Colin Burrow's good sense, tact and balance as aneditor are deeply impressive.' -H. R. Woudhuysen, Times Literary SupplementThis is the only fully annotated and modernized edition to bring together Shakespeare's Sonnets as well as all his poems (including those attributed to him after his death). Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1865 edition was first printed in 1609 in London. Now, centuries after the Bard of Avon's death, his works remain popular, sought after, and worth republishing. This collection of sonnets is no different. This edition puts Shakespeare's fine 14-line poems in the spotlight, as it is devoid of any foreword, introduction, or any other type of writing but the sonnets. It includes all but one image - which is placed at the beginning of the book. In the absence of sonnet titles, the publishers did not make use of a table of contents. An index of first lines is provided instead, making it easier for the ardent Shakespeare fan to locate a particular sonnet out of the 154 included in the collection. It is delightful to discover that each page contains only a single sonnet, which facilitates clarity and ease of reading, aside from a satisfyingly "uncluttered" look. Reading the sonnets, one cannot but help sighing with delight at the beautiful rhymes and lines. The choice of words, combined with the fact that they do sound well with each other, makes lovers of the written word sigh with utter delight and joy. The romance oozing from virtually every line in Shakespeare's sonnets makes one keep reading one poem after the other compulsively. The clever themed grouping of the sonnets adds to the page-turning appeal of this edition. All in all, this is one volume to carry about, read, and re-read, especially when one needs a healthy dose of creative, or romantic, inspiration. Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold written by William Shakespeare and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'James Anthony has done something I would have confidently stated to be impossible. He has "translated" Shakespeare’s sonnets and he has done so with an insolent, loveable charm ... A dazzling success’ – Stephen Fry Rediscover the greatest love poetry ever written Shall I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re more delightful, always shining strong; High winds blow hard on flowering buds in May, And summer never seems to last that long... Shakespeare’s sonnets are some of the nation’s favourite lines of verse, but the Elizabethan language can make it difficult to really understand them. Many guides offer to clarify the meaning, but lose the magic of the words by explaining them away. James Anthony has done something boldly different. He has rewritten the whole series of poems as sonnets using modern language, while retaining the rhythm and rhyme patterns that gives them such power. In doing so he breathes new life into the original poems and opens them up for a modern readership, demystifying Shakespeare’s eternal poetry with provocative new translations and delightful new lines. Presented as an attractive book with the original sonnets facing their new translations, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems, made new.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sonnets of William Shakespeare: New Light and Old Evidence Should my grouping of the sonnets seem auda cions, it may be remembered that their first publisher only claimed to give the public a large number of Shakespeare's minor poems, as they reached his hands (probably from three distinct sources). I disclaim, in altering Thorpe's ar rangement, any attempt to alter Shakespeare. In my judgment, every lover and student of these poems has as good a right to change the order in which they are printed as their first pirate publisher, even a better right, if by so doing their interest is enhanced and their meaning clarified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Sonnets: Edited, With Notes I have given special attention to Mr. Lee's theories of the Sonnets, partly because he has developed and defended them at such length in his Life of Shakespeare (quite out of proportion to the space allotted to other controverted questions of importance), and partly be cause his book is, in most other respects, so scholarly and authoritative. As in all cases where I disagree with other authors, I have endeavoured to state Mr. Lee's opinions and arguments fairly - generally in his own words - and as fully as the space at my command would permit. Book First Readers of Shakespeare s Sonnets 1590 1790

Download or read book First Readers of Shakespeare s Sonnets 1590 1790 written by Faith D. Acker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than four centuries, cultural preferences, literary values, critical contexts, and personal tastes have governed readers’ responses to Shakespeare’s sonnets. Early private readers often considered these poems in light of the religious, political, and humanist values by which they lived. Other seventeenth- and eighteenth- century readers, such as stationers and editors, balanced their personal literary preferences against the imagined or actual interests of the literate public to whom they marketed carefully curated editions of the sonnets, often successfully. Whether public or private, however, many disparate sonnet interpretations from the sonnets’ first two centuries in print have been overlooked by modern sonnet scholarship, with its emphasis on narrative and amorous readings of the 1609 sequence. First Readers of Shakespeare’s Sonnets reintroduces many early readings of Shakespeare’s sonnets, arguing that studying the priorities and interpretations of these previous readers expands the modern critical applications of these poems, thereby affording them numerous future applications. This volume draws upon book history, manuscript studies, and editorial theory to recover four lost critical approaches to the sonnets, highlighting early readers’ interests in Shakespeare’s classical adaptations, political applicability, religious themes, and rhetorical skill during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronwen Wallace Memorial Award-winning poet Sonnet L'Abbé returns with her third collection, in which a mixed-race woman decomposes her inheritance of Shakespeare by breaking open the sonnet and inventing an entirely new poetic form. DOROTHY LIVESAY POETRY PRIZE FINALIST RAYMOND SOUSTER AWARD FINALIST How can poetry grapple with how some cultures assume the place of others? How can English-speaking writers use the English language to challenge the legacy of colonial literary values? In Sonnet's Shakespeare, one young, half-dougla (mixed South Asian and Black) poet tries to use "the master's tools" on the Bard's "house," attempting to dismantle his monumental place in her pysche and in the poetic canon. In a defiant act of literary patricide and a feat of painstaking poetic labour, Sonnet L'Abbé works with the pages of Shakespeare's sonnets as a space she will inhabit, as a place of power she will occupy. Letter by letter, she sits her own language down into the white spaces of Shakespeare's poems, until she overwhelms the original text and effectively erases Shakespeare's voice by subsuming his words into hers. In each of the 154 dense new poems of Sonnet's Shakespeare sits one "aggrocultured" Shakespearean sonnet--displaced, spoken over, but never entirely silenced. L'Abbé invented the process of Sonnet's Shakespeare to find a way to sing from a body that knows both oppression and privilege. She uses the procedural techniques of Oulipian constraint and erasure poetries to harness the raw energies of her hyperconfessional, trauma-forged lyric voice. This is an artist's magnum opus and mixed-race girlboy's diary; the voice of a settler on stolen Indigenous territories, a sexual assault survivor, a lover of Sylvia Plath and Public Enemy. Touching on such themes as gender identity, pop music, nationhood, video games, and the search for interracial love, this book is a poetic achievement of undeniable scope and significance.

It is named after the Twelfth Night holiday of the Christmas season. It was written around 1601 and first published in the First Folio in 1623. The main title is believed to be an afterthought, created after John Marston premiered a play titled What You Will during the course of the writing.
