Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of William Shakespeare More than ten years have now elapsed since this work was published for the first time in this country. In the present reissue errors have been corrected, the bibliographies have been brought up to date, and some additions of importance have been made to the bibliographical information. I hope that, with the additions and corrections that are now incorporated into the text or notes, the volumes embodies the results of all recent researches into Shakespeare's life, or into the biographical or bibliographical aspects of his work, about which the student of the poet's biography is entitled to expect information from the poet's biographer. A few references to Shakespeare have lately come to light for the first time in contemporary manuscripts. I have not found it practicable to note these discoveries in detail in the body of the revised book without disturbing the balance of the chapters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Shakespeare Worldly Empire has always been gluttonous and foolish. It has always been a monstrous sentimental bubble blown out of something dead that was once grand. Man's true empire is not in continents nor over the sea, but within himself, in his own soul. Here in London, where a worldly empire is con trolled, there exists no theatre in which the millions can see that other empire. They pass from one grey street to another grey street, to add up figures, or to swallow patent medicines, with no thought that life has been lived nobly, and burningly and knightly, for great ends, and in great passions, as the vision of our great mind declares. Book The True Story of Hamlet and Ophelia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True Story of Hamlet and Ophelia Classic Reprint written by Fredericka Raymond Beardsley Gilchrist and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of Hamlet and Ophelia It is possible to form a conception of an intelligent, intellectual, educated man to whom the Tragedy of Hamlet is unknown, to whom the name Hamlet conveys no idea; and until a critic places himself in the condition of impartiality and lack of prejudice in which this imaginary man would be, he is not perfectly fitted to judge of Shakespeare's greatest play. The conceptions and misconceptions imposed on him by actors and commentators must warp his judgment and control his understanding. It is asserted that Hamlet is a study for the closet, rather than a drama to be presented on the stage; and the authority for the assertion is the play itself, with its difficulties of stage interpretation. True it is, that our imaginary man, who had never heard of the Tragedy, would conclude that Booth's, or Barrett's, or Irving's, or Fechter's adaptation is not a coherent, self-explanatory dramatic work; its presentation would seem to him only a series of scarcely connected tableaux vivants, with fragments of descriptive dialogue. Book William Shakespeare

Download or read book William Shakespeare written by Samuel Levy Bensusan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Shakespeare: His Homes and Haunts To study the life history of a man and to consider its setting is to understand why he succeeded and how he came to fail, and our wonder at his success will not be lessened when we find that some simple event, favourable or untoward, was the deciding factor in a great life. The hour brings the man, but circumstances mould him and chance leads him to the fore, unless it be true that there's a Divinity that shapes our ends, rough hew them how we will. In our own time we have seen how the greatest empire-builder of Victorian history, Cecil John Rhodes, came into prominence because he was sent to South Africa for the cure of weak lungs. And, looking back to the life and times of William Shakespeare, who has summed up for so many of his fellow-countrymen, and still more strangers, the whole philosophy of life, we shall see that he became articulate through what he may have reasonably regarded as mischance. Book What We Really Know about Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book What We Really Know about Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Caroline Healey Dall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What We Really Know About Shakespeare During the last winter I listened to three differ ent addresses from the author of Atlantis, who thinks he has discovered a cipher in the First Folio, and that the story concealed by this cipher claims the Plays of Shakespeare as the work of Lord Bacon! Mr. Donnelly had a large audience, and on one of these occasions he addressed a literary club, and was answered at some length by two or three fair Shakespeare scholars. He stated in substance that Shakespeare was low-born, vilely bred, led an obscure life, and was a man who might easily be hired to cloak the personality of a superior who feared political disgrace. Download or read book Memoirs of the Life of William Shakespeare written by Richard Grant White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of William Shakespeare: With an Essay Toward the Expression of His Genius, and an Account of the Rise and Progress of the English Drama Collier's later work upon those subjects, by its ful ness and its systematic arrangement, supersedes all others, either for the use of the dramatic stu dent, or as a book of reference for the occasional inquirer. Yet the account of the English drama given in the following pages will be found to be something more, as well as something less, than an abridgment of Mr. Collier's three octavo vol nmes. These remarks apply only to the first and last divisions of this volume. The second, the Essay toward an Expression of Shakespeare's Genius, is the endeavor of one who, having read the poet much and his critics little, has thought his own thoughts and trusted his own judgment upon this subject, until, with a mingling of confidence and difi'idence which it would be difficult to explain, he now ventures to offer his conclusions as hints and aids to others; conscious the while that those who can judge them best are those who need them least. Book The Life of William Shakespeare

Download or read book The Life of William Shakespeare written by William Leavitt Stoddard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Shakespeare: Expurgated PROLOGUE "It seems a kind of respect due to the memory of excellent men, especially of those whom their wit and learning have made famous, to deliver some account of themselves, as well as of their works, to posterity. For this reason, how fond do we see some people of the great men of antiquity; their families, the common accidents of their lives, and even their shape, make, and features have been the subject of critical enquiries. How trifling soever this curiosity may seem to be, it is certainly very natural; and we are hardly satisfied with an account of any remarkable person till we have heard him described to the very clothes he wears. As for what relates to men of letters, the knowledge of an author may sometimes conduce to the better understanding of his book, and though the works of Mr. Shakespeare may seem to many not to want a comment, yet I fancy some little account of the man himself may not be thought improper."-From Nicholas Rowe's Account of the Life of Shakespeare, 1709. "I have not sought, (7 say) nor do I seek either to force or ensnare men's judgments, but I lead them to things themselves and the concordances of things, that they may see for themselves what they have, what they can dispute, what they can add and contribute to the common stock.
