Book Shakespeare and the Outer Mystery

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Outer Mystery written by Robert H. West and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare has been viewed by critics both as a secular writer who affirmed the dual nature of man and as a Christian allegorist whose work has a submerged but positive and elaborate pattern of Christian meaning. In Shakespeare and the Outer Mystery, Robert H. West explores the philosophical and supernatural elements of five Shakespearean dramas—Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. Through his analysis, West discovers Shakespeare's respect for the mysteries of existence but no clear definition of the philosophical and moral context of his play worlds. An artistic motivation leads Shakespeare to use these elements ambiguously to create a dramatic effect rather than to teach a moral or ideological lesson.

Book Incest Drama and Nature s Law 1550 1700

Download or read book Incest Drama and Nature s Law 1550 1700 written by Richard A. McCabe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a full-length study of incest in English Renaissance and Restoration drama. Richard McCabe's comprehensive survey offers a literary history of this theme, informed by an investigation of the intellectual background, with particular emphasis on changing concepts of natural law, and consequent reassessments of classical tradition. It examines a wide range of theological, philosophical, legal and literary sources, in the context of modern psychological and sociological theories of family development. Extensive comparisons with classical models and contemporary European dramatists, from Tasso to Corneille and Racine, explore the volatile association between dramatic form and emotional content, structural experiment and sexual ambivalence. The centrality of the family to all human relationships, and the mutual reflection of familial politics and the patriarchal state make incest a powerful metaphor for the ambivalence of all concepts of 'natural' authority, and for various forms of social and political revolt.

Book Christian Settings in Shakespeare s Tragedies

Download or read book Christian Settings in Shakespeare s Tragedies written by D. Douglas Waters and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 1994 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battenhouse's Shakespearean tragedy: Its art and Christian premises, Irving Ribner's Patterns in Shakespearian tragedy, Virgil K. Whitaker's The mirror up to nature: The techniques of Shakespeare's tragedies, and Robert Grams Hunter's Shakespeare and the mystery of God's judgments. Waters questions, for example, Battenhouse's validity of Christian theological and didactic emphases on the old purgation theory of catharsis. His approach differs also from Northrop Frye's views on the tragedies in Northrop Frye on Shakespeare, an archetypal approach to representative plays including the tragedies.

Book Hamlet and Other Shakespearean Essays

Download or read book Hamlet and Other Shakespearean Essays written by L. C. Knights and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-10-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these Shakespearean essays originally published together in 1979, the distinguished literary critic L. C. Knights offers the fruits of his long-term thinking about individual plays (notably, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Lear) and explores the ways in which a deep and imaginative understanding of Shakespeare's work can relate to and enrich other areas of knowledge - politics, history, social and emotional relationships, the nature of theatrical experience ... Certain critical assumptions are of course implicit here: that great works of art have a continuing life which is renewed through perception; that the vitality generated by such works is for all men and that the critic's function is to encourage all readers to see as much as they can for themselves, not to dogmatize or try to impose a particular reading. L. C. Knights admirably fulfils this function in these essays most of which have been gathered from the three volumes entitled Explorations, Further Explorations and Explorations 3.

Book When the Bad Bleeds

    Book Details:
  • Author : Imke Pannen
  • Publisher : V&R unipress GmbH
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 389971640X
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book When the Bad Bleeds written by Imke Pannen and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2010 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mantic elements are manifold in the English drama of the Renaissance period: they are supernatural manifestations and have a prophetic, future-determining function within the dramatic plot, which can be difficult to discern. Addressing contemporaries of Shakespeare, this study interprets a representative number of revenge tragedies, among them The Spanish Tragedy, The White Devil, and The Revenger's Tragedy, to draw general conclusions about the use of mantic elements in this genre. The analysis of the cultural context and the functionalisation of mantic elements in revenge tragedy of the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline era show their essential function in the construction of the plot. Mantic elements create and stimulate audience expectations. They are not only rhetoric decorum, but structural elements, and convey knowledge about the genre, the fate of which is determined by retaliation. An interpretation of revenge tragedy is only possible if mantic providentialism is taken into account.
