In China, many have heard of shadow puppetry, but few understand the core of the art since it takes many years of practice and experience. This art is not defined by one specific culture, but it is still unique since it combines history and science. Shadow puppetry originated from China around 2000 years ago, but it is disheartening that fewer people are showing a continued interest in the art. However, this should never be an excuse for giving up on inheriting the traditional art; shadow puppetry is a treasure not just for China but for the world. This book collects puppets from the southern region of Liaoning Province. Southern Liaoning includes, among others, Dalian, Yingkou, Anshan, and Dandong. The whole region is not very big, but it has many special customs, a history of inland migration, different battles, and even historical foreign diplomacy. Shadow puppetry is used to record history and life stories. Based on these materials, there are also some related myths that can be shown by shadow puppets. The reader of this book can find explanations and comments for puppets and understand how previous artisans designed puppets and why they designed so. There are details that may be ignored when observing a specific puppet, but actually they are crucial. Cultural heritage like shadow puppetry should never be limited by its origin and cultural background; it should be spread out so that more people can realize the real beauty of it. This book provides only a brief introduction, and its purpose is to spark some interest among readers. Art derives from real life. There is a Chinese quote describing shadow puppetry as "a piece of mouth may carry thousands of stories; a pair of hands may raise years of histories." Falun Gong practitioners were arrested in the hundreds of thousands and asked to recant. If they did not, they were tortured. If they still did not recant, they disappeared. Allegations surfaced in 2006 that the disappeared were being killed for their organs which were sold for large sums mostly to foreign transplant tourists. It is generally accepted that China kills prisoners for organs. The debate is over whether the prisoners who are killed are only criminals sentenced to death or Falun Gong practitioners as well. The authors produced a report concluding that the allegations were true. Bloody Harvest sets out the investigations and conclusions of the authors.

Mark Lewis captures a dynamic era in which the empire reached its greatest geographical extent under Chinese rule, painting and ceramic arts flourished, women played a major role both as rulers and in the economy, and China produced its finest lyric poets in Wang Wei, Li Bo, and Du Fu. The Chinese engaged in extensive trade on sea and land. Merchants from Inner Asia settled in the capital, while Chinese entrepreneurs set off for the wider world, the beginning of a global diaspora. The emergence of an economically and culturally dominant south that was controlled from a northern capital set a pattern for the rest of Chinese imperial history. Poems celebrated the glories of the capital, meditated on individual loneliness in its midst, and described heroic young men and beautiful women who filled city streets and bars. Despite the romantic aura attached to the Tang, it was not a time of unending peace. In 756, General An Lushan led a revolt that shook the country to its core, weakening the government to such a degree that by the early tenth century, regional warlordism gripped many areas, heralding the decline of the Great Tang.

Book excerpt: This book outlines the latest research in Fanshan by the archaeologist, a man-made hathpace cemetery, on which is located the inner city of Liangzhu historical site at northwest area. There are 11 tomb locations discovered in Fanshan as built based on mutual dependency while and after excavation and were found continuously more than 1200 pieces (assemblages) of burial accessories, while at least 1100 pieces of jades were among the unearthed items. In view of the above-mentioned background, Fanshan as royal cemetery is well known for the largest number and variety of exquisite highly polished jades. In addition to prehistoric art, the work also explores the traces of Fanshan royal cemetery in conjunction with a substantial number of photos taken by expert of the historical site, restores the crucial burial objects and funeral rite as well as interprets burial accessories in different ways to discover the identity of the tomb’s occupants such as social class and status and moreover the interlocking system of an organization.
