Book Shared Wealth and Symbol

Download or read book Shared Wealth and Symbol written by Lenore Manderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-12-26 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1987 volume brought together for the first time a range of essays on the anthropology of food in Oceania and Southeast Asia. The essays reflect research in the field, primarily that undertaken by Australian scholars. The volume focuses on four main concerns: factors that influence the production of food and dietary behaviour; the way in which people think and speak about diet and nutrition, including concepts of hunger and the classification of foods; infant feeding practice, including the promotion of bottle feeding; and the roles of government agencies and multinational corporations. The regional focus of the volume also allows for discussion of common trends, especially those that have arisen as a result of societies in the region having been incorporated into the world economy. Applicable elsewhere in the world, the volume offers a basis for a comparative analysis of food in culture and society.

Book excerpt: Why do we behave the way we do? Biologist Paul Ehrlich suggests that although people share a common genetic code, these genes "do not shout commands at us...at the very most, they whisper suggestions." He argues that human nature is not so much result of genetic coding; rather, it is heavily influenced by cultural conditioning and environmental factors. With personal anecdotes, a well-written narrative, and clear examples, Human Natures is a major work of synthesis and scholarship as well as a valuable primer on genetics and evolution that makes complex scientific concepts accessible to lay readers.

Book Changing Food Habits

Download or read book Changing Food Habits written by Carola Lentz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. This book examines process of change in African, South African and European countries by analysing the ways in which food is an integral part of ongoing ecological, economic, political and social transformations. It also provides research on dietary changes from direct intervention by people and agencies. The majority of these fascinating case studies are based on original fieldwork, they are quite diverse, as are the nature and scope of changes considered. The authors discuss rural as well as urban modes of food consumption, dietary changes in different societal contexts, and food-based rituals. The cases presented suggest alterative readings of some established models of changing food habits, and contribute to a more comprehensive history of dietary transformations.

Book Wealth in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Qumran Community

Download or read book Wealth in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Qumran Community written by Catherine Murphy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with exploring sectarian attitudes toward wealth and the economic practices that gave rise to and issued from those attitudes. An introductory chapter establishes the state of the question. Three subsequent chapters focus on major sectarian texts: the Damascus Document, the Rule of the Community, and 4QInstruction A. Other sectarian and non-sectarian texts that mention wealth are discussed in a fifth chapter, while archaeological evidence from the Qumran region and contemporary documentary texts are introduced in chapters seven and eight. Finally, ancient secondary testimony on Essene economic practices is discussed. The book breaks new ground in arguing for several biblical rationales for the practice of shared wealth. Its integration of archaeological and documentary evidence sheds surprising new light on the economic organization of the Qumran community.

Book Regulating Menstruation

Download or read book Regulating Menstruation written by Etienne van de Walle and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Menstruation, seen alternately as something negative—a "curse" or a failed conception—or as a positive part of the reproductive process to be celebrated as evidence of fertility, has long been a universal concern. How women interpret and react to menstruation and its absence reflects their individual needs both historically as well as in the contemporary cultural, social, economic, and political context in which they live. This unique volume considers what is known of women's options and practices used to regulate menstruation—practices used to control the periodicity, quantity, color, and even consistency of menses—in different places and times, while revealing the ambiguity that those practices present. Originating from an Internet conference held in February 1998, this volume contains fourteen papers that have been revised and updated to cover everything from the impact of the birth control pill to contemporary views on reproduction to the pharmacological properties of various herbal substances, reflecting the historical, contemporary, and anthropological perspectives of this timely and complex issue.

Book The Essence of Japanese Cuisine

Download or read book The Essence of Japanese Cuisine written by Michael Ashkenazi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have shown a growing interest in cooking and food, as a result of international food issues such as BSE, world trade and mass foreign travel, and at the same time there has been growing interest in Japanese Studies since the 1970s. This volume brings together the two interests of Japan and food, examining both from a number of perspectives. The book reflects on the social and cultural side of Japanese food, and at the same time reflects also on the ways in which Japanese culture has been affected by food, a basic human institution. Providing the reader with the historical and social bases to understand how Japanese cuisine has been and is being shaped, this book assumes minimal familiarity with Japanese society, but instead explores the country through the topic of its cuisine.

Book Sharing Possessions

  • Author : Luke Timothy Johnson
  • Publisher : SCM Press
  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN : 9780334023319
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book Sharing Possessions written by Luke Timothy Johnson and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written as an exercise in theological reflection on one of the knottiest questions imaginable: the connection between being a Christian and the way we own and use things. Thinking is always hard work, and thinking about the things we own and use brings us to the very heart of our individual and collective sense of identity. Much of the book is devoted to what is said about possessions in the Bible; however, that cannot be presented as a neatly wrapped package. First, it is doubtful whether there is such a package, and second, even if there were, it could all too easily become just one more possession. Individuals have to struggle through to their own personal choice on the basis of serious thought. One point at which the author, who spent nine years as a monk, takes issue with the Christian tradition, is over communal possessions. Although this has been an ideal from the book of Acts onwards, it carries with it many dangers, from motivation to social control, and in a modern world other forms of sharing, above all almsgiving, are shown to have a more satisfactory theological foundation.

Book Sharing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philippe Aigrain

  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Sharing written by Philippe Aigrain and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the past fifteen years, file sharing of digital cultural works between individuals has been at the center of a number of debates on the future of culture itself. To some, sharing constitutes piracy, to be fought against and eradicated. Others see it as unavoidable, and table proposals to compensate for its harmful effects. Meanwhile, little progress has been made towards addressing the real challenges facing culture in a digital world. Sharing starts from a radically different viewpoint, namely that the non-market sharing of digital works is both legitimate and useful. It supports this premise with empirical research, demonstrating that non-market sharing leads to more diversity in the attention given to various works. Taking stock of what we have learned about the cultural economy in recent years, Sharing sets out the conditions necessary for valuable cultural functions to remain sustainable in this context."--[P] 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his pathbreaking Israel in Egypt James K. Hoffmeier sought to refute the claims of scholars who doubt the historical accuracy of the biblical account of the Israelite sojourn in Egypt. Analyzing a wealth of textual, archaeological, and geographical evidence, he put forth a thorough defenseof the biblical tradition. Hoffmeier now turns his attention to the Wilderness narratives of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. As director of the North Sinai Archaeological Project, Hoffmeier has led several excavations that have uncovered important new evidence supporting the Wilderness narratives, including a major New Kingdom fort at Tell el-Borg that was occupied during the Israelite exodus. Hoffmeier employs these archaeological findings to shed new light on the route of the exodus from Egypt. He also investigates the location of Mount Sinai, and offers a rebuttal to those who have soughtto locate it in northern Arabia and not in the Sinai peninsula as traditionally thought. Hoffmeier addresses how and when the Israelites could have lived in Sinai, as well as whether it would have been possible for Moses to write down the law received at Mount Sinai. Building on the new evidence forthe Israelite sojourn in Egypt, Hoffmeier explores the Egyptian influence on the Wilderness tradition. For example, he finds Egyptian elements in Israelite religious practices, including the use of the tabernacle, and points to a significant number of Egyptian personal names among the generation ofthe exodus. The origin of Israel is a subject of much debate and the wilderness tradition has been marginalized by those who challenge its credibility. In Ancient Israel in Sinai, Hoffmeier brings the Wilderness tradition to the forefront and makes a case for its authenticity based on solid evidenceand intelligent analysis.
