Book Shakespeare in the Theatre Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare in the Theatre Classic Reprint written by William Poel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Theatre The interdependence of Shakespeare's dramatic art with the form of theatre for which Shakespeare wrote his plays is seldom emphasized. The ordinary reader and the everyday critic have no historic knowledge of the Elizabethan playhouse; and however full the Elizabethan dramas may be of allusions to the contemporary stage, the bias of modern dramatic students is so opposed to any belief in the superiority of past methods of acting Shakespeare over modern ones, as to effectually bar any serious inquiry. A few sceptics have recognized dimly that a conjoint study of Shakespeare and the stage for which he wrote is possible; but they have not conducted their researches either seriously or impartially, and their conclusions have proved disputable and disappointing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's: Comedy of Much Ado About Nothing This, by the way, is the first occurrence Of the poet's name in these Registers. The quarto of 1600 was, on the whole, well printed; and no other edition Of the play is known to have been issued previous to the publicationof the Folio of 1623. The printers of the latter appear to have used a copy Of the quarto belonging to the library of the theatre and corrected for the purposes Of the stage; but the changes are for the most part very slight and seldom for the better, as will be seen by our Afofes below. Download or read book Shakespeare on the State Classic Reprint written by William Winter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare on the State This volmne continues a theatrical chronicle on which I have worked, almost incessantly, for many years, and which I hope to live long enough to finish. The labor has been hard; the product of it, I venture to believe, will prove useful. Persons who consider the Theatre to be merely a shop and who view Theatrical Management as merely the Show Busi ness, cannot be, and are not, expected to feel, or pretend to feel, even the slightest interest in a work which relates to the history, and aims to illustrate the development, of the beautiful Art of Acting. Per m, on the other hand, who believe, as I do, that the Theatre exercises a vast influence on Society, and thould be cherished and stimulated as a potent agent of civih'zation, will, I am confident, favor the pursu ance of an attempt, - already approved by their cordial welcome of the First Series of these Studies, to present, in a suitably compendious form, an adhentic account of the manner in which, from the beginning, the Plays of Shakespeare have been acted. My purpose and plan are fully stated in the Preface tothefirstvolumeofmy searespeareonteestage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book William Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Shakespeare This book is written partly for the use of people who are reading Shakespeare, and partly to encourage the study of the plays. Though the plays are the greatest things ever made by the English mind it cannot be said that the English reverence their poet. There is no theatre in London set apart for the performance of Shakespeare. There is no theatre in London built for the right production of Shakespeare. There are not in the empire enough lovers of Shakespeare, or of the poetical drama, or of poetry, to take the British stage from the hands of ground landlords, and make it again glorious with the vision of the pageant of man. These are sad things; for art is the life. Art is the thought of men with vision. When art is scorned it is a sign that the men without vision are in power. "Where there is no vision the people perish." Worldly Empire has always been gluttonous and foolish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare and the Modern Stage

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Modern Stage written by Sidney Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and the Modern Stage: With Other Essays The eleven papers which are collected here were written between 1899 and 1905. With the exception of one, entitled "Aspects of Shakespeare's Philosophy" which is now printed for the first time, all were published in periodicals in the course of those six years. The articles treat of varied aspects of Shakespearean drama, its influences and traditions, but I think that all may be credited with sufficient unity of intention to warrant their combination in a single volume. Their main endeavour is to survey Shakespearean drama in relation to modem life, and to illustrate its living force in current affairs. Even in the papers which embody researches in sixteenth- or seventeenth-century dramatic history, I have sought to keep in view the bearings of the past on the present. A large portion of the book discusses, as its title indicates, methods of representing Shakespeare on the modem stage. The attempt is there made to define, in the light of experience, the conditions which are best calculated to conserve or increase Shakespeare's genuine vitality in the theatre of our own day. In revising the work for the press, I have deemed it advisable to submit the papers to a somewhat rigorous verbal revision. Book The Shakespearean Plays of Edwin Booth Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Shakespearean Plays of Edwin Booth Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Edwin Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespearean Plays of Edwin Booth, Vol. 1 The truth is that no one of Shakespeare's plays can be pre sented and spoken exactly as it is fashioned and written, and that. In the regular theatre, no one of them ever has been per formed, since Shakespeare's time, without some curtailment. In the Universities and on scholastic occasions the literal original has, now and then, been given. At Stratford-upon Avon, for example, during the Shakespeare Festival, in April, 1899, the whole of Hamle was represented, some of it in the afternoon and the rest of it in the evening. In Shakespeare's period, when theatrical performances oc curred in the day, and when but little use was made of scenery, the whole of such a piece as Richard III' might have been given, but no audience would endure it now. Every actor who, achieving distinction, has attained power, uses his own stage versions of Shakespeare, and if all those versions had been preserved we should possess, in writing, the stage traditions which now, for the most part, are preserved only in memory, of a rapidly vanishing race of players. A considerable number of the ms. Prompt-books used in Drury Lane Thea tre, in the Garrick period and later, do, indeed, exist, in the rich and very remarkable collection made by Augustin Daly but these are inaccessible to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Shakespeare's Comedies IT seems almost a sacrilege to present merely the amework - the dry bones - of those world-famed asterpieces of diction and character drawing, Plays; yet, for their right under enjoyment, it is useful to disentangle ricate and confused substructures upon h they are reared, which (with one possible ex on) were taken' by the poet from earlier plays d transformed and transfigured by his genius.
