Book Shape Memory Actuators for Tab Assisted Control Surfaces

Download or read book Shape Memory Actuators for Tab Assisted Control Surfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actuation equations for a tab control system have been derived based on one-dimensional shape memory behavior. This actuation model accounts for the active tendon having to pull against the relaxing tendon in a two-tendon actuator. That is, the passive tendon will provide a negative moment, subtracting from the total moment available for moving the tab. In addition, studies on the heat convection of SMA in water and moving water have been performed in an attempt to determine the available control moment in moving water and to predict the amount of energy needed. These results identify the research issues that must be overcome in making a recommendation regarding the feasibility of using SMA in a submarine for actuation. The result is that use of SMA is feasible, but the exact performance results are not predictable with the current state-of-the-art in SMA modeling. Furthermore, predictive design models specific to applications in moving water are needed to understand the issues of: (1) exact moment prediction, (2) exact heat signature, and (3) control predictions for maneuvering.

Book Shape Memory Alloy Actuators

Download or read book Shape Memory Alloy Actuators written by Mohammad H. Elahinia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic approach to realizing NiTi shape memory alloy actuation, and is aimed at science and engineering students who would like to develop a better understanding of the behaviors of SMAs, and learn to design, simulate, control, and fabricate these actuators in a systematic approach. Several innovative biomedical applications of SMAs are discussed. These include orthopedic, rehabilitation, assistive, cardiovascular, and surgery devices and tools. To this end unique actuation mechanisms are discussed. These include antagonistic bi-stable shape memory-superelastic actuation, shape memory spring actuation, and multi axial tension-torsion actuation. These actuation mechanisms open new possibilities for creating adaptive structures and biomedical devices by using SMAs.

Download or read book Shape Memory Microactuators written by Manfred Kohl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineties, shape memory alloys (SMA) have become available for microsystems technology. Currently the breadth of research and development activities on SMA microactuators ranges from pure scientific topics of materials research to technological problems, such as micromachining, integration and contacting. The book gives an overview of recent achievements, describing the development of microvalves and linear actuators comprehensively from concept through prototype. Further key aspects included are three-dimensional models for handling complex SMA actuator geometries and coupled simulation routines that take multifunctional properties into account. Mechanical and thermal optimization criteria are introduced for actuator design, allowing an optimum use of the shape memory effect. It is shown that some of the prototypes presented, e.g. SMA microgrippers, already outperform conventional components.

Book DESIGN OF A SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY BASED TAB ROTATION ACTUATOR

Download or read book DESIGN OF A SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY BASED TAB ROTATION ACTUATOR written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : A shape memory alloy actuated wire actuated mechanism for tab rotation was designed, manufactured and tested. Antagonistic SMA wires are applied for activating the actuation to enable the tab rotate in both directions. Locking system and rotation sensor are comprised in this design. The system is supervised by a feedback rotation controller. Devices were fabricated with the shape memory alloy wire clamping mechanism and actuation with locking functions. The temperature-voltage relations of clamped SMA wires were predicted with an analytical model based on the thermomechanical study of NiTi done by Epps et al.[1] and Singh et al.[2]. The PID feedback controller was designed with optimized parameters to locate controlled voltage for precise tab angle actuation. The controller operation was tested with LabVIEW® System Design Software. With the feedback control, the relative differences between actuation angle and target angle were analyzed. Further investigation on this SMA -based tab rotation actuation were discussed including operation speed and accuracy.

Book Systems with Hysteresis

Download or read book Systems with Hysteresis written by Fayçal Ikhouane and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysterisis is a system property that is fundamental to a range of engineering applications as the components of systems with hysterisis are able to react differently to different forces applied to them. Control theory is used to model these complex systems and cause them to behave in the desired manner; the Bouc-Wen model is a well-known semi-physical model that is used extensively to describe the hysterisis of systems in the areas of smart structures and civil engineering. The Bouc-Wen model for system hysterisis has increased in popularity due to its capability of capturing in an analytical form a range of shapes of hysteretic cycles that match the behaviour of a wide class of hysteretic systems. “Systems with Hysterisis: Analysis, Identification and Control using the Bouc-Wen Model” deals with the analysis, identification and control of these systems, and offers a comprehensive and self-contained framework for the study of the Bouc-Wen model. Includes the latest techniques for modelling smart structures and materials Provides a rigorous mathematical treatment of the subject along with practical comments, numerical solutions and a case study of magentorheological (MR) dampers. Begins by analysing the compatibility of the Bouc-Wen model with the laws of physics, and continues to cover the relationship between the model parameters and hysterisis loop, identification of the model parameters and control of systems that include a hysteretic part described by the Bouc-Wen model. Includes case studies covering the identification and control of smart material transducers for use in automotive, aerospace and structural control Systems with Hysterisis: Analysis, Identification and Control using the Bouc-Wen Model offers an invaluable source of ideas, concepts and insights for engineers, researchers, lecturers and senior/ postgraduate students involved in the research, design and development of smart structures and related areas within civil and mechanical engineering. It will also be of interest to readers involved in the wider disciplines of electrical & control engineering, applied mathematics, applied physics and material science.
