Book excerpt: The impact of the shadow economy on entrepreneurial entry across countries is analyzed utilising 1998-2005 individual-level Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data and national macro-economic variables. A simple correlation coefficient suggests a positive relationship between the size of the shadow economy and the likelihood of entrepreneurial entry. However, this masks more complex relationships, if, as argued, the shadow economy is an embedded social phenomenon. With appropriate controls and instrumenting for potential endogeneity, the impact of the shadow economy on entry in a linear specification is found to be negative. Further, there is evidence of a U-shaped relationship: entrepreneurial entry is least likely when the shadow economy amounts to about a quarter of gross domestic product (GDP). At the individual level, an extensive shadow economy has a more negative impact on respondents who are risk averse. In addition, in the economies where property rights are stronger, the negative impact of the shadow economy is weaker.

Book excerpt: Our multilevel model about the relationship between opportunity recognition and entrepreneurial entry in transition economies suggests that ethnic fractionalization along with the size of the shadow economy are moderators. Whereas ethnic diversity increases entrepreneurial entries, a large informal sector appears to decrease them. Interestingly, we also find that opportunity recognition may be a more important predictor of entry when diversity is low and when the shadow economy is small. Thus, our study contributes to the literature examining contextual factors on entrepreneurial entry and performance. Succinctly, ethnic diversity can substitute for opportunity recognition, whereas the informal economy increases its importance. Consequently, it appears that ethnic heterogeneity in transition economies may be a valuable driver of entrepreneurial entry even in the absence of opportunity recognition, whereas the size of the informal economy makes opportunity recognition dearer.

This second edition uses new data to reassess currency demand and the model approach to estimate the size of the shadow economy in 151 developing, transition, and OECD countries. This updated edition argues that during the 2000s the average size of the shadow economy varied from 19 per cent of GDP for OECD countries, to 30 per cent for transition countries, to 45 per cent for developing countries. It examines the causes and consequences of this development using an integrated approach to explain deviant behaviour that combines findings from economic, sociological, and psychological research. The authors suggest that increasing taxation and social security contributions, rising state regulatory activities, and the decline of the tax morale are all driving forces behind this growth, and they propose a reform of state public institutions in order to improve the dynamics of the official economy.

The informal economy generally presents an abundant offer in sources (type of distribution and types of actors) and is rich in the diversity of references (in products and services) but it confronts itself to a volatile demand or more precisely a random “willing to pay”. The latter justifies itself by the economic environment characterized among other things by a weak consumer purchasing power and a household confidence that does not aim for the purchasing of pleasures but to those dictated by the strict necessity and the weak occurrence of purchasing based on stimuli where the vector is the publicity or the visual presentation of the sample. In these conditions, building an informal business and succeeding is a challenge that star ts with the assimilation of the basic entrepreneurial notions before secondly dwelling on the levers to improve sales, notably by the mastering of the newest declensions of marketing (an adequate promotion of the quality and performance) more adapted to realities of ethnic or informal entrepreneurship and therefore of the community economy. The youth bulge, defined as the proportion of young people in a population, is recognized as one of the drivers of economic development. However, its relationship with entrepreneurship, particularly when moderated by institutional quality, has not been widely explored. This thesis examines this relationship using two different indicators of entrepreneurship and a dataset covering a wide range of countries across the income spectrum. The study finds evidence supporting a U-shaped relationship between income levels and New Business Density but finds no evidence of such a relationship between income levels and Total Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity. The empirical analysis reveals that youth has a negative effect on New Business Density in low-income countries and a positive effect in high-income countries, while it has a positive effect on entrepreneurial activity across all income levels. The quality of institutions plays a significant moderating role in shaping this relationship. A one percentage point increase in the youth bulge causes an increase in Total Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity by approximately 0.6 percentage points and an increase in the New Business Density index by approximately 0.1 points. These results are robust across all models, with insufficient evidence for the negative effect of the youth bulge on New Business Density in lower-income countries. Additionally, the study provides evidence of a U-shaped relationship between the shadow economy and entrepreneurship, as well as between Governance Indicators and entrepreneurship.
