Book Sharpening Everyday Mental thinking Skills Through Mathematics Problem Solving And Beyond

Download or read book Sharpening Everyday Mental thinking Skills Through Mathematics Problem Solving And Beyond written by Alfred S Posamentier and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is a subject taught from kindergarten through to high school, and yet it is the one subject that most adults are almost proud to admit to not having been very good at, and, therefore, tend to avoid it where they can. However, one of the key factors in mathematics is its ability to enable us to solve everyday problems. When we consider 'the worst-case scenario' of the situation, it is analogous to solving a mathematical problem by considering extremes. Or, we might consider the best path to take from point A to point B, where geometric relationships can be helpful. This book is intended to demonstrate a variety of neglected aspects of mathematics, in order to demonstrate the power and beauty of the field of mathematics beyond where most people, students, and teachers believe is possible. The chapters of the book explore a multitude of topics: unusual arithmetic calculations and shortcuts, entertaining and instructional problem-solving strategies, unusual applications of algebra, and how geometry allows us to better appreciate physical relationships. Only a basic mathematical knowledge is needed to understand these topics and problems; however, the book also demonstrates that, armed with even this level of understanding, our mathematical skills far exceed what we learned at school! The final chapter is the most challenging, and explores a curious problem-solving technique.

This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging Young Students in Mathematics through Competitions presents a wide range of topics relating to mathematics competitions and their meaning in the world of mathematical research, teaching and entertainment. Following the earlier two volumes, contributors explore a wide variety of fascinating problems of the type often presented at mathematics competitions. In this new third volume, many chapters are directly related to the challenges involved in organizing competitions under Covid-19, including many positive aspects resulting from the transition to online formats. There are also sections devoted to background information on connections between the mathematics of competitions and their organization, as well as the competitions' interplay with research, teaching and more. The various chapters are written by an international group of authors involved in problem development, many of whom were participants of the 9th Congress of the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions in Bulgaria in 2022. Together, they provide a deep sense of the issues involved in creating such problems for competition mathematics and recreational mathematics.

This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our physical world is embedded in a geometric environment. Plane geometry has many amazing wonders beyond those that are briefly touched on in school curriculums. The triangle, one of the basic instruments in geometry, has a plethora of unexpected curiosities. Geometric Gems presents one of the largest collections of triangle curiosities currently available, which the authors discuss in an easily understood fashion, requiring nothing more of readers other than the very basics of school geometry to appreciate these curiosities and their justifications or proofs. The book is intended to be widely appreciated by a general audience, and their love for geometry should be greatly enhanced through exploring these many unexpected relationships in geometry. Geometric Gems is also suitable for mathematics teachers, to enhance the education of their students with these highly motivating triangle properties.

Book Mathematical Problem Solving Workbook 3

Download or read book Mathematical Problem Solving Workbook 3 written by Satya Pradhan and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having strong problem-solving skills can make a huge difference in one's career in the modern knowledge-based economy. Problems are at the center of what we do at work every day. Whether one is developing a vaccine for the flu, creating an antivirus program for the Internet, delivering lifesaving drugs to remote villages, maximizing profits for a company, or understanding the complex structure of our universe, problems are an integral part of our everyday lives. Being an effective and confident problem solver is really important to one's success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good understanding of strategy and the tools to use when approaching a problem. Therefore, it is essential for students to develop the skills and techniques for problem solving at an early age, when they are in elementary school. Mathematical problem solving is often taught as a way to reinforce mathematical concepts, which misses the importance of strategic thinking while solving a problem. Many research articles and books have been written emphasizing the importance of problem-solving strategies. However, the burden of teaching problem-solving strategies is left mostly to teachers and parents, who are expected to develop their own curriculum and lesson plans for the complex topic of strategy and then teach it to students. This book presents different problem-solving strategies that can easily be used by teachers and parents to teach the subject. The first three chapters present the concepts of number operations, the basic problem-solving strategies, and the unitary method. This is followed by many different problems that students will encounter in their careers. These include lessons that present problems on numbers, age, time and distance, money, work and time, and mixtures. The focus of the book is to start with a problem statement, understand the problem, and then solve it with a known mathematical procedure. Detailed examples are presented in each lesson to show the step-by-step strategy to solve different types of real-life problems.

Book Brain Power Enrichment Level Two Book Two Teacher Version Grades 6 8

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain Power Enrichment Programs aim to develop problem-solving abilities in students who wish to improve their skills. Additionally, the program may provide challenging, stimulating and inspirational learning experiences through engagement with math and logic problem solving for gifted children. This book accompanies a Level Two student through his/her second semester of the problem solving program (or it may be used independently as a problem solving workbook). All Brain Power programs are based on a step-by-step approach, which enables students to understand problems of increasing complexity. Level Two continues to equip students typically in grades 6 to 8 with problem solving strategies and techniques, and supports the application of these skills to algebra and geometry. The implications for improving one's problem solving skills are numerous. These include a more positive attitude toward math and science, improved thinking flexibility and creativity in all subject areas, as well as increased success on academic, gifted, university admissions, and professional program tests (many of which are designed with an emphasis on assessing higher-order thinking skills). Moreover, knowledge of a range of problem solving strategies coupled with experience in their application, have benefits which transcend the classroom and enter the realm of professional, social, and intellectual accomplishment.
