerging inner vision, left both structures. They then, however, lack others around them whose values structures can reinforce adherence. When these women are by themselves, they experience something like a dark night of the soul. Once they get beyond the pain and a sense of meaninglessness, they begin to realize that they can move the constructs of reality, that they can write history as well as read it. An essential concern is to deter¬mine what their values are. After this process, their own personal vision becomes clear. But the cycle isn't complete until they bring that new vision back to their people. And bringing it back in a holistic sense helps to raise the moral sights of others who are influenced by that experience.

Quaint little Abbots Newton, the town that time forgot, turns out to have been home to a notorious murderess from back in the 60s. In fact, the murderess lived in Anna’s new house. Almost immediately, the small town homicide team springs into action led by Chris, a black detective. The murder rekindles a previous case—the mysterious death of an abused woman, Sarah Crosby. Sarah’s parents emerge as suspects, the mother willing to do anything to keep a past concealed and a father well trained in the art of shooting. Tom Ellis, an avid duck hunter also comes under suspicion as well as two young farm workers. Entering the picture is a devious reporter, risking her reputation to break the story. Set against a backdrop of marshes, orchards, and small rural towns in California’s San Joaquin Valley amid drought conditions, the struggle for survival exposes unrefined passions and a cast of characters evading an inevitable conflict, all acting as decoys to the two murders. Book excerpt: Honor Thy Father continues the story of a deeply religious man, his son, and seven daughters. In the beginning, Josef Kusak dedicates his firstborn to the Lord; other sons will follow to love the land as he does. But as the years go by and daughters arrive to fill his house, he is torn between honoring his promise to God and holding on to the son who would inherit the land and carry on the Kusak name. The conflict comes to a head in his eightieth year when his son becomes impatient for the land he was promised. After a lifetime of building a family legacy, Josef Kusak faces betrayal from the son who was to inherit not only the land but also a spiritual legacy of faith. In an effort to make things right with God and give his son the freedom to choose his own path, he turns to his daughters. The middle daughter returns to the land as a peacemaker and finds herself embroiled in a battle that is bigger than the land takeover her brother has in mind. The battle takes her to New York, Toronto, and Vancouver in search of the lost genes of the blue iris. Instead of locating mink, Corrine Jorrell finds a Canadian troubadour and more adventure than the novels she aspires to write. She begins a game that will bring her father peace of mind and change her brother's heart. The game that will bring Jean-Pierre Robillard to Oregon is filled with false impressions and ironic humor as a small-town teacher pits herself against a man of the world. As the game continues, a parable comes to life, a story that will change Andrew Kusak into the man he was meant to be, a man who honors his father and his God.
