Book The Socialism of Shaw

Download or read book The Socialism of Shaw written by Bernard Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international fame of Mr. Shaw seems to present no startling features to superficial view. For over thirty years he has been a prolific dramatist, whose output, despite its weak-to-middling hold upon the stage, has been abundant enough to keep him constantly before the eyes and minds of the play-goers of both hemispheres. He has been a novelist, and, concurrently, a pamphleteer in the cause of the most widely spread international movement on earth. The serious concepts of his plays and novels are always clothed-like those of Mark Twain-in the gayest and most striking of literary works.

This book was released on 2016-11-27 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw was a master of the satire, and he used his pen as a knife to cut through the bejeweled ribbons of a class structure that he found to be both unsustainable and at the pinnacle of it's success. In this work, he elucidates the concepts of socialism far better than any of the actual proponents of the philosophy did, and yet also showed the relative difficulties in ridding society of the evils of rampant capitalism.

Book Bernard Shaw on Politics

Download or read book Bernard Shaw on Politics written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of critical writings on politics from the Nobel Prize – winning playwright behind Saint Joan and Man and Superman. The Critical Shaw: On Politics is a comprehensive selection of renowned Irish playwright and Nobel Laureate Bernard Shaw’s opinions on a wide range of political movements, ideologies, and events that helped shape the international landscape of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With unwavering conviction, and in many cases openly courting controversy and calumny, Shaw spoke his mind on the big “-isms” of his time: Socialism, Capitalism, Communism, and Fascism. He championed Socialism in its formative years, he condemned all combatants in the First World War, he berated America’s embrace of Capitalism, he praised Russia’s choice of Communism, he lauded Stalin, he rejected the notion that Hitler was responsible for the Second World War, and he scorned Democracy. Persistently provocative, sometimes outrageous, always the political iconoclast, Shaw's political convictions—as soapbox orator or world-famous pundit—challenge us to face the political issues and dilemmas of our own time with similar rigor and integrity. The Critical Shaw series brings together, in five volumes and from a wide range of sources, selections from Bernard Shaw’s voluminous writings on topics that exercised him for the whole of his professional career: Literature, Music, Politics, Religion, and Theater. The volumes are edited by leading Shaw scholars, and all include an introduction, a chronology of Shaw’s life and works, annotated texts, and a bibliography. The series editor is L.W. Conolly, literary adviser to the Shaw Estate and former president of the International Shaw Society.

This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for the Fabian Society near the close of the 19th century, these essays aim to explain and clarify the principles of socialism and social democracy. At the time they were authored, socialism and the trade union movement were rapidly gaining pace in England and wider Europe. The uniting of workers as a political movement was a gradual process, with hostility from the owners of manufacture and the political establishment obstacles to those aiming for socialist policy to be enacted by government. The intellectual support for socialism was, by the 1890s, already pronounced in England - as such these essays were overseen and edited by George Bernard Shaw, who was a prominent playwright. Throughout his career, Shaw would lend his talents and reputation to promoting the socialist cause, which he felt was the only way to ensure economic justice and security for the vast majority of the world's population. Shaw prepared and revised these essays as lectures, which were to be delivered to audiences within London. At the time, the ideas of social democracy were in an early and developmental phase, albeit informed by the learned minds of those supporting the movement. Thus we receive explanations of trade unionism, the regulation of property and production, the establishment of worker's rights, and a harnessing of industry toward creating prosperity for all. Although the public at the time were sympathetic to democratic socialism, they were confused as to methods behind its implementation. One of the essayists, Annie Besant, keenly addresses the 'How?'. Other essays meanwhile are more general in tone, concerning policy; plans for the future; and the moral cause for socialism.
