Book The Gunks Shawangunk Mountains Ridge and Valley Towns Through Time

Download or read book The Gunks Shawangunk Mountains Ridge and Valley Towns Through Time written by Ronald G. Knapp and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Shawangunk Mountains -- The Gunks -- are renowned for stunning landscapes on and off the ridge in a region that has remained a favorite destination for visitors since the middle of the nineteenth century. While the mountain elevations are not high -- nowhere exceeding 2,240 feet -- they present rugged topography with glistening grey-white escarpments, jumbled boulders at the base of cliffs, deep crevices, as well as precipitation-fed "sky lakes." Arnold Guyot, the first Professor of Geology and Geography at Princeton University, remarked in 1887 that "Few spots on our continent unite so much beauty of scenery, both grand and lovely, within so small a compass, to be enjoyed with so much ease," a sentiment echoed by many today. Framing the Gunks are the valleys of the Rondout Creek and the Wallkill River where one finds New Paltz, which lays claim to being "one of the oldest towns in America" because of the stone houses aligned along Huguenot Street, as well as quaint hamlets like Gardiner, Rosendale, Accord, High Falls, and Marbletown. For the most part, these are lively, even cosmopolitan places, a mixture of old families and newcomers, many of whom arrived as second-homers from new York City."--Back cover.

Book Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve

Download or read book Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve written by Robi Josephson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohonk is a name of Native American origin first given to a lake high in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County. Mohonk Lake was sculpted eons ago by the crushing weight of advancing glaciers. Nature's handiwork resulted in a crystal blue lake rimmed by stately hemlock trees and sheer conglomerate cliffs. Mohonk Mountain House was established at the lake in 1869 by Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley. They and younger half-brother, Daniel Smiley, created a mountaintop haven for their guests-a 251-room hotel set on acres of woodlands and gardens. Today Daniel Smiley's descendants welcome visitors to the last of the grand Victorian hotels in the Shawangunk and Catskill Mountain region. The Mohonk Preserve was carved from lands of the Mountain House beginning in 1963 and bears witness to the vision of the Smiley family. Its mission is to protect over 6,400 acres of semi-wilderness through its education, research, and land stewardship programs. Today, it is the largest nature preserve supported by members and visitors in New York State.

Book Saving the Shawangunks

Download or read book Saving the Shawangunks written by Carleton Mabee and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The successful grassroots fight to stop the construction of a 400-room hotel/conference center and 500 condominiums around Lake Minnewaska in New York State s Shawangunk Mountains in the 1980s was a landmark victory for Hudson Valley environmentalists and became a blueprint for subsequent struggles to preserve open space against encroaching development in a uniquely beautiful landscape that The Nature Conservancy in 1991 selected as one of the 75 Last Great Places on Earth. But the fight did not end there. Subsequent plans for Lake Minnewaska involved the construction of a large spa complex. That plan, too, was defeated when local citizens once again banded together in opposition, and further development schemes for Lake Minnewaska were thwarted when New York State purchased the property and created the Minnewaska State Park Preserve. A previous proposal to place 500 trailers around the Shawangunk Ridge's Tillson Lake was also opposed and defeated, and then, in 2002, a plan to build 350 luxury homes on land located between Sam's Point Preserve and the new Minnewaska State Park Preserve proved that the fight to preserve the Shawangunk Ridge from development would be an ongoing struggle. As the result of continued and focused community action, the northern Shawangunk Mountains today, with their sky lakes, rock cliffs, and unique ecology, include vast stretches of preserved and wild land for public enjoyment and the benefit of future generations. In this, his final book, Pulitzer Prize-winner Carleton Mabee documents how common citizens can stop corporations in their tracks and preserve their communities and the landscape they love. Featuring 32 full-color photos by acclaimed photographer Nora Scarlett."--Amazon.com.

Book Running the Long Path

Download or read book Running the Long Path written by Kenneth A. Posner and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ultrarunner’s fast-paced narrative into the wilds of New York’s Hudson Valley, as he attempts to set a new record for completing the Long Path, a 350-mile hiking trail that links New York City and Albany. Have you ever considered running 350 miles in nine days? Kenneth A. Posner did just that when he completed a record-setting run along New York’s Long Path, a 350-mile hiking trail that stretches from New York City to Albany. Running the Long Path’s page-turning narrative combines the thrill and challenges of Posner’s extreme endurance feat with the stunning natural beauty and deep historical significance of New York’s Hudson Valley. A one-time casual runner, Posner shares his excitement of developing into a trail-runner and eventually an ultrarunner, as well as the pursuit of a “fastest known time”—a new dimension of extreme trail running, where some of the sport’s fastest and most experienced athletes vie to set new speed records for important trails. Hikers, walkers, and runners will appreciate his detailed descriptions of planning, pacing, gear selection, nutrition, hydration, and navigation, which will help them prepare for their own adventures on the trails. Interspersed with the running adventure, Posner relates the interesting stories of the Long Path and the places it passes through, which include some of New York’s most important parks and preserves and the distinctive mountains and forests they protect. Throughout the book, he channels the voices of famous New Yorkers associated with the Long Path—Walt Whitman, John Burroughs, Theodore Roosevelt, and Raymond Torrey—who express their appreciation of the natural beauty of the region. Running the Long Path is the story of what ordinary people can accomplish with a little determination and a lot of grit. Whether you walk or run, you will find inspiration in Posner’s tale. An experienced ultrarunner, Kenneth A. Posner is the author of Stalking the Black Swan: Research and Decision Making in a World of Extreme Volatility. He lives in New York City and works as chief of strategic planning and investor relations at Capital Bank Financial Corp.

Book excerpt: Studio photographer Nora Scarlett hiked for over ten years throughout the ¿Gunks¿¿the Shawangunk Mountains of New York State. ¿I looked for wacky formations, humorous characteristics, improbable locations, surprising shapes, and other wondrous growths. Such specimens occur frequently at the intersection of rock and root in this geologically unique area, the Shawangunk Mountains, a ridge extending from New Jersey to the Catskills. I became awed at scene after scene displaying how life adapts to adversity and how it succeeds in astonishing ways. Tiny seedlings emerge from small cracks in rock, sprouting a handful of needles or tender leaves, knowing only to keep trying to grow. Enormous hemlocks hang off ledges, improbably rooted to something, looking as if they shouldn¿t be upright, and yet ¿ there they are.¿ The result is "Trunks of the Gunks," featuring 100 amazing photographs of nature in its most whimsical and most tenacious moods.

Book An Unforgiving Land

Download or read book An Unforgiving Land written by Robi Josephson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-illustrated history of a small, hardscrabble community in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York¿s Ulster County where today¿s Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve now lie. From early post-Revolutionary days through World War II, a few hardy families scratched out a living atop the mountain, defying an unforgiving and isolated terrain. For generations they lived off the land, working subsistence farms and harvesting raw materials from the forest and earth, having only each other to rely upon. Today only a few vestiges of this proud and independent community remain. The rest has vanished along with the way of life that sustained it, but in the pages of this book Robi Josephson and Bob Larsen breathe life into this lost world and the people who once called it home. This long-awaited work tells the remarkable story of the Trapps people and how the hamlet was honored with placement on the National and State Registers of Historic Places¿the first time New York State has recognized the historic importance of a vanished, hardscrabble community.
