Book excerpt: [I tell her] “golf is sacred. Holy. Sacrosanct.” I like that. Sacrosanct. So she tells me about this article she read, about the attitude of the average middle-aged guy toward the game of golf…Anyway, according to Darlene, the idea behind this stupid article is that at a certain age, men give up on sex and spend all their time and energy on golf instead. To which I asked, So what’s your point? That didn’t go down so well. (Jack in Act I) The landscape of middle-aged male bravado and angst that Eugene Stickland populates here with Calgary oilmen and their romantic difficulties has been visited before—by John Updike, Richard Ford, and other prose writers of the past generation. But rarely has it been visited in dramatic form with the combination of broad humor and gentle wit that Stickland brings to this new comedy. Midlife is being published in conjunction with its world premiere as part of Alberta Theatre Projects playRites Festival, February/March 2002.

  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9781880238318
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Quick Now Always written by Mark Irwin and published by BOA Editions, Ltd.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, his third book of poetry, Mark Irwin makes stunning jumps of imagination to create a poetry that is Rilkean in conception and execution, and that speaks to America at the end of the 20th century and to the issues of history, memory, language and consciousness. Irwin's vision is as broad as Whitman's and Hart Crane's, his language propelled by charged rhythms and a lush music. These poems address the American experience, from shopping at Woolworth's to traveling into the Grand Canyon, from the art of Robert Mapplethorpe to that of Andy Warhol, who "watched the working class work and it bored (him) to beauty". At the heart of the collection is the sweeping meditation, "Turbo-Descartes", that probes how our myths and machines effect our memories and desires.

This book is an account of two years spent getting to know Britain's most dazzling and enigmatic insects - the dragonflies and damselflies. The quest to find, photograph, watch and learn about dragons and damsels took the author on a tour of diverse and lovely wetlands up and down Britain, from the rugged wild peat bogs of north-west Scotland to the languid meanders of the Oxfordshire Thames. The account describes close encounters with the dragons and damsels themselves, set against backdrops of rich and vital habitats teeming with a range of other wildlife. It is also packed with background detail on dragonfly and damselfly natural history, and wetland ecology in general. The text is enlivened with line drawings and a section of colour photographs.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of the New York Times bestseller Choke and the cult classic Fight Club, a cunningly plotted novel about the ultimate verbal weapon, one that reinvents the apocalyptic thriller for our times. "A harrowing and hilarious glimpse into the future of civilization.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune Ever heard of a culling song? It’s a lullaby sung in Africa to give a painless death to the old or infirm. The lyrics of a culling song kill, whether spoken or even just thought. You can find one on page 27 of Poems and Rhymes from Around the World, an anthology that is sitting on the shelves of libraries across the country, waiting to be picked up by unsuspecting readers. Reporter Carl Streator discovers the song’s lethal nature while researching Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and before he knows it, he’s reciting the poem to anyone who bothers him. As the body count rises, Streator glimpses the potential catastrophe if someone truly malicious finds out about the song. The only answer is to find and destroy every copy of the book in the country. Accompanied by a shady real-estate agent, her Wiccan assistant, and the assistant’s truly annoying ecoterrorist boyfriend, Streator begins a desperate cross-country quest to put the culling song to rest.

As Thérèse discovers the dead body of Delores Valdez in a plush mansion throbbing with the beauty of precious family gems, the riveting mystery begins. By book's end, with the help of her grey Angora cats, Thérèse stumbles upon clues that lead her to a clever murderer. The 4 star review by reader from Southern,CA This elegantly written little book gave me many hours of reading pleasure. It has a finely crafted murder, a bunch of suspicious characters, lots of chocolates, and a cook who presents little treats in his creations. Lacking explicit violence and blush-inducing sex. The author provides descriptive passages on several interesting subjects, including Native- American customs, preparing meals, caring for flowers, and koi fish. I enjoyed the book and gleaned a lot of information on various subjects. A little jewel of a book which will hopefully be enjoyed by many. And don't forget to drink your coffee within 20 minutes of brewing it.
