Book excerpt: In the Year Without a Summer, a group of mad geniuses descended on Geneva. In an attempt to save the body and mind of George Byron, they performed a dreadful and forbidden experiment that forever changed history--and tore their own lives apart. Years later, Byron's daughter Ada has inherited her father's genius. With Charles Babbage, inventor of the analytical engine, she invents the "automatic sciences," allowing the creation of machines that mimic human action, and even human thought. Once again, history has changed. Mechanical spiders perform menial tasks. Intelligent locomotives keep their own time schedules. Massive dirigibles and flying automata have flung the Empire--and piracy--into the sky itself. But even a golden age casts a long shadow, and silent forces are moving in the darkness. Whispers of a conspiracy to destroy the Empire are beginning to surface. The fate of the Geneva experiment and the mad geniuses that created it remains unknown.

Book Conspiracy Theories and Latin American History

Download or read book Conspiracy Theories and Latin American History written by Luis Roniger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic inquiry of conspiracy theories across Latin America. Conspiracy theories project not only an interpretive logic of reality that leads people to believe in sinister machinations, but also imply a theory of power that requires mobilizing and taking action. Through history, many have fallen for the allure of conspiratorial narratives, even the most unsubstantiated and bizarre. This book traces the main conspiracy theories developing in Latin America since late colonial times and into the present, and identifies the geopolitical, socioeconomic and cultural scenarios of their diffusion and mobilization. Students and scholars of Latin American history and politics, as well as comparatists, will find in this book penetrating analyses of major conspiratorial designs in this multi-state region of the Americas.

Book Publications Combined Fake News Conspiracy Theories and Lies Information Laundering In the 21st Century

Download or read book Publications Combined Fake News Conspiracy Theories and Lies Information Laundering In the 21st Century written by and published by Jeffrey Frank Jones. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research, broadly speaking, is to expose the threat that fake news poses to our national security. This thesis answers the question: Can the information laundering model, or a modified version of it, be used to explain how the internet is exploited to spread fake news, and the resulting threat to the United States? I assert that a well-crafted narrative, whether true or false, can be spread rapidly online due to the accessibility and interconnectedness of the internet ecosystem. I then articulate how these narratives can be further accelerated and disseminated when propagandists take advantage of existing processes that improve the customization, ease of access, and availability of information online. I do this by modifying the information laundering model, and then using the new model to examine the interconnectedness of search engines, blogs, social networking platforms, and media/academic outlets, and how these connections can be exploited to launder false or purposefully misleading information into public discourse. Finally, I demonstrate how this process allows adversarial nations, criminals, and malicious actors to increase public discord, undermine democracy, and threaten Americans physical and cognitive security. Contains the following studies: 1. Fake News, Conspiracy Theories, and Lies: An Information Laundering Model for Homeland Security 2. THE COMMAND OF THE TREND: SOCIAL MEDIA AS A WEAPON IN THE INFORMATION AGE 3. PUTIN’S PROPAGANDA WAR: IS HE WINNING? 4. Cyber-Terrorism and Cyber-Crime: There Is a Difference 5. Book Shadow Conspiracy III

Download or read book Shadow Conspiracy III written by Radford, T. and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of the Shadow Conspiracy where the human soul has proven to be measurable and transferable to an automaton, the question arises: is the robot a person? The Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863 freed all the slaves in the states in rebellion against the Federal Government. What if that same document freed ensouled automata as well? This third volume of the Shadow Conspiracy has seven stories that examine the question of humanity. We take you from an observation hot air balloon above the siege of Vicksburg to the soul-grinding Battle of the Crater, from simple farm folk who call themselves Friends, to the mysticism of Marie Laveau and Voudon. Our award winning authors ask the age-old question of what makes us human, what is the nature of slavery, and who deserves freedom? Only you can provide the answers.
