Book Picture Book Professors

Download or read book Picture Book Professors written by Melissa M. Terras and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is academia portrayed in children's literature? This Element ambitiously surveys fictional professors in texts marketed towards children. Professors are overwhelmingly white and male, tending to be elderly scientists who fall into three stereotypes: the vehicle to explain scientific facts, the baffled genius, and the evil madman. By the late twentieth century, the stereotype of the male, mad, muddlehead, called Professor SomethingDumb, is formed in humorous yet pejorative fashion. This Element provides a publishing history of the role of academics in children's literature, questioning the book culture which promotes the enforcement of stereotypes regarding intellectual expertise in children's media. The Element is also available, with additional material, as Open Access.

Book Deleuze and the Three Syntheses of Time

Download or read book Deleuze and the Three Syntheses of Time written by Keith W. Faulkner and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the most important theory of time since Heidegger, Deleuze challenges Kant's unity of apperception, as well as the phenomenological account of time. This book, using the principles of structuralism, exposes how Freud's unconscious mechanisms synthesize time. It also gives a vibrant and original account of Deleuze's theory of the pure Event using detailed examples from Hamlet and Oedipus, as well as Nietzsche's doctrine of the eternal return. This book is essential reading for students and scholars who wish to understand Deleuze's dissolved subject as well as our modern sense of fragmented time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In relation to the problems faced today, in contemplation and in practical affairs, philosophers must confront the question 'What is knowledge?', and consider whether knowledge has lost its object. Such was the problem placed before the seminar convened by the Philosophical Society of Turkey at Ankara in 1989. The 17 papers derived from the lectures and discussions deal with problems of knowing and believing, of the kinds and criteria of knowledge, of truth and fallibility, and of the cultural as well as individual factors in cognition. The authors include Guido Küng, L. Jonathan Cohen, Ernest Sosa, Arda Denkel, Venant Cauchy, David Evans, Gürol Irzik, Ioanna Kuçuradi, Evandro Agazzi, Richard T. DeGeorge, Kwasi Wiredu, Teo Grünberg, H. Odera Oruka, Jindrich Zeleny, V.A. Lektorsky, Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, and Francisco Miro Quesada. Book Digital Content Creation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rae Earnshaw
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1447102932
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Digital Content Creation written by Rae Earnshaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very word "digital" has acquired a status that far exceeds its humble dictionary definition. Even the prefix digital, when associ ated with familiar sectors such as radio, television, photography and telecommunications, has reinvented these industries, and provided a unique opportunity to refresh them with new start-up companies, equipment, personnel, training and working practices - all of which are vital to modern national and international economies. The last century was a period in which new media stimulated new job opportunities, and in many cases created totally new sectors: video competed with film, CDs transformed LPs, and computer graphics threatened traditional graphic design sectors. Today, even the need for a physical medium is in question. The virtual digital domain allows the capture, processing, transmission, storage, retrieval and display of text, images, audio and animation without familiar materials such as paper, celluloid, magnetic tape and plastic. But moving from these media to the digital domain intro duces all sorts of problems, such as the conversion of analog archives, multimedia databases, content-based retrieval and the design of new content that exploits the benefits offered by digital systems. It is this issue of digital content creation that we address in this book. Authors from around the world were invited to comment on different aspects of digital content creation, and their contributions form the 23 chapters of this volume.

Book Psychology of Language and Thought

Download or read book Psychology of Language and Thought written by Robert W. Rieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that one would contemplate publication of a book such as this indicates both the maturity and the growth of activity that have taken place in the field of psycholinguistics over the past few decades. More over, the fact that psycholinguists and/or scholars of the history of ideas are interested in the history of their subject clearly demonstrates that much has been accomplished, and the time is indeed ripe for the reassess ment of whence we have come. In addition, perhaps this interest in our historical past suggests that psycholinguistics is at a critical stage in its development. There are many scholars who believe that this critical stage manifests itself primarily in a search for a new paradigm. It would seem only reasonable to suggest that when members of a profession are search ing for something new, more than likely they will take time to reflect on the past in the hope that it will facilitate the fulfillment of their quest. This book as such reflects a wide-ranging search for historical roots over a millenium of research in the psychology of language and thought. Furthermore, it also reflects an attempt to open the context by introducing the broader perspectives of the history of ideas and the history of science together with their reassessment of the method of science motivated from within psychology itself.
