Book excerpt: "Saving" The Giving Tree As part of my Bachelor of Education degree (over twenty years ago now!) we were asked to write a children's story. I chose to rewrite Shel Silverstein's classic, The Giving Tree, in a brighter light. I always felt this touching story was a little too sad. I also felt it missed the opportunity to impart an important perspective; the messages of stewardship and symbiosis, central to First Nations and Aboriginal cultures the world over. This is the message I hope this book can share with new generations of young people. As a Canadian of Metis heritage, I feel it is an important message. There are other parts of First Nations culture touched upon as well. I have taken literary license in their incorporation. Tobacco and smudging are sacred rites, and they are meant to show respect, just not necessarily in the way they are portrayed here. Flutes and love songs are also a part of many cultures as are canoes and the use of lodge poles. I hope this book can also act as a springboard for further study. This story offers a different perspective on the friendship that can exist between human (the boy Meekwun) and nature (as personified through the tree). Informed from the First Nations' perspective of stewardship over the Earth, this re-imagining is one that offers a view of interdependence and encourages young readers and adults alike to be more thoughtful in their interactions with our living home. It is meant to be read and enjoyed by individual readers and as a sharing opportunity for discussion between children and their care-givers, teachers, friends and classmates as they define their own relationship to our home. It has been particularly rewarding to use this book as a comparative literature study with my students over the years when read in contrast to Mr. Silverstein's book as well. Sean Thompson, 2020

Book Sharing Sean

  • Author : Frances Pye
  • Publisher : Harper Collins

  • ISBN : 0061751707
  • Pages : 479 pages

Download or read book Sharing Sean written by Frances Pye and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing Sean is a fabulously entertaining, and comedic debut novel in which four women in their late thirties–with no time, or desire for a full time relationship–hatch a plan to "share" a man. Not all women read bridal magazines, shop for dates on the internet, and covet the letters M., R., and S.. Some women prefer their baggage to be the purse variety and aren't seeking love or even fidelity–just a man who is willing to play by her rules. In the smart, wry, entertaining debut novel, Sharing Sean, Frances Pye introduces four such women in their late thirties–with no time, or desire for a committed relationship–and the unintended consequences that result when they hatch a bold plan to share one Mr. Right. Singles Lily, Terry, Jules and Mara meet for Sunday brunch at least once a month to bemoan the lack of a man who'll meet their individual needs. Lily longs for two or three nights a week of uncomplicated–but passionate–sex; Terry, wants a stand–in father figure for her teenage son; Jules is looking for some no–strings–attached–sperm to fulfil her dream of becoming a parent; and Mara, a widow, needs just enough intrigue to help her begin to let go of the bittersweet memories of her deceased husband. They're each equally frustrated until Sean comes into Lily's life. The owner of a small construction company, Sean is great–looking and in bed. Initially he even agrees to Lily's terms for a relationship. But ultimately, he is left longing for more than just sex, and when he presses her for a bigger commitment, Lily dumps him. But over a long Sunday brunch, it becomes clear that Sean could give each of them exactly what they need. So, Lily decides the best solution for all is to share him! Audacious and unconventional, their plan is downright scandalous–and all the more brilliant, if they can pull it off without Sean's knowledge. Trouble being, even though these resourceful women think they can offer him everything he wants: sex; admiration; friendship; children–sometimes a man just doesn't want to be the object of so many desires..or hidden agendas!

Book The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Competition

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Competition written by Dr. Sherril Dodds and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, values of competition underpin the free-market economy and aspirations of individual achievement shape the broader social world. Consequently, ideas of winning and losing, success and failure, judgment and worth, influence the dance that we see and do. Across stage, studio, street, and screen, economies of competition impact bodily aesthetics, choreographic strategies, and danced meanings. In formalized competitions, dancers are judged according to industry standards to accumulate social capital and financial gain. Within the capitalist economy, dancing bodies compete to win positions in prestigious companies, while choreographers hustle to secure funding and attract audiences. On the social dance floor, dancers participate in dance-offs that often include unspoken, but nevertheless complex, rules of bodily engagement. And the media attraction to the drama and spectacle of competition regularly plays out in reality television shows, film documentaries, and Hollywood cinema. Drawing upon a diverse collection of dances across history and geography, The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Competition asks how competition affects the presentation and experience of dance and, in response, how dancing bodies negotiate, critique, and resist the aesthetic and social structures of the competition paradigm.

Book Not Stupid

Download or read book Not Stupid written by Anna Kennedy and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Anna and Sean Kennedy discovered that one of their sons had asperger's syndrome and that their other son was autistic, they were truly devastated - but their family's troubles were just the beginning.Turned away by no fewer than 26 special needs schools when searching for appropriate educational facilities for their boys, Anna and Sean were down - but not out. Anna was determined to prove that for children like their sons, the challenges of growing up with autism - to demonstrate to the world that they were simply Not Stupid - did not have to end in defeat. Through sheer guts and determination, they turned their situation into a victory by establishing a centre of excellence for the care and support of those with autism. With more than half a million people in Britain affected by autism, it is little wonder that their school quickly became over-subscribed - proof that educational provision in this field is inadequate in the United Kingdom today, and proof also that it is still possible to transform a vision into reality through simply not giving up. Anna's story, and that of her ever-improving sons, is a beacon of inspiration for parents of special needs children all over the country. Not Stupid offers a readers a rollercoaster of emotions but most of all it offers a real sense of hope for those whose lives are affected by autism.

What are love, wisdom, humor, ritual, evil, and justice? Jewish children’s literature matters for all children, and with this practical guide parents and teachers will be empowered to choose and discuss books and stories with Jewish or non-Jewish children. Enduring Questions includes extensive bibliographies of Jewish children’s literature, digital resources for teachers, and suggestions for further reading. With summaries of suggested books and texts, honest recommendations from teachers who have used these texts in the classroom, and practical curricular connections, this comprehensive book is suited for those looking for an introduction to teaching Jewish children's literature and those familiar with it. The book provides a framework about the use of Jewish children’s literature as an opportunity for all children, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to be philosophers and engage in dialog and debate. The enduring questions thoughtfully explored through Jewish literature are important for all students growing up in a diverse multicultural world.

Book The Creative Reflective Practitioner

Download or read book The Creative Reflective Practitioner written by Linda Candy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Creative Reflective Practitioner explores research and practice through the eyes of people with a wholehearted commitment to creative work. It reveals what it means to be a reflective creative practitioner, whether working alone, in collaboration with others, with digital technology or doing research, and what we can learn from listening and observing closely. It gives the reader new insights into the fascinating challenge that having a reflective creative mindset can bring. Creative reflective practice is seen through practitioner ideas and works which have informed the writing at every level, supported by research studies and historical accounts. The practitioners featured in this book represent a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary creative activities producing works in film, music, drama, dance and interactive installations. Their work is innovative, full of new ideas and exciting to experience, offering engagement and challenge for audiences and participants alike. Practitioner interviews give a direct sense of how they see creative practice from the inside. The ways in which these different situations of practice stimulate and facilitate reflection in practice and how we can learn from this are described. Variations of reflective practice are discussed that extend the original concepts proposed by Donald Schön, and a contemporary dimension is added through the role of the digital in creative reflective practice as a tool, mediator, medium and partner. This book is relevant to people who wish to understand creativity and reflection in practice and how to learn from the practitioners themselves. This includes researchers in any discipline as well as students, arts professionals and practitioners such as artists, curators, designers, musicians, performers, producers and technologists.
