Book Lost Horizon

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "LOST HORIZON - The Legend of Shangri-La" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents: Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, and particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia - a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world. In the novel, Hugh Conway, a veteran member of the British diplomatic service, finds inner peace, love, and a sense of purpose in Shangri-La, whose inhabitants enjoy unheard-of longevity. Among the book's themes is an allusion to the possibility of another cataclysmic world war brewing. It is said to have been inspired at least in part by accounts of travels in Tibetan borderlands, published in National Geographic by the explorer and botanist Joseph Rock. The remote communities he visited, such as Muli, show many similarities to the fictional Shangri-La. James Hilton (1900-1954) was an English novelist and Hollywood screenplayer best remembered for his best-sellers Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. --Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the dictionary, Shangri-la is a fictional place, a mystical, harmonious valley enclosed in the Himalayan Mountains of Tibet. It's the place where the character, Larry Darrell, in The Razor's Edge, found his atonement with God. When he returned to the confused world we live in, he realized he was still in this world but no longer of it. Having achieved the elusive state of selflessness, he returns to the United States. In the sequel, Stepping Stones to God, Larry lives the remainder of his life on this plane as a true celibate, a priest of the Absolute. With the wisdom of a serpent and the gentleness of a dove, his only desire is to free those who cross his path of the illusions in which they are imprisoned. Shangri-la is also purported to be a place where life approaches perfection, a remote idyllic hideaway, a land of eternal youth which is protected by 'la' the Tibetan term for mountain pass. In Holy Scripture, Heaven is also protected from the profane. It is said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. And yet, Scripture mercifully tells us that heaven is closer than hands and feet. With that in mind, the author has provided a collection of stories where conflicts are resolved and happiness prevails. A place of refuge in these times of strife. Between these covers - a few moments of Shangri-la within reach of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001 the Chinese government announced that the precise location of Shangrilaa place that previously had existed only in fictionhad been identified in Zhongdian County, Yunnan. Since then, Sino-Tibetan borderlands in Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, and the Tibet Autonomous Region have been the sites of numerous state projects of tourism development and nature conservation, which have in turn attracted throngs of backpackers, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs who seek to experience, protect, and profit from the regions landscapes. Mapping Shangrila advances a view of landscapes as media of governance, representation, and resistance, examining how they are reshaping cultural economies, political ecologies of resource use, subjectivities, and interethnic relations. Chapters illuminate topics such as the role of Han and Tibetan literary representations of border landscapes in the formation of ethnic identities; the remaking of Chinese national geographic imaginaries through tourism in the Yading Nature Reserve; the role of The Nature Conservancy and other transnational environmental organizations in struggles over culture and environmental governance; the way in which matsutake mushroom and caterpillar fungus commodity chains are reshaping montane landscapes; and contestations over the changing roles of mountain deities and their mediums as both interact with increasingly intensive nature conservation and state-sponsored capitalism.
