Book excerpt: This volume takes a deep dive into the philosophical hermeneutics of Shakespearean tradition, providing insight into the foundations, theories, and methodologies of hermeneutics in Shakespeare. Central to this research, this volume investigates fundamental questions including: what is philosophical hermeneutics, why philosophical hermeneutics, what do literary and cultural hermeneutics do, and in what ways can literary and cultural hermeneutics benefit the interpretation of Shakespearean plays? Hermeneutic Shakespeare guides the reader through two main discussions. Beginning with the understanding of "Philosophical Hermeneutics", and the general principles of literary and cultural hermeneutics, the volume includes philosophers such as Friedrich Ast, Daniel Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Wilhelm Dilthey, as well as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and more recently, Steven Connor. Part Two of this volume applies universal principles of philosophical hermeneutics to explicate the historical, philosophical, acquired, and applied literary interpretations through the critical practices of Shakespeare’s plays or their adaptations, including Henry V, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, and The Comedy of Errors. Aimed at scholars and students alike, this volume aims to contribute to contemporary understanding of Shakespeare and literature hermeneutics. Chapters 2, 5, and 6 of this book are available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. They have been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. Funded by Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

Book The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage

Download or read book The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage written by Thomas Fulton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible was everywhere in Shakespeare's England. Through sermons, catechisms, treatises, artwork, literature and, of course, biblical reading itself, the stories and language of the Bible pervaded popular and elite culture. In recent years, scholars have demonstrated how thoroughly biblical allusions saturate Shakespearean plays. But Shakespeare's audiences were not simply well versed in the Bible's content - they were also steeped in the practices and methods of biblical interpretation. Reformation and counter-reformation debate focused not just on the biblical text, but - crucially - on how to read the text. The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage is the first volume to integrate the study of Shakespeare's plays with the vital history of Reformation practices of biblical interpretation. Bringing together the foremost international scholars in the field of 'Shakespeare and the Bible', these essays explore Shakespeare's engagement with scriptural interpretation in the tragedies, histories, comedies, and romances.

Book Shakespeare Orson Welles and the Hermeneutics of the Archive

Download or read book Shakespeare Orson Welles and the Hermeneutics of the Archive written by Benjamin Lynn Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the methods by which the public experienced Shakespeare’s plays, this project shows that in the 20th century film became the dominant medium by which audiences experienced Shakespeare for the first time. Using Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight as the principle example, I show that the hermeneutic right shifted away from Shakespeare and was instead taken on by directors reinterpreting Shakespeare’s version of history. Welles’ knowing manipulation of the archontic function empowers his film, affecting subsequent interpretation and placing it squarely in the Shakespearean film canon.

Download or read book Shakespeare Hermeneutics Or the Still Lion written by C. M. Ingleby and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Hermeneutics, or the Still Lion: Being an Essay Towards the Restoration of Shakespeare's Text The ensuing essay was originally written for the Jahrbucher of the German Shakespeare Society, and was published at Berlin in the volume for 1867. The author saw but one proof of it before its publication, and in consequence the imprint was disfigured by an immense number of press-errors, only a few of which were detected before the volume was issued. The editor, Dr. Friedrich von Bodenstedt, voluntarily conceded to the author of the essay the Society's permission to reprint it in England. This, however, was not done till 1874-5, when, owing to the pressure put upon him by several of his friends - in particular by Mr. Joseph Crosby, of Zanesville, Ohio, and Mr. C. J. Monro, of Hadley - the author enlarged and reprinted it, and presented the edition to the New Shakspere Society. As there was still an unsatisfied demand for the little volume, he has once more enlarged and reprinted it; and it is now, for the first time, published in England. Book Critical Hermeneutics and Shakespeare s History Plays

Download or read book Critical Hermeneutics and Shakespeare s History Plays written by William M. Hawley and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides new insights into the theatrical and philosophical foundations of Shakespeare's history plays through a dialogue with the theories of Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Paul Ricoeur. Widely regarded to be anti-historical and nihilistic, Derrida and Foucault are shown to hold as responsible an attitude toward politics, truth, and art as Ricoeur. In the author's close critique of the ten plays, the sometimes conflicting views of these theorists reveal Shakespeare's developing historical understanding. Rather than promulgating a single historical perspective, Shakespeare's «historiography» plays afford pluralistic views of myth, politics, gender, sexuality, intersubjectivity, and religion because of their profound theatricality. Shakespeare's «detour» into history and culture thus joins the skeptical dimension of critical hermeneutics.
