Download or read book Italian Studies in Shakespeare and His Contemporaries written by Michele Marrapodi and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume set out to present some significant Italian contributions to Shakespeare studies that, scattered through a number of publications not available outside Italy, might have escaped the attention they deserve. They are representative, though by no means exhaustively, of approaches to Shakespeare and his contemporaries in Italy, and may convey a sense of the vitality and extreme variety of critical and scholarly attitudes in this field.

  • Publisher : Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre

  • ISBN : 9782877758413
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Shakespeare on screen The Henriad written by Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin (éd.) and published by Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. This book was released on with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filming plays from a tetralogy of history plays implies specific problems and strategies. The papers in this volume show that the plays are parts of a series, and can hardly be staged or filmed without referring to one another. What does the big screen bring to the representation of history, battles and national issues? When do ideological interpretations stop being triggered by the text itself? By deciphering the different ways in which meaning is created and ideology is conveyed, whether it be through specific aesthetics, performances, intertextuality or cultural codes, the papers in this volume all take part in the on-going exploration of what Shakespeare's contrasting afterlives keep saying, not only about the dramatic texts but also about ourselves.

Book Shakespeare on screen Richard III

Download or read book Shakespeare on screen Richard III written by Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin and published by Publication Univ Rouen Havre. This book was released on with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume does not only provide the reader with diverging assessments of the Richard III films, but it also deploys a large array of methodologies used to study ‘Shakespeare on film’. What gives the volume its coherence is that it thoroughly interrogates what those films do with and to Shakespeare’s text and suggests that, at least for Shakespearean scholars, Shakespearean films are hybrid creatures. They are and are not films; they are and are not Shakespeare. Book Shakespeare Italy and Transnational Exchange

Download or read book Shakespeare Italy and Transnational Exchange written by Enza De Francisci and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary, transhistorical collection brings together international scholars from English literature, Italian studies, performance history, and comparative literature to offer new perspectives on the vibrant engagements between Shakespeare and Italian theatre, literary culture, and politics, from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. Chapters address the intricate, two-way exchange between Shakespeare and Italy: how the artistic and intellectual culture of Renaissance Italy shaped Shakespeare’s drama in his own time, and how the afterlife of Shakespeare’s work and reputation in Italy since the eighteenth century has permeated Italian drama, poetry, opera, novels, and film. Responding to exciting recent scholarship on Shakespeare and Italy, as well as transnational theatre, this volume moves beyond conventional source study and familiar questions about influence, location, and adaptation to propose instead a new, evolving paradigm of cultural interchange. Essays in this volume, ranging in methodology from archival research to repertory study, are unified by an interest in how Shakespeare’s works represent and enact exchanges across the linguistic, cultural, and political boundaries separating England and Italy. Arranged chronologically, chapters address historically-contingent cultural negotiations: from networks, intertextual dialogues, and exchanges of ideas and people in the early modern period to questions of authenticity and formations of Italian cultural and national identity in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. They also explore problems of originality and ownership in twentieth- and twenty-first-century translations of Shakespeare’s works, and new settings and new media in highly personalized revisions that often make a paradoxical return to earlier origins. This book captures, defines, and explains these lively, shifting currents of cultural interchange.

Book Shakespeare and Crisis

Download or read book Shakespeare and Crisis written by Silvia Bigliazzi and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and Crisis: One hundred years of Italian narratives explores how Shakespeare intervened in the Italian socio-political and cultural scene between his third and fourth centenaries, at times which were manifestly perceived as ‘critical’. It asks which complex mythopoietic processes contributed to shaping regimes of reading Shakespeare in response to those times of crisis. Crises of national identity during the Great War and the Fascist regime, crises of history in the 1970s, and crises of representation in the second half of the twentieth century extending into the new millennium constitute the three main areas of a discussion that ultimately aims at probing into the role of literature at times of crisis. The volume situates itself at the juncture of European Shakespeare studies and studies of Shakespeare and Italy. It addresses essential questions about the position of literature in society, offering at different levels new insights for scholars, students, and the general reader.

Book Migrating Shakespeare

Download or read book Migrating Shakespeare written by Janet Clare and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrating Shakespeare offers the first study of the earliest waves of Shakespeare's migration into Europe. Charting the spread of the reception and production of his plays across the continent, it examines how Shakespeare contributed to national cultures and – in some cases – nation building. The chapters explore the routes and cultural networks through which Shakespeare entered European consciousness, from first translations to stage adaptations and critical response. The role of strolling players and actors, translators and printers, poets and dramatists, is chronicled alongside the larger political and cultural movements shaping nations. Each individual case discloses the national, literary and theatrical issues Shakespeare encountered, revealing not only how cultures have accommodated and adapted Shakespeare on their own terms but their interpretative contribution to the texts. Taken collectively the volume addresses key questions about Shakespeare's naturalization or reluctant accommodation within other cultures, inaugurating his present global reach.

Book Shakespeare s Global Sonnets

Download or read book Shakespeare s Global Sonnets written by Jane Kingsley-Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together scholars from across the world, including France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Japan, the USA and India, to offer a truly international perspective on the global reception of Shakespeare’s Sonnets from the 18th century to the present. Global Shakespeare has never been so local and familiar as it is today. The translation, appropriation and teaching of Shakespeare’s plays across the world have been the subject of much important recent work in Shakespeare studies, as have the ethics of Shakespeare’s globalization. Within this discussion, however, the Sonnets are often overlooked. This book offers a new global history of the Sonnets, including the first substantial study of their translation and of their performance in theatre, music and film. It will appeal to anyone interested in the reception of the Sonnets, and of Shakespeare across the world.
