Book An Examination of Verdi s Otello and Its Faithfulness to Shakespeare

Download or read book An Examination of Verdi s Otello and Its Faithfulness to Shakespeare written by Jane Hawes and published by Lewiston, N.Y. ; Queenston, Ont. : Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyzes how Verdi produced what is not only a monumental piece of music, but a remarkably effective and faithful adaptation. It examines how Verdi (and his librettist, Arrigo Boito) translated from speech to music, and what is required generally for a good adaptation. The study is primarily musical, although it examines literary matters as well. It examines principal characters and their relationships, the arias, the structure, and differences and similarities between Verdi and his source, Shakespeare.

Book excerpt: Though this great tragedy of unsurpassed intensity and emotion is played out against Renaissance splendor, its story of the doomed marriage of a Venetian senator’s daughter, Desdemona, to a Moorish general, Othello, is especially relevant to modern audiences. The differences in race and background create an initial tension that allows the horrifyingly envious villain Iago methodically to promote the “green-eyed monster” jealousy, until, in one of the most deeply moving scenes in theatrical history, the noble Moor destroys the woman he loves–only to discover too late that she was innocent. Each Edition Includes: • Comprehensive explanatory notes • Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship • Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English • Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories • An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

Book excerpt: Otello, Verdi's penultimate opera, was composed more than a dozen years after Aida, which he had intended to be his last work for the stage. He was persuaded by his publisher Giulio Ricordi to work with the librettist Arrigo Boito on an adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello; the resulting work is one of the supreme examples of Italian opera. Greeted with enormous enthusiasm at its premiere at La Scala in 1887, Otello immediately went on to huge success in all the major opera houses of the world. The richness of its musical and dramatic inventiveness is largely unmatched in Verdi's output, and its title role is perhaps the most demanding for the tenor in any Italian opera. This volume contains articles describing how Verdi was persuaded to write the opera and extracts from the extended correspondence between Verdi and Boito during the period of composition, as well as a detailed musical commentary and a historical survey of important productions and performers of the principal roles. The guide includes the full libretto with English translation, a discography, a bibliography, and DVD and website guides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly edition of Othello to give full attention to the work's bold treatment of racial themes. Shakespeare's decision to place a sympathetic black hero at the centre of his tragedy was unique in its time; but, as the lively introduction shows, the play's relationship to the history of racial thinking remains controversial. Designed to meet the needs of theatre professionals, as well as general readers, the edition includes an extensive performancehistory, a commentary illuminating the complexities of Shakespeare's language, and an indispensable appendix on the music in the play.

Book excerpt: Look out for a new book from Garry Wills, What the Qur'an Meant, coming fall 2017. "Riveting . . . a double-barreled salvo that hits two bull's-eyes." —The New York Times Book Review This dazzling study of the three operas that Giuseppe Verdi adapted from Shakespeare's plays takes readers on a wonderfully engaging journey through opera, music, literature, history, and the nature of genius. Verdi's Shakespeare explores the writing and staging of Macbetto (Macbeth), Otello (Othello), and Falstaff, operas by Verdi, an Italian composer who could not read a word of English but who adored Shakespeare. Delving into the fast-paced worlds of these men and the hands-on life of the stage that at once challenged them and gave flight to their brilliance, Wills, in his inimitable way, illuminates the birth of artistic creation.

Book excerpt: The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in the year approximately 1603, and based on the short story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but unfaithful ensign, Iago. Because of its varied and current themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike and has been the basis for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.

It was also included in the folio collection of 162 3, and was printed again in quarto in 16 30. These three copies differ more or less among themselves in particular, the folio has a number of passages, amounting in all to some hundred and sixty lines, that are wanting in the quarto of 1622. On the other hand, the latter has a few lines that are wanting in the folio while the quarto of 1630' seems to have been made up from. The other two. On the whole, the text has reached us in a pretty fair condition 5 though there are a few passages where the reading stands much in question, and gives little h0pe of being altogether cleared from doubt.

Book The Tragedie of Othello the Moor of Venice

Download or read book The Tragedie of Othello the Moor of Venice written by William Shakespeare and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). If there ever has been a groundbreaking edition that likewise returns the reader to the original Shakespeare text, it will be the Applause Folio Texts. If there has ever been an accessible version of the Folio, it is this edition, set for the first time in modern fonts. The Folio is the source of all other editions. The Folio text forces us to re-examine the assumptions and prejudices which have encumbered over four hundred years of scholarship and performance. Notes refer the reader to subsequent editorial interventions, and offer the reader a multiplicity of interpretations. Notes also advise the reader on variations between Folios and Quartos. The heavy mascara of four centuries of Shakespearean glossing has by now glossed over the original countenance of Shakespeare's work. Never has there been a Folio available in modern reading fonts. While other complete Folio editions continue to trade simply on the facsimile appearance of the Elizabethan "look," none of them is easily and practically utilized in general Shakespeare studies or performances.
