Book excerpt: Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. Shadows may be insubstantial but they are, nevertheless, an important element in architecture. In prehistoric times we sought shade as a refuge from the hot sun and chilling rain. Through history architects have used shadows to draw, to mould form, to paint pictures, to orchestrate atmosphere, to indicate the passing of time ... as well as to identify place. Sometimes shadow can be the substance of architecture.

Book Re Reading Leonardo

Book excerpt: For nearly three centuries Leonardo da Vinci's work was known primarily through the abridged version of his Treatise on Painting, first published in Paris in 1651 and soon translated into all the major European languages. Here for the first time is a study that examines the historical reception of this vastly influential text. This collection charts the varied interpretations of Leonardo's ideas in French, Italian, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, Flemish, Greek, and Polish speaking environments where the Trattato was an important resource for the academic instruction of artists, one of the key sources drawn upon by art theorists, and widely read by a diverse network of artists, architects, biographers, natural philosophers, translators, astronomers, publishers, engineers, theologians, aristocrats, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and collectors. The cross-cultural approach employed here demonstrates that Leonardo's Treatise on Painting is an ideal case study through which to chart the institutionalization of art in Europe and beyond for 400 years. The volume includes original essays by scholars studying a wide variety of national and institutional settings. The coherence of the volume is established by the shared subject matter and interpretative aim: to understand how Leonardo's ideas were used. With its focus on the active reception of an important text overlooked in studies of the artist's solitary genius, the collection takes Leonardo studies to a new level of historical inquiry. Leonardo da Vinci's most significant contribution to Western art was his interpretation of painting as a science grounded in geometry and direct observation of nature. One of the most important questions to emerge from this study is, what enabled the same text to produce so many different styles of painting?

Nathan Farrugia is in a class by himself. You can’t help but enjoy this adventure." ★★★★★ "What an amazing series. Plenty of action, thrills, gut-wrenching pace, cool weapons/gadgets and well written story." ★★★★★ "Can I give this book 10 stars? It kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last!" ★★★★★ "The Fifth Column series is a tour de force. This amazing series deserves a 5 star review." ★★★★★ "Really humorous, lots of action and the characters are so much fun. Loved it. Fast-paced, entertaining read." ★★★★★ "I picked up a copy of The Chimera Vector thinking it would be a standard adventure novel. I was wrong. From the sands of the Middle East to the streets of New York, Nathan Farrugia has taken the techno-action/spy novel pioneered by David Morrell and given it steroids." ★★★★★ "Farrugia weaves an amazing tale of power, deceit and double crosses. Espionage at its finest, intrigue that will tighten your gut and light every nerve on fire, The Chimera Vector goes far beyond science fiction and becomes a fast-paced mystery-thriller that defies early detection of where we are headed." ★★★★★ "This is going down as one of the best series I've read. And that's saying something. Filled with intense action with enough sci-fi and thriller to make me grin like I found the girl of my dreams." ★★★★★ "Loved it. High paced action thriller it definitely is. You think you know where it is going then the plot twists again. It really kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next." ★★★★★ "An excellent fast paced series that merges science, science fiction and adventure in one well written read that will make it impossible to put down." ★★★★★ "Oh. Wow. What a book. I found The Chimera Vector to be well written, thoroughly entertaining, and at times unbearably suspenseful. I was literally holding my breath." ★★★★★ "All the action that I really enjoyed in the first one and hoped would continue... the sequel blew that out of the ballpark. Amazing book, even better than the first, if that's possible! Love all the characters.” ★★★★★ “Be warned! This series is totally addictive. Don’t start this unless you’re ready for a wild action-packed ride." About the author Nathan M. Book The Shadow of Vesuvius A Life of Pliny

Download or read book The Shadow of Vesuvius A Life of Pliny written by Daisy Dunn and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A wonderfully rich, witty, insightful, and wide-ranging portrait of the two Plinys and their world.”—Sarah Bakewell, author of How to Live When Pliny the Elder perished at Stabiae during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, he left behind an enormous compendium of knowledge, his thirty-seven-volume Natural History, and a teenaged nephew who revered him as a father. Grieving his loss, Pliny the Younger inherited the Elder’s notebooks—filled with pearls of wisdom—and his legacy. At its heart, The Shadow of Vesuvius is a literary biography of the younger man, who would grow up to become a lawyer, senator, poet, collector of villas, and chronicler of the Roman Empire from the dire days of terror under Emperor Domitian to the gentler times of Emperor Trajan. A biography that will appeal to lovers of Mary Beard books, it is also a moving narrative about the profound influence of a father figure on his adopted son. Interweaving the younger Pliny’s Letters with extracts from the Elder’s Natural History, Daisy Dunn paints a vivid, compellingly readable portrait of two of antiquity’s greatest minds.
