Book excerpt: We track direct public interventions and public holdings in 1,114 financial institutions over the period 2007–17 in 37 countries based on publicly available information. We use aggregate official data to validate this new dataset and estimate the fiscal impact of interventions, including the value of asset holdings remaining in state hands at end-2017. Direct public support to financial institutions amounted to $1.6 trillion ($3.5 trillion including guarantees), with larger amounts allocated to lower capitalized and less profitable banks. As of end-2017, only a few countries had fully divested the initial support they provided during the crisis. Public holdings were divested faster in better capitalized, more profitable, and more liquid banks, and in countries where the economy recovered faster. In countries where the government stake remained high relative to the initial intervention, private investment and credit growth were slower, financial access, depth, efficiency, and competition were worse, and financial stability improved less.

However, soon they will be no more silent in the outcome. The youth population must be taken very serious concerning their aggressive disobedience to parents, their uncaring attitudes towards their peers and civic disorder to institutions Government, both state and local jurisdictions, will need to reassert their methods in developing regional strategies and collective programs that at times will call for a national approach for an effective comprehensive solution to counteract the silent psychopathic nature that are taking hold of our society. It is quite evident from my experience of working in schools, the community and the correctional institutions that violent behavior by youth is very serious and extreme and must be corrected immediately. In times like these, someone must be able to speak about the wrongs of government without fear and limitations. The voice of the sick, lame and the poor must be represented in all chambers of society. As we look around to the greed and corruptions, the crimes, the abuse and violence we can see a decaying state of affairs crashing down with shattering forces ready to destroy the family and our learning institutions. Needless to say, most families are not equipped to keep pace with increasing technological changes that are taking place. The level of advertisement and marketing techniques have cast a double shadow in which the haves are joining the haves and the have nots. Living in the shadows of a rich and sick society is an attempt to look at the five major institutions of civilization with a spiritual vision of hope and institutional reconciliation. Book excerpt: Sonic Interventions makes a compelling case for the importance of sound in theorizing literature, subjectivity and culture. Sound is usually understood as our second sense and – as our belief in a visually dominated culture prevails – remains of secondary interest. Western cultures are considered to be predominantly visual, while other societies are thought to place more importance on the acoustic dimension. This volume questions these assumptions by examining how sound differs from, and acts in relationship to, the visual. It moves beyond theoretical dichotomies (between the visual and the sonic, the oral and literature) and, instead, investigates sonic interventions in their often multi-faceted forms. The case studies deal with political appropriations of music and sounds, they explore the poetic use of the sonic in novels and plays, they develop theoretical concepts out of sonic phenomena, and pertain to identity formation and the practice of mixing in hip hop, opera and dancehall sessions. Ultimately, the book brings to the fore what roles sound may play for the formation of gendered identity, for the stabilization or questioning of race as a social category, and the conception of place. Their intricate interventions beckon critical attention and offer rich material for cultural analysis.
