Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespere's Predecessors: In the English Drama Between the years 1862 and 1865 I undertook a History of the Drama in England during the reigns of Elizabeth, James I., and Charles I. With this object in view I composed a series of essays, embracing the chief points in that history, and discussing the leading playwrights from the period of the Miracles down to that of Shirley. Having so far advanced toward the completion of this plan, I laid my manuscripts aside, discouraged partly by ill-health, partly by a conviction that the subject was beyond the scope and judgment of a literary beginner. These early studies I have now resumed. The present volume is the first instalment of a critical inquiry into the conditions of the English Drama, based upon work which I began some twenty years ago, but which has been entirely re-handled and revised. In the space of those twenty years the origins and evolution of our Drama have been amply treated and diligently explored by more than one distinguished and by many competent writers. Book Shakespeare s Roman Plays and Their Background Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Roman Plays and Their Background Shakespeare's Roman plays may be regarded as forming a group by themselves, less because they make use of practically the same authority and deal with similar subjects, than because they follow the same method of treatment, and that method is to a great extent peculiar to themselves. They have points of contact with the English histories, they have points of contact with the free tragedies, but they are not quite on a line with either class. It seems, therefore, possible and desirable to discuss them separately. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare s Hamlet Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare s Hamlet Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Hamlet William Shakespeare was baptized at Stratford-on-Avon on April 26, 1564, so that the date of his birth is probably April 22 or 23. He was the son of John Shakespeare, who had left his father's farm at Snitterfield about thirteen years before, and had come to Stratford, where he engaged in business (especially in the sale of agricultural produce), and became one of the prominent citizens of the town, holding office in the borough more than once. He married, in 1557, Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy farmer of excellent family, whose home was at Wilmcote, near Stratford. The dramatist, accordingly, came of good English stock. Shakespeare grew up in the little town of Stratford, in one of the most beautiful districts of England. He received his education in the Stratford grammar school, where he got the "small Latin and less Greek" with which Ben Jonson credited him. But his training, at least in Latin, was doubtless pretty thorough, and Jonson's statement must be interpreted in the light of his own very unusual scholarship. Download or read book Historical Tales from Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book Shakspere and His Predecessors

Download or read book Shakspere and His Predecessors written by Frederick S. Boas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere and His Predecessors In spite of the ever-increasing mass of Shaksperean literature, there is, so far as I am aware, no English work dealing in some detail with all the dramatist's writings in their approximate chronological order. The present volume is an attempt in this direction. Professor Dowden's fine study of Shakspere's Mind and Art, to which my debt is manifest, is, by virtue of its scope, most intimately concerned with the historical plays and the tragedies, and especially with those elements in them which help to reveal the personality of their author. What I have here aimed at is to discuss Shakspere's works in relation to their sources, to throw light on their technique and general import, and to bring out some of their points of contact with the literature of their own and earlier times. Hence in the opening chapters I have sketched the rise of the English drama, and have briefly indicated Shakspere's bond of kinship, not only with his immediate predecessors, but with the mediaeval playwrights. And throughout the volume I have given greater prominence than has, I think, been usual to those features in his works which link them to the pre-Renaissance period.
