Book Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa

Download or read book Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa written by Msangi Josephine Phillip and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a close examination of water scarcity as a developmental challenge facing member nations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the interventions that have been implemented to combat the situation and the challenges still outstanding. The first chapter paints the backdrop of the water scarcity problem, reviewing historical approaches from the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002) to the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development (2012), and recapping principles and agreements reached during and after these conferences. Chapter two examines the Southern Africa region’s efforts to combat water scarcity including principles, policies and strategies and the responsibility of each member to implement them. Written by the editor, J.P. Msangi, the chapter describes Namibia’s efforts to ensure management of scarce water. Beyond enacting management and pollution control regulations and raising public awareness, Namibia encourages research to ensure attainment of the requirements of both the SADC Protocol and its own water scarcity management laws. The next three chapters offer Namibia-based case studies on impacts of pollution on water treatment; on the effects of anthropogenic activities on water quality and on the effects of water transfers from dams upstream of Von Bach dam. The final chapter provides detailed summaries of the issues discussed in the book, highlighting conclusions and offering recommendations. Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa synthesizes issues pertinent to the SADC countries as well as to other regions, and offers research that up to now has not been conducted in Namibia.

Book Hydropolitics in the Developing World

Download or read book Hydropolitics in the Developing World written by Anthony Turton and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing contributions by a variety of authors together in one volume is part of an attempt to show that hydropolitics is a growing discipline in its own right. The prevailing definition of hydropolitics is widened to include the elements of scale and range. This is illustrated through a focus on theoretical and legal issues, case studies from Southern Africa and a proposed research agenda. The book is an important addition to the literature on hydropolitics.

Book International Waters in Southern Africa

Download or read book International Waters in Southern Africa written by Mikiyasu Nakayama and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa is one of the world's most critical regions in terms of the management of shared water resources. This is due to a number of factors including: the large disparity in the availability of water between the relatively wet northern part of the region and the drier south; and the fact that the first transboundary transfer of water occurred in this region, between Lesotho and South Africa. This book examines both the risks and opportunities for water management in the new political environment in the region. Issues discussed include: the role of public participation, transboundary freshwater treaties; institutional aspects of international water system management; and hydropolitics.

Book Shared Waters Shared Opportunities

Download or read book Shared Waters Shared Opportunities written by Bernard Calas and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of watercourses to human life and development cannot be overemphasised. From communication, trade, agriculture and the location of human settlements, they have played an immeasurable role. Almost 60% of Africa lies within shared rivers and lake basins. The Nile is shared by more than seven nations, the Zambezi by six, and the Congo by nine. With populations on the rise, many countries have been labeled water scarce nations, and in fifteen years it is predicted that many people on earth will be exposed to water shortage consequences such as famine and disease. Thirteen African nations already suffer water stress and soon another twelve will join the list unless something is done to thwart the problem. On March 20, 2009 in Nairobi, Hekima College collaborated with Jesuit Hakimani Centre and the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) to host the Hekima College Water Day Academic Seminar with the theme Shared Waters, Shared Opportunities. This book is the result of critical research and presentations by internationally renowned scholars, researchers and experts, and students of the Institute of Peace Studies and International RelationsHekima College. For most of 2009 Kenya suffered severe problems caused by flooding which took many lives and destroyed homes and important infrastructures. It highlighted the issues of water management and water conflicts, not only in Kenya but in other parts of East Africa, as it was made abundantly clear that not only scarcity of water, but excess water, incorrectly managed, can be disastrous. This timely, scholarly book presents discussions of the issues which underlie the major water crises in the region. They open the debate into the water problems of Kenya and East Africa in an effort to join the global campaign to find solutions to these difficulties.

Book Transforming Water Management in South Africa

Download or read book Transforming Water Management in South Africa written by Barbara Schreiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the early set of reforms that South Africa embarked on after emerging from apartheid was in the water sector, following a remarkable, consultative process. The policy and legal reforms were comprehensive and covered almost all aspects of water management including revolutionary changes in defining and allocating rights to water, radical reforms in water management and supply institutions, the introduction of the protection of environmental flows, and major shifts in charging for water use and in the provision of free basic water. Over ten years of implementation of these policy and legislative changes mean that valuable lessons have already been learned and useful experiences gained in the challenge of effective water resources management and water services provision in a middle income country.
