Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems from an ever-wandering poet, Janine Pommy Vega. American Book Review wrote, "She is changed by her journey through the world, and she changes the world through her words." Janine Pommy Vega writes with quiet command of her life and times and of our shared American present. Here are protests against the depravities of the prison system, political poems grounded in closely observed human particulars. Here too are tender lyrics about family, lovers, and friends; celebrations of the natural and domestic worlds of upstate New York; and remarkably vivid letters home from spiritual sojourns through Italy, Germany, and the former Yugoslavia. "Vega's poems reflect a deeply felt and aching knowledge. They 'go' (as Kerouac said) their own patient, unadorned, and dignified way," wrote Publishers Weekly of her previous collection, Mad Dogs of Trieste.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diane di Prima: Visionary Poetics and the Hidden Religions reveals how central di Prima was in the discovery, articulation and dissemination of the major themes of the Beat and hippie countercultures from the fifties to the present. Di Prima (1934--) was at the center of literary, artistic, and musical culture in New York City. She also was at the energetic fulcrum of the Beat movement and, with Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka), edited The Floating Bear (1961-69), a central publication of the period to which William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Charles Olson, and Frank O'Hara contributed. Di Prima was also a pioneer in her challenges to conventional assumptions regarding love, sexuality, marriage, and the role of women. David Stephen Calonne charts the life work of di Prima through close readings of her poetry, prose, and autobiographical writings, exploring her thorough immersion in world spiritual traditions and how these studies informed both the form and content of her oeuvre. Di Prima's engagement in what she would call “the hidden religions” can be divided into several phases: her years at Swarthmore College and in New York; her move to San Francisco and immersion in Zen; her researches into the I Ching, Paracelsus, John Dee, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, alchemy, Tarot, and Kabbalah of the mid-sixties; and her later interest in Tibetan Buddhism. Diane di Prima: Visionary Poetics and the Hidden Religions is the first monograph devoted to a writer of genius whose prolific work is notable for its stylistic variety, wit and humor, struggle for social justice, and philosophical depth.

Book The Blood Poets Millennial blues from Apocalypse now to The matrix

Download or read book The Blood Poets Millennial blues from Apocalypse now to The matrix written by Jake Horsley and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, society questions the connection between violence in entertainment and violence in life. Moralists and censors would reply resoundingly that media violence and social violence are directly linked, but others ask the deeper question: Why do people feel the need to create images of violence, and why do audiences continually watch them? In this thought-provoking and insightful study of American violent cinema, author Jake Horsley attempts to answer these questions by tying together the multiple disciplines of psychology, criminology, censorship, and anthropology. Horsley divides the forty years of his study into two volumes: American Chaos: From Touch of Evil to The Terminator, and Millennial Blues: From Apocalypse Now to The Matrix. These volumes aim to provide both a critical overview of the films themselves and a cultural study of the social and psychological factors relating to the demand for screen violence. By doing so, Horsley raises a new dialogue between scholars and movie buffs to examine the need to portray and the need to watch violent films.

Book excerpt: The day I was born, I knew immediately I’d probably made a mistake, thinking another life in Midgard would be easy. This life would be difficult, but I couldn’t go back. I am committed now. The Mystic Landscape presents a myth—or perhaps a fairy tale—about a mortal man and woman and the way they find each other. Through their travels through the nine worlds, they discover a deep love for each other. They encounter devils, demons, ogres, shamans, angels, and gods through the course of a journey up into mountains and down to the bottom of oceans. Through the nine worlds of mythology, they ultimately find their love for each other remaining even after death. This is a story told through imagination and intuition beyond and behind the physical material world that most of us believe we know. This narrative blends prose and poetry to share an imaginative tale about the love of two people as it spans time, place, and worlds of mythology, even defying death.
