Book The Legendary Biographies of Tamerlane

Download or read book The Legendary Biographies of Tamerlane written by Ron Sela and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timur (or Tamerlane) is famous as the fourteenth-century conqueror of much of Central Eurasia and the founder of the Timurid dynasty. His reputation lived on in his native lands and reappeared some three centuries after his death in the form of fictional biographies, authored anonymously in Persian and Turkic. These biographies have become part of popular culture. Despite a direct continuity in their production from the eighteenth century to the present, they remain virtually unknown to people outside the region. This remarkable and rigorous scholarly appraisal of the legendary biographies of Tamerlane is the first of its kind in any language. The book sheds light not only on the character of Tamerlane and how he was remembered and championed by many generations after his demise, but also on the era in which the biographies were written and how they were conceived and received by the local populace during an age of crisis in their own history.

Book Experimental and computational aspects of bioactive proteins from animal venoms An insight into pharmacological properties and drug discovery

Download or read book Experimental and computational aspects of bioactive proteins from animal venoms An insight into pharmacological properties and drug discovery written by Michelle Yap and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal venoms are complex mixtures of bioactive peptides and proteins with diverse pharmacological effects. These active molecules make up the components of venom toxins responsible for many pathological outcomes in snake envenomation. Although venom toxins can be deadly, they can potentially be lifesaving once their respective pharmacological targets and mechanistic actions are better understood. For example, the discovery of captopril from Brazilian viper, Bothrops jararaca venom which has been shown to antagonise angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) for the treatment of hypertension.

Protostars and Planets VI brings together more than 250 contributing authors at the forefront of their field, conveying the latest results in this research area and establishing a new foundation for advancing our understanding of stellar and planetary formation. Continuing the tradition of the Protostars and Planets series, this latest volume uniquely integrates the cross-disciplinary aspects of this broad field. Covering an extremely wide range of scales, from the formation of large clouds in our Milky Way galaxy down to small chondrules in our solar system, Protostars and Planets VI takes an encompassing view with the goal of not only highlighting what we know but, most importantly, emphasizing the frontiers of what we do not know. As a vehicle for propelling forward new discoveries on stars, planets, and their origins, this latest volume in the Space Science Series is an indispensable resource for both current scientists and new students in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, and the study of meteorites.

Book Novel biomarkers in tumor immunity and immunotherapy

Download or read book Novel biomarkers in tumor immunity and immunotherapy written by Takaji Matsutani and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) such as anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 antibodies are highly effective against many types of cancer, yet durable responses are limited to a subset of patients highlighting the need for the development of effective biomarkers to predict prognosis and efficacy. Currently, PD-L1 expression in tumors, microsatellite instability (MSI) or mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR), and tumor mutation burden (TMB) are known as biomarkers for cancer immunotherapy but are not sufficient. Combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy or radiation therapy, as well as diverse therapies targeting intra-tumoral regulatory T cells have been described, but there are currently no unifying biomarkers that are applicable to clinically, a simple, fast, non-invasive method that can yield biomarkers of disease with a minimal adverse effect on patients is desirable. Recent findings suggest that the balancing of effector T cells and regulatory cells in the tumor microenvironment is associated with cancer progression and prognosis. Cells and molecules involved in the control of cancer are complex, and a better understanding of the tumor immune environment will lead to the development of truly effective biomarkers. This topic will focus on novel biomarkers that predict efficacy, prognosis, or the development of adverse events in various cancer immunotherapies, and extensive basic research leading to the development of biomarkers. Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this topic. We expect a wide range of research, not only in serology, genetics, and immunocytochemistry but also in bacterial flora. Research on the development of novel assays and bioinformatics methods is also welcome: • Non-invasive biomarkers for cancer immunotherapy. • Bulk RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, or Rep-seq methods. • Correlation of tumor immune cells with gut microbiota in tumor immunotherapy. • Impact of Teff and Treg balance in the tumor microenvironment on tumor prognosis. • Inflammatory and immune signatures associated with drug response versus resistance in cancer.
