Joe selected the title for this book based upon an event that occurred when Maddy was a student in high school. The teacher asked what Maddy wanted to do in life. Maddy said she was going to fly airplanes! Her teacher laughed, "Then you'd better eat your spinach!" Book Good bye to the Mermaids

Download or read book Good bye to the Mermaids written by Karin Finell and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good-bye to the Mermaids conveys the horrors of war as seen through the innocent eyes of a child. It is the story of World War II as it affected three generations of middle-class German women: Karin, six years old when the war began, who was taken in by Hitler's lies; her mother, Astrid, a rebellious artist who occasionally spoke out against the Nazis; and her grandmother Oma, a generous and strong-willed woman who, having spent her own childhood in America, brought a different perspective to the events of the time. It tells of a convoluted world where children were torn between fear and hope, between total incomprehension of events and the need to simply deal with reality. In one of the relatively few recollections of the war from a German woman's perspective, Finell relates what was for her a normal part of growing up: participating in activities of the Hitler Youth, observing Nazi customs at Christmas, and once being close enough to the Führer at a rally to make eye contact with him. She tells of how she first became aware of the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear, and of being asked to identify corpses from a bombed apartment house. She also depicts the lives of people tainted by Hitler's influence: her half-Jewish relatives who gave in to the strain of trying to remain unnoticed; a favorite aunt who was gassed because she was old and had broken her hip; and a friend of the family who was involved in the abortive putsch against Hitler and hanged as a traitor. When American and British forces intensified air raids on Berlin in 1943, Finell observed the stoical valor of women during the bombings, firestorms, and mass evacuations. Not yet a teenager, she witnessed the battle for Berlin and the mass rapes perpetrated by conquering Russian and Mongolian troops. Order was restored after the American and British troops arrived. The Marshall Plan jump-started an economic recovery for West Germany, provoking the Russians to blockade Berlin. From 1948 to 1949 the Americans and British kept Berlin's residents alive with the airlift. But even though food was flown in, the people of Berlin continued to go hungry. Deprivation forced Berliners to look inward and face their collective guilt as they withstood the threat of Soviet occupation during these postwar years. This eloquent and touching story tells how a decent people were perverted by Hitler and how a young girl ultimately came to recognize the father figure Hitler for the monster he was. From a time of innocence, Karin Finell takes readers along a nightmarish journey in which fantasies are clung to, set aside, and at last set free. Good-bye to the Mermaids presents us with the revelation that human beings can survive such times with their souls intact.

Book Frenchy

Download or read book Frenchy written by Tracy L. Shaler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. Jeannette Marx lived in Cologne and was just twelve years old at the time. Still, she recalls being terribly frightened by the news. Her uncle, Benjamin Marx, a prominent Social Democrat in the Reichstag, knew Hitler posed a grave threat to German Jews. Before fleeing to London, Benjamin pleaded with Jeannette's father to leave Germany right away. Salomon refused. Like many other Germans at the time, he believed Hitler was "crazy" and would certainly not last. Nazi book burnings, physical attacks, and Kristallnacht, young Jeannette witnessed these traumatic events right where she lived. Forced to leave her family behind, this Jewish teenager barely escaped Germany on the Kindertransport. Not long after she arrived in London, she decided it was time to "get back at Hitler." Jeannette joined the World War II effort and signed on with the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service. When she was asked to choose an area to work in, she asked to be sent to the East End of the docks, where it was the worst. There, she would perform heroic acts of courage and valor as bombs fell all around. The sweet victory and celebration of Hitler's defeat would prove to be short-lived as Jeannette discovers the shocking truth about his Final solution. Had her parents and the rest of her family somehow escaped? Jeannette's own words, personal letters, and photographs, plus rare journal entries, illuminate and personalize this most difficult time in history.

Book Eating Dangerously

Download or read book Eating Dangerously written by Michael Booth and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are afraid of their food. And for good reason. In 2011, the deadliest food-borne illness outbreak in a century delivered killer listeria bacteria on innocuous cantaloupe never before suspected of carrying that pathogen. Nearly 50 million Americans will get food poisoning this year. Spoiled, doctored or infected food will send more than 100,000 people to the hospital. Three thousand will die. We expect, even assume, our government will protect our food, but how often do you think a major U.S. food farm get inspected by federal or state officials? Once a year? Every harvest? Twice a decade? Try never. Eating Dangerously sheds light on the growing problem and introduces readers to the very real, very immediate dangers inherent in our food system. This two-part guide to our food system's problems and how consumers can help protect themselves is written by two seasoned journalists, who helped break the story of the 2011 listeria outbreak that killed 33 people. Michael Booth and Jennifer Brown, award-winning health and investigative journalists and parents themselves, answer pressing consumer questions about what's in the food supply, what "authorities" are and are not doing to clean it up, and how they can best feed their families without making food their full-time jobs. Both deeply informed and highly readable, Eating Dangerously explains to the American consumer how their food system works—and more importantly how it doesn’t work. It also dishes up course after course of useful, friendly advice gleaned from the cutting-edge laboratories, kitchens and courtrooms where the national food system is taking new shape. Anyone interested in knowing more about how their food makes it from field and farm to store and table will want the inside scoop on just how safe or unsafe that food may be. They will find answers and insight in these pages.

Book Making Supper Safe

Download or read book Making Supper Safe written by Ben Hewitt and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food recalls have become so ubiquitous we hardly even notice them. The massive peanut salmonella contamination of 2008–2009 alone killed nine and sickened an estimated 22,500 people; only a few weeks later, contaminated frozen cookie dough sent 35 people to the hospital. These tragic, inexcusable events to which no one is immune are but a symptom of a broader food system malaise. In Making Supper Safe, Ben Hewitt exposes the vulnerabilities inherent to the US food industry, where the majority of our processing facilities are inspected only once every seven years, and where government agencies lack the necessary resources to act on early warning signs. The most dangerous aspect of our food system isn't just its potential to make us acutely ill, but the ever expanding distance between us and our sources of nourishment. Hewitt introduces a vibrant cast of characters and revolutionaries who are reinventing how we grow, process, package, distribute, and protect our food, and even how we protect ourselves. He takes readers inside a food contamination trace-back investigation, goes dumpster diving, and talks to lawyers, policy makers, and families who have been affected by contaminated food. Making Supper Safe explains why we should worry, but it is also a quest to understand how we can learn to trust our food again.
