In a globalized world with manifold forms of forced and voluntary migrations, Jinn are likewise on the move, interfering in the human world and affecting the mental and physical health of Muslims. This continuous challenge has so far been mainly addressed by traditional Muslim health management and by the so-called spiritual medicine or medicine of the Prophet. This book shifts perspective. Its interdisciplinary chapters deal with the transformation of manifold cultural resources by first analyzing the doctrinal and cultural history of Jinn and the treatment of Jinn affliction in Arabic texts and other sources. It then discusses case studies of Muslims and current health management approaches in the Middle East, namely in Egypt and Syria. Finally, it turns to the role of Jinn in a number of migratory settings such as Spain, Denmark, Great Britain and Guantanamo.

Book excerpt: In 1951, on my return from an extensive tour of the Middle East, I was invited by the All India Radio to broadcast a series of talks in Arabic on Indian Muslims. These talks, luckily, were received favorably by some of the Indian missions lodged in that part of the world, and they suggested their publication in the form of a booklet. The All India Radio also broadcast them subsequently in some other languages and an international Arabic Journal, Muslims, of Damascus was good enough to bring them out in its columns in a number of installments. In the present compilation five new essays have, in all, been included which were not broadcast over the radio. These are: -Influence of Muslims on Indian Civilization -Role of Muslims in the Struggle for Freedom -Indo-Islamic Culture -Sufi-Saints of India and their Impact on Society -Current Difficulties and Problems It is hoped that the book, with these additions, will be read with interest among the educated circles of the various communities that go to make our people and prove of some value in reducing the ignorance and the attitude of indifference which exist in the sister-communities to wards the Muslims. It may, further, be helpful in promoting the growth of a broad, realistic, national perspective in the country it so badly needs today. It will also, perhaps, not be too much to expect that, apart from non- Muslim friends, many educated Muslims, too, will find in the.se pages something which will be new to them and will add to their knowledge about themselves and go some way, however little, towards ridding them of the inferior1ty complex they have developed lately, but for which there can be no justification. Every patch of its land and every particle of its soil bears the imprint of their greatness and is a monument to their industry, earnestness and creative genius. In every aspect of Indian life and civilizations can be seen evidences of their noble aestheticism and cultural richness.

Book excerpt: In Raf' al-Malām 'an al-A'imma al-A'lām Ibn Taymiyya pursues the argument as to why a mujtahid might depart from directly acting upon textual evidences. This forms the basis of his discussion regarding the causes underlying disagreements found among Muslim scholars in general and their holding differing legal opinions and proffering divergent arguments in support of those opinions. In this work, Ibn Taymiyya calls for tolerance and understanding of the conclusions arrived at by eminent Muslim scholars. Additionally, he insists that even if a scholar was to err in their judgement, it should not be assumed that they intentionally ignored textual evidence as there could be various reasons for what others consider to be a departure from textual evidences. Hence, according to Ibn Taymiyya, such scholars should not be seen as blameworthy and liable to punishment but rather they should be revered as scholars who exercised their right of ijtihad. Thus, even if such a scholar was thought to have erred, there would most certainly be a methodological reason behind such a departure, rather than an intentional contradiction of the relevant textual evidences. Additionally, Ibn Taymiyya asserts that liability for the punishment depends on the existence of certain conditions and the non-existence of impediments and he affirms that reaching certainty in this regard is almost impossible as this is clearly a very complex and complicated process. In this work it is evident that Ibn Taymiyya benefited from various traditions of learning in which he excelled, including jurisprudence, Hadith and philosophy and hence produced a remarkable work which has proved relevant from the time it was authored about eight centuries ago until our present day. This work contains the Arabic text Raf' al-Malām 'an al-A'imma al A'lām and its translation.

The book stresses that Islam did not appear all at once, but emerged slowly, as part of a prolonged process whereby it was differentiated from other religious traditions and, indeed, that much that we take as characteristic of Islam is in fact the product of the medieval period.
