Book Shaggy Muses

Download or read book Shaggy Muses written by Maureen Adams and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You’ll call this sentimental–perhaps–but then a dog somehow represents the private side of life, the play side,” Virginia Woolf confessed to a friend. And it is this private, playful side, the richness and power of the bond between five great women writers and their dogs, that Maureen Adams celebrates in this deeply engaging book. In Shaggy Muses, we visit Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Flush, the golden Cocker Spaniel who danced the poet away from death, back to life and human love. We roam the wild Yorkshire moors with Emily Brontë, whose fierce Mastiff mix, Keeper, provided a safe and loving outlet for the writer’s equally fierce spirit. We enter the creative sanctum of Emily Dickinson, which she shared only with Carlo, the gentle, giant Newfoundland who soothed her emotional terrors. We mingle with Edith Wharton, whose ever-faithful Pekes warmed her lonely heart during her restless travels among Europe and America’ s social and intellectual elite. We are privileged guests in the fragile universe of Virginia Woolf, who depended for emotional support and sanity not only on her human loved ones but also on her dogs, especially Pinka–a gift from her lover, Vita Sackville-West–a black Cocker Spaniel who became a strong, bright thread in the fabric of Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s life together. Based on diaries, letters, and other contemporary accounts–and featuring many illustrations of the writers and their dogs– these five miniature biographies allow us unparalleled intimacy with women of genius in their hours of domestic ease and inner vulnerability. Shaggy Muses also enchants us with a pack of new friends: Flush, Keeper, Carlo, Foxy, Linky, Grizzle, Pinka, and all the other devoted canines who loved and served these great writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES’S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21ST CENTURY A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "A beautiful book . . . a world of insight into death, grief, art, and love." —Wall Street Journal "A penetrating, moving meditation on loss, comfort, memory . . . Nunez has a wry, withering wit." —NPR "Dry, allusive and charming . . . the comedy here writes itself.” —The New York Times A moving story of love, friendship, grief, healing, and the magical bond between a woman and her dog. When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. Isolated from the rest of the world, increasingly obsessed with the dog's care, determined to read its mind and fathom its heart, she comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them. Elegiac and searching, The Friend is both a meditation on loss and a celebration of human-canine devotion.

Book excerpt: Got wit? We’ve all been in that situation where we need to say something clever, but innocuous; smart enough to show some intelligence, without showing off; something funny, but not a joke. What we need in that moment is wit—that sparkling combination of charm, humor, confidence, and most of all, the right words at the right time. Elements of Wit is an engaging book that brings together the greatest wits of our time, and previous ones from Oscar Wilde to Nora Ephron, Winston Churchill to Christopher Hitchens, Mae West to Louis CK, and many in between. With chapters covering the essential ingredients of wit, this primer sheds light on how anyone—introverts, extroverts, wallflowers, and bon vivants—can find the right zinger, quip, parry, or retort…or at least be a little bit more interesting.

Book Afterglow

Download or read book Afterglow written by Eileen Myles and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skinny's Book of the Year, 2018 In 1990, Myles chose Rosie from a litter on the street, and their connection instantly made an indelible impact on the writer's way of being. Over the course of sixteen years together, Myles was devoted to the pit bull and their linked quality of life. And starting from the emptiness following Rosie's death, Afterglow launches a playful and incisive investigation into the mostly mutually beneficial, sometimes reprehensible power dynamics between pet and pet-owner. At the same time, it reimagines Myles's experiences with alcoholism and recovery, intimacy and mourning, celebrity and politics, spirituality and family history, while joyously transcending the parameters of memoir. Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles's childhood puppet, to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull; from shimmering poetic transcriptions of video footage taken during their walks, to Rosie's final enlightened narration from the afterlife, this totally singular text combines elements of science fiction, screenplay, monologue, and lucid memory to get to the heart of how and why we dedicate our existence to our dogs.

It's like trouble finds him. He dreams of one day having a dog, but his parents refuse. Dogs are a lot of work, and Alex is way too irresponsible to take care of a petor so they think. Alex is determined to prove them wrong. "The best children's stories captivate the imagination while capturing the soul, and that is why your children will adore Big Shaggy Max. Tanenbaum and Zaslow have created a story that is sure to stimulate plenty of meaningful classroom and bedroom discussions about the importance of community and how even little kids can do BIG things!" - Danny Brassell, Ph.D., internationally-acclaimed speaker, bestselling author of 16 books and creator of www.WhyReadBetter.com "This is a wonderful book for all children. I love the intelligent, wonderful happy ending of Big Shaggy Max. As Alex struggles to find an answer, he is empowered to go in the right direction. When he suffers a setback, there is no acting out, just responsible, positive solutions. I love it. " - Nancy Krasne, Former Mayor City of Beverly Hills and school teacher for over 25 years "Big Shaggy Max is a wonderful heart-warming story engraved with themes of personal growth, community and responsibility. Tanenbaum and Zaslow brilliantly illustrate the commitment of pet ownership. It is a must read for any parent and child considering the adoption of a dog or any pet." - Isabel Hacker, Beverly Hills school board member "Let Big Shaggy Max come home with your children and they will delight in this charming story that does more than entertain. Children will learn a valuable lesson in taking responsibility, and the satisfaction that comes when "Little Kids do BIG Things." I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will be sharing it with my young clients who often struggle with becoming responsible. Parents will welcome the opportunity to teach without preaching." - Edith Buie, MFT, child therapist and parenting consultant "Tanenbaum and Zaslow have weaved the concepts of love, responsibility for self and others, care for animals and fun into a delightful story. Alex, a very believable, lovable boy and playful Max capture the reader's heart. I applaud the authors for embedding several life lessons in such an engaging story!" - Dr. Beth Perak, Ph.D (USC), early literacy, associate professor and published author. "Wow! The students in my second grade class loved Big Shaggy Max. They were captivated by the story as well as how Alex solves his problem. Many were inspired to write new stories as a continuation to Big Shaggy Max, a teacher's dream!" - Linda Gregorczyk, 2nd grade teacher for over 30 years "Parents all want to better instill the values of responsibility, compassion and sense of community. This wonderful little book does this in a way that is thoroughly engaging, the type of book I find irresistible. It is a little gem." - Lily Lee Fugier, Olympic figure skater "I loved reading Big Shaggy Max! Not only is this book fun to read, it shows kids they can make their big ideas come true with a little hard work and determination. I value the confidence this builds. This book will be a staple in our household." - Rocio Lugo Bonsall, Philanthropy Leader

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brand new collection of short stories from the slightly barking imagination of Neil Robinson. Each tall tail/tale, he promises, is absolutely true - but then, if that's the case, why has he called them 'Shaggy Dog Stories'? Perhaps because life is one long shaggy dog story and the tales in this collection contain at least a kernel - or maybe that should be kennel - of truth, as best he understands it, anyway. Which is not to say that any of these stories are 'preachy'. Far from it; they are designed, first and foremost, to entertain. Should one or two lead you to ponder on life, truth and relationships, well that's a bonus, surely. So, enjoy exercising each of these shaggy dogs; maybe one will even bring back a stick for you.

Book Jokes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ted Cohen
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-04-15
  • ISBN : 0226112322
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Jokes written by Ted Cohen and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abe and his friend Sol are out for a walk together in a part of town they haven't been in before. Passing a Christian church, they notice a curious sign in front that says "$1,000 to anyone who will convert." "I wonder what that's about," says Abe. "I think I'll go in and have a look. I'll be back in a minute; just wait for me." Sol sits on the sidewalk bench and waits patiently for nearly half an hour. Finally, Abe reappears. "Well," asks Sol, "what are they up to? Who are they trying to convert? Why do they care? Did you get the $1,000?" Indignantly Abe replies, "Money. That's all you people care about." Ted Cohen thinks that's not a bad joke. But he also doesn't think it's an easy joke. For a listener or reader to laugh at Abe's conversion, a complicated set of conditions must be met. First, a listener has to recognize that Abe and Sol are Jewish names. Second, that listener has to be familiar with the widespread idea that Jews are more interested in money than anything else. And finally, the listener needs to know this information in advance of the joke, and without anyone telling him or her. Jokes, in short, are complicated transactions in which communities are forged, intimacy is offered, and otherwise offensive stereotypes and cliches lose their sting—at least sometimes. Jokes is a book of jokes and a book about them. Cohen loves a good laugh, but as a philosopher, he is also interested in how jokes work, why they work, and when they don't. The delight at the end of a joke is the result of a complex set of conditions and processes, and Cohen takes us through these conditions in a philosophical exploration of humor. He considers questions of audience, selection of joke topics, the ethnic character of jokes, and their morality, all with plenty of examples that will make you either chuckle or wince. Jokes: more humorous than other philosophy books, more philosophical than other humor books. "Befitting its subject, this study of jokes is . . . light, funny, and thought-provoking. . . . [T]he method fits the material, allowing the author to pepper the book with a diversity of jokes without flattening their humor as a steamroller theory might. Such a book is only as good as its jokes, and most of his are good. . . . [E]ntertainment and ideas in one gossamer package."—Kirkus Reviews "One of the many triumphs of Ted Cohen's Jokes-apart from the not incidental fact that the jokes are so good that he doesn't bother to compete with them-is that it never tries to sound more profound than the jokes it tells. . . . [H]e makes you feel he is doing an unusual kind of philosophy. As though he has managed to turn J. L. Austin into one of the Marx Brothers. . . . Reading Jokes makes you feel that being genial is the most profound thing we ever do-which is something jokes also make us feel-and that doing philosophy is as natural as being amused."—Adam Phillips, London Review of Books "[A] lucid and jargon-free study of the remarkable fact that we divert each other with stories meant to make us laugh. . . . An illuminating study, replete with killer jokes."—Kevin McCardle, The Herald (Glasgow) "Cohen is an ardent joke-maker, keen to offer us a glimpse of how jokes are crafted and to have us dwell rather longer on their effects."—Barry C. Smith, Times Literary Supplement "Because Ted Cohen loves jokes, we come to appreciate them more, and perhaps think further about the quality of good humor and the appropriateness of laughter in our lives."—Steve Carlson, Christian Science Monitor
