Book Comic Transformations in Shakespeare

Download or read book Comic Transformations in Shakespeare written by Ruth Nevo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980. In this study of Shakespeare's ten early comedies, from The Comedy of Errors to Twelfth Night, the concept of a dynamic of comic form is developed; the Falstaff plays are seen as a watershed, and the emergence of new comic protagonists - the resourceful, anti-romantic romantic heroine and the Fool - as the summit of the achievement. The plays are explored from three complementary perspectives - theoretical, developmental and interpretative which lead to a further understanding of the powerful relation between the plays' formal complexity and their naturalistic verisimilitude.

Book The Comedy of Errors Annotated

Download or read book The Comedy of Errors Annotated written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comedy of Errors is one of William Shakespeare's early plays. It is his shortest and one of his most farcical comedies, with a major part of the humour coming from slapstick and mistaken identity, in addition to puns and word play. The Comedy of Errors is, along with The Tempest, one of only two Shakespeare plays to observe the Aristotelian principle of unity of time-that is, that the events of a play should occur over 24 hours. It has been adapted for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre numerous times worldwide. In the centuries following its premiere, the play's title has entered the popular English lexicon as an idiom for "an event or series of events made ridiculous by the number of errors that were made throughout"

Book Shakespeare s Comedy of the Tempest

Download or read book Shakespeare s Comedy of the Tempest written by Homer B. Sprague and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Comedy of the Tempest: With Suggestions and Plays for Study, Topics for Essays, Etc This edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest is designed to meet especially the wants of teachers and students, but it is hoped that many others may find it useful. Of course all the notes will not be alike valuable to each, but probably nine of every ten readers will find in them something helpful. If it be asked, "Why add another to the many school editions?" the following points of difference between it and most if not all of the other editions may be mentioned: - 1. The notes are intended to stimulate rather than supersede thought. 2. The results of many of the latest studies in interpretation by scholars have been given. 3. The edition continually presents for choice the various opinions of leading editors and commentators. 4. It suggests some of the best methods of studying English literature, and of making the finest passages the basis of lessons in language and rhetoric. 5. It contains critical comments by Assistant Professor Wendell, Dr. Furness, and other recent writers, as well as by Coleridge, Schlegel, and other geniuses of past generations; also topics for essays, and an unusually copious index. 6. Out of regard for the feelings of youth, it treats with more delicacy than most editions certain passages difficult to handle in mixed classes.
