Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Paderborn (Fakultät für Kulturwissenschaften), course: Shakespeare: The Comedies, language: English, abstract: "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" is Shakespeare’s most enchanting comedy and one of his most popular plays. It is very lyrical and poetic, filled with magical beings from mythological worlds and the power of true love. Shakespeare’s age was the great time of fairy poetry in English literature, but no other work has influenced our visions of fairies as much as "A Midsummer Night’s Dream". Till today the idea of fairies, as we have them in our mind, is shaped by Shakespeare’s delighting comedy. The play can be interpreted as “a fantasia on love” , because love, it’s follies, absurdities, conflicts and even dangers draw a red line through the play: from the quarrel between the fairy king and queen, to the heroic love of Theseus for his war-conquered Amazon queen, to the love-chase of Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius, and to the enchanted experiences of Bot-tom. In nearly all of these love affairs the fairies have their (sometimes helping) hand engaged and they are thus very important agents in the main- and in the sub-plots. In this paper I will first take a survey of the historic belief in fairies in Shakespearian England, and then look at Shakespeare’s literary sources for the most important and most famous fairies who appear in this play, namely Oberon, Titania and Puck. Then I will show some parallels between the fairy queen Titania and Queen Elizabeth I, and afterwards I will analyze the quarrel between Oberon, king of fairies, and his wife. Finally I will give a comprehensive overview of the various ways of performing the play, both in theatre and in film.

Book excerpt: "Most of Shakespeare's plays involve fairies or magic, or both. Perhaps his most popular play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, brings fairies and the charming consequences of their magic to vivid life. And who can forget the famous incantation, "Double, double toil and trouble" from another favorite, Macbeth, which, epitomizes the magic spell for many." "Shakespeare on Fairies and Magic pairs the most memorable quotations from the bard with best of the illustrations and paintings that have illuminated his works. The combination of word and imagery work together to evoke the supernatural world; Titania is regal and beautiful, the three witches are terrifying hags, and Puck, as always, brings a wry smile to the face."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic, fairies, young lovers chasing each other through a forest, a man with a donkey's head, and impish Puck wreaking havoc right and left. What's going on here? It's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare at his most fanciful. The play opens with Theseus, Duke of Athens, preparing for his wedding. Egeus complains to Theseus that his daughter Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius... True love takes the stage at the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, as the fairies of the forest interfere with the lives of mortals attending the wedding feast. Although betrothed to Demetrius, Hermia is in love with Lysander and must choose between bowing to her father's wishes or a life of chastity. But Helena is in love with Demetrius, who only has eyes for Hermia. At the same time, Oberon, king of the fairies, seeks to punish his wife Titania using a love potion, as the realms of mortals and fairies collide on one magical midsummer night.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Midsummer Night's Dream is perhaps the best-loved of Shakespeare's plays, and certainly the one that children are likely to encounter first; its mixture of aristocrats, workers, and fairies meeting in a wood outside Athens has a magic of its own. Simple and engaging on the surface, it isnonetheless a highly original and sophisticated work, remarkable for both its literary and its theatrical mastery. The fact that it is one of the very few of Shakespeare's plays not to draw on a narrative source suggests the degree to which it reflects his deepest imaginative concerns. In his Introduction, defining the play in both the literary and theatrical traditions to which it belongs, Peter Holland pays particular attention to dreams and dreamers, tracing the materials out of which Shakespeare constructs his world of night and shadows in the strange but enchanting amalgam hemakes of them. Both here and in the detailed commentary he draws freely upon the play's extensive performance history to illustrate the wide range of interpretations of which it is capable.

It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta (the former queen of the Amazons). These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. The version published in the First Folio of 1623 was taken from a second quarto edition, with some reference to a promptbook. One of the "great" or "middle" comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream, with its multilayered examination of love and its vagaries, has long been one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays.Four Athenians run away to the forest only to have Puck the fairy make both of the boys fall in love with the same girl. The four run through the forest pursuing each other while Puck helps his master play a trick on the fairy queen. In the end, Puck reverses the magic, and the two couples reconcile and marry.
