Book Shape Transitions in Neutron rich Ru Isotopes

Download or read book Shape Transitions in Neutron rich Ru Isotopes written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectroscopy of neutron-rich {sup 109,110,111,112}Ru nuclei was studied by measuring the prompt [gamma] rays originated from fission fragments, produced by the 238U([alpha], f) fusion-fission reaction, in coincidence with the detection of both fragments. For {sup 109,111}Ru, both the negative-parity (h112 orbitals) and positive-parity (g--2 and/or d52 orbitals) bands were extended to substantially higher spin and excitation energy than known previously. The ground-state and [gamma]-vibrational bands of {sup 110,112}Ru also were extended to higher spin, allowing observation of the second band crossing at the rotational frequency of H"50 keV in 112Ru, which is H"0 keV above the first band crossing. At a similar rotational frequency, the first band crossing for the h112 band in 111Ru was observed, which is absent in 1°9Ru. These band crossings most likely are caused by the alignment of the g92 proton pair. This early onset of the band crossing for the aligned [pi]g92 orbitals may be evidence of a triaxial shape transition from prolate to oblate occurring in 111Ru. The data together with a comparison of cranked shell model predictions are presented.

Book Theoretical Study of Triaxial Shapes of Neutron rich Mo and Ru Nuclei

Download or read book Theoretical Study of Triaxial Shapes of Neutron rich Mo and Ru Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, whether atomic nuclei can possess triaxial shapes at their ground states is still a subject of ongoing debate. According to theory, good prospects for low-spin triaxiality are in the neutron-rich Mo-Ru region. Recently, transition quadrupole moments in rotational bands of even-mass neutron-rich isotopes of molybdenum and ruthenium nuclei have been measured. The new data have provided a challenge for theoretical descriptions invoking stable triaxial deformations. The purpose of this study is to understand experimental data on rotational bands in the neutron-rich Mo-Ru region, we carried out theoretical analysis of moments of inertia, shapes, and transition quadrupole moments of neutron-rich even-even nuclei around 110Ru using self-consistent mean-field and shell model techniques. Methods: To describe yrast structures in Mo and Ru isotopes, we use nuclear density functional theory (DFT) with the optimized energy density functional UNEDF0. We also apply triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) to describe yrast and positive-parity, near-yrast band structures. As a result, our self-consistent DFT calculations predict triaxial ground-state deformations in 106,108Mo and 108,110,112Ru and reproduce the observed low-frequency behavior of moments of inertia. As the rotational frequency increases, a negative-gamma structure, associated with the aligned [nu](h11/2)2 pair, becomes energetically favored. The computed transition quadrupole moments vary with angular momentum, which reflects deformation changes with rotation; those variations are consistent with experiment. The TPSM calculations explain the observed band structures assuming stable triaxial shapes. Lastly, the structure of neutron-rich even-even nuclei around Ru-110 is consistent with triaxial shape deformations. Our DFT and TPSM frameworks provide a consistent and complementary description of experimental data.

Book Shape and Structure of Neutron rich Nuclei from 252Cf Fission Fragments

Download or read book Shape and Structure of Neutron rich Nuclei from 252Cf Fission Fragments written by Jason Benjamin Snyder and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition quadrupole moments, Qt, of rotational bands in the neutron-rich, even-mass 102-108Mo and 108-112Ru nuclei were measured with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nuclei were populated as fission fragments from 252Cf fission. The detector setup consisted of the Gammasphere spectrometer and the Hercules fast-plastic array. This allowed the measurement of asymmetric DSAM lineshapes at different Gammasphere detector angles with respect to the fission axis. The measurements typically covered the 6 to 16h spin range of the ground-state band and at least a strong transition in the [gamma] band. At moderate spin, the Qt moments are found to be reduced with respect to the values near the ground states, the latter being reported in the literature. An attempt has been made (by Afanasjev) to describe the data in the framework of cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogolyubov theory, and the results are reported in the present work as well as in a Physics Letters paper by Snyder et al. For 104Mo reliable predictions can be made. Here an oblate shape and a low-spin triaxial shape (deformation parameter [gamma]~-44°), predicted to be favored in other theoretical calculations, are ruled out by the data. There is some indication for a gradual change, at higher spin, from an initially prolate shape to a triaxial shape in 104Mo. The Qt data for 106Mo and 110,112Ru support this picture. The challenge of theory to describe the Qt data is addressed, which has to do with the very [gamma]-soft potential-energy surfaces. As a byproduct of the Qt analysis (which requires the determination of the intensities of the feeding transitions), the transition intensities of many weak high-spin or non-yrast states have been determined. These previously unknown intensity data are also reported. In the appendix, the results of an attenuation-coefficient analysis for [gamma]-ray angular distributions (due to recoil-in-vacuum) in heavy Ba isotopes are reported. These results are from a separate project, though from the same data set.

Book Shape Transitions at High Spin

Download or read book Shape Transitions at High Spin written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes of nuclear shapes at high spin have been observed in several transitional nuclei, including 153 154Dy and 186Hg. In the Dy isotopes a transition from collective to single-particle character appears at high spin suggesting a change from prolate to oblate shapes. In 186Hg, decoupled i132 quasiparticle bands with prolate and oblate shapes may have been observed in two crossing bands. The present discussion focusses on the polarizing effect of high-j rotation-aligned particles on the soft cores of these nuclei. Studies of the decay of the compound nucleus 156Er, produced at the rather low excitation energy of 46 MeV in the reaction 64Ni + 92Zr, are also reported. Measurements of neutron spectra as a function of .gamma.-sum energy and of the neutron multiplicity distribution have been performed. Comparison with the results of statistical model calculations suggests a suppression of neutron emission and it is speculated that this might be due to trapping in a superdeformed well.

Book Interacting Boson Model from Energy Density Functionals

Download or read book Interacting Boson Model from Energy Density Functionals written by Kosuke Nomura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a novel and robust way of deriving a Hamiltonian of the interacting boson model based on microscopic nuclear energy density functional theory. Based on the fact that the multi-nucleon induced surface deformation of finite nucleus can be simulated by effective boson degrees of freedom, observables in the intrinsic frame, obtained from self-consistent mean-field method with a microscopic energy density functional, are mapped onto the boson analog. Thereby, the excitation spectra and the transition rates for the relevant collective states having good symmetry quantum numbers are calculated by the subsequent diagonalization of the mapped boson Hamiltonian. Because the density functional approach gives an accurate global description of nuclear bulk properties, the interacting boson model is derived for various situations of nuclear shape phenomena, including those of the exotic nuclei investigated at rare-isotope beam facilities around the world. This work provides, for the first time, crucial pieces of information about how the interacting boson model is justified and derived from nucleon degrees of freedom in a comprehensive manner.
