Book A Measure of Endurance

Download or read book A Measure of Endurance written by William Mishler and published by Lindisfarne Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A MEASURE OF ENDURANCE knocked me down. I read it in two sittings, fascinated by its harrowing story and its tale of courage and integrity.... This is one of those rare books that prove once more the worth of human spirit, at its best, when most challenged." -Kent Haruf, author, Plainsong Now in paperback, this book records the remarkable, heartwarming story of a courageous teenage boy who, after being gravely injured while using a farm machine, takes on its powerful manufacturer and wins. Steven Sharp was a hardworking, energetic sixteen-year-old, growing up happily in a tiny farming community in the eastern Oregon high desert. His family was his harbor. Nothing pleased him more than the outdoor life, fending for himself in the nearby mountains. In the last hour of the last day of a summer job on a local ranch, his life was changed forever when a huge baler suddenly and mysteriously turned itself on and severed both his arms. Slipping in and out of consciousness and stumbling through a field, he followed a fence to a nearby house. Soon he was on an airplane and hoping time was on his side. His recovery was amazing. He maintained his optimism and zest for living and returned to school, joking to reassure his classmates on what could have been an awkward first day back. Eventually, he was back in his beloved mountains, hunting and fishing with the hospital's prosthetics and his own rigged-up rifle compensating for his missing arms. He was always convinced that the machine had malfunctioned, but had no intention to seek redress-farm life has its risks and compensations. By a quirk of fate, however, a friend recalled a notice in a three-year-old magazine and he learned that others hadbeen injured while using the same kind of machine. How, with the help of a brilliant and idealistic trial lawyer named Bill Manning-whose commitment to Steven seemed something of a completion of his own spiritual journey-Steven took on the multinational, multibillion-dollar company, withstood their counterattack, and emerged triumphant.

Book Questioning the Carrier

Download or read book Questioning the Carrier written by Jeff Vandenengel and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is naval history’s most powerful and versatile warship. It is the reason the U.S. Navy is the predominant force at sea today. Throughout its illustrious history, the carrier has overcome serious flaws, including its expense, vulnerability, centralization of combat power, and its airwing’s short range. The U.S. Navy always accepted those flaws because the carrier was the best means of delivering firepower. Today’s technologies, however, provide key opportunities for the U.S. Navy to move beyond the limitations of a carrier-centric fleet by redesigning its force structure. Questioning the Carrier examines how the U.S. Navy can embrace the Age of the Missile, network the distributed fleet, and diversify to develop a fleet that benefits from the aircraft carrier’s many strengths without being wholly dependent on them. By acting on those opportunities, the U.S. Navy can develop a structure that performs the carrier-centric fleet’s functions more effectively using a force consisting of more platforms with less total risk and within the same long-term budget. As adversaries are improving their ability to deter the carrier thus causing its utility to wane, the author examines the Navy’s past successes to show how it can overcome institutional resistance to change and continue to rule the seas.

Book Without Precedent

Download or read book Without Precedent written by Anna R. Hayes and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first woman judge in the state of North Carolina and the first woman in the United States to be elected chief justice of a state supreme court, Susie Marshall Sharp (1907-1996) broke new ground for women in the legal profession. When she retired in 1979, she left a legacy burnished by her tireless pursuit of lucidity in the law, honesty in judges, and humane conditions in prisons. Anna Hayes presents Sharp's career as an attorney, distinguished judge, and politician within the context of the social mores, the legal profession, and the political battles of her day, illuminated by a careful and revealing examination of Sharp's family background, private life, and personality. Judge Sharp was viewed by contemporaries as the quintessential spinster, who had sacrificed marriage and family life for a successful career. The letters and journals she wrote throughout her life, however, reveal that Sharp led a rich private life in which her love affairs occupied a major place, unsuspected by the public or even her closest friends and family. With unrestricted access to Sharp's abundant journals, papers, and notes, Anna Hayes uncovers the story of a brilliant woman who transcended the limits of her times, who opened the way for women who followed her, and who improved the quality of justice for the citizens of her state. Without Precedent also tells the story of a complicated woman, at once deeply conservative and startlingly modern, whose intriguing self-contradictions reflect the complexity of human nature.

Book Insecure Gulf

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kristian Coates Ulrichsen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-01-04
  • ISBN : 019025744X
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Insecure Gulf written by Kristian Coates Ulrichsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insecure Gulf examines how the concept of Arabian/Persian Gulf 'security' is evolving in response to new challenges that are increasingly non-military and longer-term. Food, water and energy security, managing and mitigating the impact of environmental degradation and climate change, addressing demographic pressures and the youth bulge and reformulating structural economic deficiencies, in addition to dealing with the fallout from progressive state failure in Yemen, require a broad, global and multi-dimensional approach to Gulf security. While 'traditional' threats from Iraq, Iran, nuclear proliferation and trans-national terrorism remain robust, these new challenges to Gulf security have the potential to strike at the heart of the social contract and redistributive mechanisms that bind state and society in the Arab oil monarchies. Insecure Gulf explores the relationship between 'traditional' and 'new' security challenges and situates them within the changing political economy of the GCC states as they move toward post-oil structures of governance. It describes how regimes are anticipating and reacting to the shifting security paradigm, and contextualizes these changes within the broader political, economic, social and demographic framework. It also argues that a holistic approach to security is necessary for regimes to renew their sources of legitimacy in a globalizing world.
