Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Select Plays: Macbeth Macbeth was printed for the first time in the folio of 1633, where it comes between Julius Casar and Hamlet, and occupies pages 131-151. It is divided throughout into acts and scenes. The text, though not so corrupt as that of some other plays - Coriolanus for example - is yet in many places very faulty, especially as regards the division of the lines. Probably it was printed from a transcript of the author's ms., which was in great part not copied from the original but written to dictation. This is confirmed by the fact that several of the most palpable blunders are blunders of the ear and not of the eye. Here, as elsewhere, we have great reason to join in the regret expressed by the editors of the first folio, that the author did not live to oversee' his own works before they were committed to the press. With regard to the time at which Macbeth was written, if we had the evidence of style alone to guide us, we should assign it to a period when Shakespeare had attained the full perfection of his powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Select Plays: First Part of King Henry IV The First Part of Henry the Fourth was entered at Stationers' Hall to Andrew Wyse on the 25th of February 159 7/8, under the title, 'The historye of Henry the iiijth with his battaile of Shrewsburye against Henry Hottspurre of the North with the conceipted mirthe of Sir John Falstoflf.' The entry to Master Woolff on 9 January 159 8/9, quoted by Steevens, refers to a different book, by Sir John Hayward, The first Part of the Life and Reigne of King Henrie the IIII, which was published in 1599. Other quarto editions of the play succeeded in 1599, 1604, 1608, 1613, 1622, 1632, and 1639. The version in the first Folio (1623) appears to have been printed from a partially corrected copy of the Quarto of 1613. It is probable that the play was written not long before it was entered at Stationers' Hall, perhaps in the early part of 1597. It had been acted and was become popular in 1598, for it is one of the plays which is mentioned in that year by Francis Meres in his Palladis Tamia, or Wits Commonwealth, as an example of Shakespeare's pre-eminence among English writers for Tragedy. For the historical portions of the play Shakespeare depended upon Holinshed, whose Chronicle, as in Richard the Second, he closely followed. The comic parts appear to have been suggested by a poor play which had been on the stage for about ten years and had attained some popularity, The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth. There must have been some shadow of worth about the man; he must have been something more than a mere vapour - a thing of straw, or Jack in Office - before Fabian and Maria could have ventured to send him upon a courting-errand to Olivia. There was some consonancy (as he would say) in the undertaking, or the jest would have been too bold even for that house of misrule. The date of its composition may be fixed with certainty. It is not included in the list of plays attributed to Shakespeare by Meres in his Palladis Tamia, which was published in 1598 and the reference in the Pro logue to Act V to Essex's expedition to Ireland shews that it must have been acted between March 27 and September 28, 1599. In all probability it was first represented in the summer of that year at the recently built Globe Theatre on Bankside. In the entries at Stationers' Hall we find on August [1600] 'henry the Ffift a booke, ' with As You Like It, Much Ado about Nothing, and Ben Jonson's Every Man in his Humour, was for some reason or other 'to be staied.' But on 14 August, among the copies entered to Thomas Pavyer is The historye of Henry the Vth with the battell of Agencourt.' This is evidently the quarto of 1600, the title of which is: 'the Cronicle History of Henry the fift, With his battell fought at Agz'n Court in France. Togither with A unte'em' Pistol].
