Pingyang’s chief of police is as corrupt as he is sadistic and he rules the town with an iron fist. He soon learns of the new arrival in town and fleeces Wang Bin for all he’s worth. Wang Bin narrowly escapes Pingyang with the help of Xiao Zhou, a pretty young receptionist at the seedy hotel in which he is staying and for whom he is developing feelings, and the Beijinger vows to return to the town, his mind set on causing the crooked police chief’s downfall. Together with Xiao Zhou and a cast of other victimised townsfolk from Pingyang, Wang Bin concocts a plan that is so far-fetched all agree it might just work. Book A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian Bisexual and Trans Movement

Download or read book A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian Bisexual and Trans Movement written by Saskia Wieringa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the history of the Indonesian LBT movement is charted, from invisibility, to visibility and now as it moves again into hiding. In the early 1980s, during the oppressive military dictatorship called the New Order in Indonesia, the first organizations of Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans persons were established. They were short-lived, but prepared the ground for a more comprehensive LBT rights movement after the democratic opening of society in 1998. From 2000 to 2015 the visibility of the movement grew, until a vicious state-sponsored backlash set in, driven by majoritarian, fundamentalist Islamist groups. Saskia Wieringa tracks the movement's progress and explores the persistence of the butch/femme model of relationships; the proliferations of identities; family violence and conversion therapy; religion; and the anti-LGBT campaign. In its insistence on the local dynamics of this movement, the book aims to debunk the idea that homosexuality is a Western import. Chapters deal with the many religious and secular phenomena that are linked with gender diversity and same-sex relations traditionally, and the erasure of many of these traditions is explained using the concept of postcolonial amnesia. A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Movement is also a contribution to the growing literature on decolonization studies, pointing out that its dynamics, its historical course and its present condition, different as they are from the dominant Western view on a global LGBT movement, needs to be considered as valuable as accounts of Western LGBT histories are.

The essays collected here topics ranging from Hindu mythology to modern gamelan music. Book Cosmogony and Creation in Balinese Tradition

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is stranger than fiction. Considerably so. Judge from this: The Javanese develop a feeling towards their afterbirth, wbich is not thrown away at birth in the heathenish Western way, but which gets a decent burial and has the name: ari-ari, younger brother (- sister) . I know of a Javanese schoolgirl who wTote in an essay: "How couldn't I have tender feelings towards the spot where my ari-ari lies buried?" The Balinese are in the happy position of having no less than four elder brothers (sisters). The 'concomitants of physical birth', being the amniotic fluid, the blood, the vernix caseosa and the afterbirth together are the baby's kanda mpat, bis four elder brothers, or her elder ~isters in the case of a girl. Though the first three, due to their liquid state, mostly disappear and receive little care, the ari-ari is carefully buried under a round riverstone of about one foot in diameter, for a boy at the one side of the steps leading to the sleeping house, for a girl at the other side. The innumerable writipgs, partially or completely dealing with the kanda mpat, do not weary from inculcating their readers that the four are helpful as long as one gives them the (material) food and reverential thoughts they are entitled to, in which case they from their side behave as true eIder brothers. U. however, one neglects and ignores them, they punish their younger brother.

Download or read book The Wisdom of Bali written by Anand Krishna and published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "World class tourism destination Bali is well-known for her natural beauty and exotic culture. But within beautiful Bali hides another type of 'beauty': the pearls of wisdom to heed and practice. Bali's indigenous wisdom is laden with philosophical and universal values and is also very relevant for addressing the global problems modern people face daily. These pearls of wisdom were born out of a thoughtful civilization that champions the simplicity of mind and respect of nature, integrating these ideas into every aspect of life itself. There are only a handful of authors who write about and analyze Balinese wisdom in such depth, yet in a very down-to-earth way. Here, Anand Krishna brings back such wisdom long forgotten, long abandoned by even the contemporary Balinese themselves. *** "Anand Krishna's book comes at the right time, in the right place to help us deeply understand the foundation of Balinese Spirituality, how it sustains daily life, and how it fits within the context of an Indonesian democracy based on the ideal of Unity in Plurality." ---Margot Anand, Author of many books translated in 16 languages (the latest: The Art of Everyday Ecstasy) "By practicing the values contained in this book, we can end all suffering and attain to the supreme bliss. We can eliminate the ill effects of Kali Yuga, or the maddening Iron Age here and now, in this very life." ---Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung, Balinese High Priest "Krishna again invites us on a journey of discovery to those places where only the true enquirer is welcomed--where only the true enquiry is heard. The light he throws on his subject--any subject, is both edifying and harsh. For it is that rare quality of light which is hard fought and hard won--earned through the temperance of vigilance and grace. We should all of us meet the spirit of his words with a measure of real gratitude." ---Sacha Stone, Founder of Humanitad Foundation Director-General of Europe-I.R.E.O (Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization) "Indeed, the lofty spiritual and cultural values presented in this book--the indigenous pearls of Balinese Wisdom--are, in fact, very universal in nature. These values can be practiced by anyone irrespective of the religious, social and other differences." ---Prof. Dr. dr. Luh Ketut Suryani SpKJ, Founder of Suryani Institute for Mental Health"

  • Author : Margaret J. Wiener
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1995-04-15
  • ISBN : 0226885828

Download or read book Visible and Invisible Realms written by Margaret J. Wiener and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-04-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908, the ruler of the Balinese realm of Klungkung and more than 100 members of his family and court were massacred when they marched deliberately into the fire of the Dutch colonial army. The question of what their action meant and its continued significance in contemporary Klungkung forms the basis of Margaret Wiener's complex anthropolological history. Wiener challenges colonial and academic claims that Klungkung had no "real" power and argues that such claims enabled colonial domination. By focusing on Balinese discourses she makes clear the choices open to Balinese, both at the time of the Dutch conquest and in its narration. At the same time, she shows how these discourses, which revolve around magical weapons acquired from invisible agents such as gods, spirits, and ancestors, offer an alternative understanding of Klungkung's power. Moving between Balinese and Dutch narratives and between past and present, Wiener critiques colonial accounts by recounting Balinese memories and interpretations. Her attention to history and local situations illuminates the ways in which colonialism and orientalist scholarship have obscured the power of indigenous rulers and shows how Klungkung, once Bali's paramount realm, was relegated to a peripheral corner of the Indonesian nation-state. Both as a fascinating story and as a rich example of interdisciplinary scholarship, this book will interest students of colonialism, anthropology, history, religion, and Southeast Asia.
