Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Stratford It must be noted, however, that the picturesque question was not in accordance with knowledge or tradition. There is nothing to Support the implied theory that Hamlet and the other plays were written in the Henley Street cottage, nor do any of the many legends clustering around that structure claim for it so high an honour. But to credit Shakespeare with the deliberate choice of a literary workshop is all of a piece with the uncertainty in which so much of his life-story is involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and Stratford-Upon-Avon: A Chronicle of the Time The paragon of all patience thought he should hear of something to his advantage if his enemy would write a book. Book-making in all forms has been a serious undertaking at all times - never more so than at present; but I am in this work free from many of the anxieties of authorship. I have not written a book: this is only a compilation. The confession will strike the intelligent reader, who may have dipped into these pages before glancing at the preface, as less necessary than that of the very old master who, having painted a model specimen of the feline tribe, attached the celebrated inscription This 18 a cat. Book Reliques of Stratford on Avon

Download or read book Reliques of Stratford on Avon written by A. E. Way and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reliques of Stratford-on-Avon: A Souvenir of Shakespeare's Home N the little country town of stratford-upon-avon, in Warwickshire, Shakespeare was born on April 22nd, 1564, and so the place attained to the greatest honour which any town in the British Isles can lay claim to that in it first saw the light the poet of poets and the dramatist of all time. Stratford had quietly existed for centuries before, and was very little affected by its good fortune and even at the present day it is but little changed from Shakespeare's time. How different from the London to which he came, in his early days, to acquire that fame which so quickly became his. Could he now revisit the two places, he would hardly recognise a building in the London of to-day, certainly none in his old haunts in Southwark. But at Stratford, how different! Three and a half centuries have not altered it'to any great extent, and it is still easy to realise something of his life in the town where he was born, educated, and married, and whither he returned, after a moderate interval in London, to settle down and enjoy the latter end of his all too brief career. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Shakespeare on Horseback" And "Shakespeare No Dog Fancier" Papers Read Before the Stratford-Upon-Avon Shakespeare Club, March 3rd, 1887, and January 11th, 1892 The two following Papers are offered as slight contribution to a section of Shakespearean Literature which is constantly increasing, and in which the personal characteristics of the Poet are sought in his Poems and Plays. They deal with certain strongly-marked likes and dislikes which crop up with curious and suggestive frequency all through his works, and have no more ambitious purpose than that of showing their bearings, and where they may be found. Thus, as in the tragedy of "Hamlet," Polonius says: - "Thus do we, of wisdom and of reach. With windlaces, and with assays of bias, By indirections find deductions out." The Society before which the Papers were read and discussed began its career early in the present century, and has from time to time played a leading part in the various festivals, feasts, and commemorative gatherings which have affectionately honoured the memory of Shakespeare in his native town. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stratford Records and the Shakespeare Autotypes: A Brief Review of Singular Delusions That Are Current at Stratford-on-Avon Singular misconceptions being prevalent at Stratford respecting my record-work and the treatment that I have met with in that town, I am tempted to devote a few pages to the subject; and the rather as those delusions have lately assumed a definite form and made a public appearance in the columns of an important local journal. The following, for example, is the commencement of a recent leading article in the Stratford-on-Avon Herald, a newspaper which has a large circulation in the town and neighbourhood, - The Stratford Corporation are in possession of many very interesting records extending from the earliest times, but it is only recently that the value of these documents has dawned upon the Corporate mind. They were permitted to lie in the muniment-room at the Birthplace unclassified, uncalendared, uncared for, and this indifference to their existence, had it continued, would have led ultimately to their decay, and consequent loss to the town. A little time ago attention was directed to the condition of these records, and the Corporation was prevailed upon to appoint a committee to superintend their classification and calendaring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Works: Illustrative of the Life and Writings of Shakespeare: The History of Stratford-on-Avon, and the Rise and Progress of the Early English Drama The object sought to be accomplished by the some what peculiar mode of circulation herein adopted is the preservation of a vast quantity of Shakespearian materials, useful to the student and critical reader, which are either too diffuse or too technical to be included in works prepared for the general public. Some of that numerous class, who believe they can always regulate the affairs of their neighbours to advantage, have very strongly advised me to increase the numbers of the impression of these books, and to lower their price! The argument, on the first statement, appears conclusive. It is this: - when once the type is set, the printing of five hundred copies costs little more than ten. Instead, therefore, in the case, for instance, of a book, the expenses for ten copies of which amount to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Self In short, Stratford was a thriving, busy, bustling little town 3 by no means sleepy full of active, alert men and women, workers almost all; a centre of life and trade to the neighbouring villages, in many of which Shakespeare had close relatives. Both in the ordinary affairs of life and in his work, the dramatist showed throughout his career his love for and full knowledge of his homeland, and a never-sated thirst for the sights and scenes of his boyhood. All his London time he showed keen interest in the doings of his fellow-townsmen and in the local politics of Stratford. In the end he returned there to spend his last days. Stratford was always his home. His contemporaries showed their appreciation of this fact by their never naming him in connection with London's Thames but with the Avon Of Stratford. Book Stratford as Connected With Shakespeare

Download or read book Stratford as Connected With Shakespeare written by Edwin Lees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stratford as Connected With Shakespeare: And the Bard's Rural Haunts After knowing this, the minute labours of the topo grapher become of little worth; nor shall we enter a field interesting only to the mere groper after manorial or antiquarian lore. We shall not repeat here the chronicles of a Dugdale or a Wheler; for it matters little who held the site of the town three centuries before the Norman Conquest or how a Saxon mo nastery came to be there, which was destroyed; and how the Bishops of Worcester became possessed of the place, and who followed them. These matters we leave for those whom they may concern; our business is to aid the pilgrim who may j ourney hither to the shrine of his idolatry, and trace Stratford principally in its connection with shakespeare. The author of Rambles by Rivers has traced the ideas of a stranger in connection with Stratford so justly, that though the pride of a native may not be much flattered by the remark, we shall quote it and act upon it; since whatever interest Stratford possesses, is now entirely associated with and linked to the reputa tion of shakespeare; and happy are those who, like Washington Irving, while aiming to follow the footsteps of the immortal bard, can add lustre to their own names in describing the local haunts of him who pic tured all the phases of many-coloured life.
