Download or read book System studies of biogas production written by Emma Lindkvist and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biogas has the potential to be part of the transition towards a more sustainable energy system. Biogas is a renewable energy source and can play an important role in modern waste management systems. Biogas production can also help recirculate nutrients back to farmland. Besides all this, biogas is a locally produced energy source with the potential to increase global resource efficiency, since it can lead to more value and less waste, as well as decreased negative environmental effects. However, biogas production systems are complex, including different substrates, different applications for biogas and digestate, and different technology solutions for digestion, pre-treatment and for upgrading the raw gas. To increase the development of biogas production systems, knowledge sharing is a key factor. To increase this knowledge sharing, comprehensible analysis and comparisons of biogas production systems are necessary. Thus, studies are needed to verify the resource efficiency of biogas production systems from different perspectives. The aim of this thesis is to perform a systems analysis of biogas production systems and to explore how to analyse and compare biogas production systems. An additional aim is to study biogas production systems from a systems perspective, with a focus on environment, energy and economy. Studying biogas production systems from different system levels, as well as from different approaches, is beneficial because it results in deeper knowledge of biogas systems and greater opportunities to identify synergies. Systems studies of biogas are important, since biogas systems are often complex and integrated with other systems. In this thesis, biogas systems analyses are performed at different levels. In the widest system study, classifications of different biogas plants are analysed and classifications in different European countries are compared, with the prospect of paving the way for a new common classification for biogas plants in Europe. Today, classifications vary between countries, and hence comparisons of plants in different countries are difficult. In the narrowest system study, a new methodology for analysing energy demand at different biogas production plants has been developed. The aim was to develop a methodology that is applicable for all kinds of biogas plants with energy inputs. The methodology describes the process of analysing energy demand and allocating energy to sub-processes and unit processes. Further, an approach for assessing the resource efficiency of different treatment options for organic waste was designed. The approach includes environmental, economic and energy perspectives, and was applied to five different regions with several food manufacturing companies. A study of treatment options for organic waste from a single food company was also conducted. The results showed that biogas production is a resource-efficient way to treat waste from the food industry. The approach enables a wider analysis of biogas systems, and the results from the applications show the complexity of assessing resource efficiency. It is also shown that it is important to understand that the resource efficiency of a system is always in relation to the substituted system. In this thesis, three different approaches to analysing biogas production systems are presented: categorization, resource efficiency analysis and energy demand analysis. These approaches all contribute to the understanding of biogas systems and can help, in different ways, to increase knowledge about biogas systems in the world. If knowledge about different biogas systems can be easily disseminated, more of the unused potential of biogas production may be realized, and hence more fossil fuels can be replaced within the energy system.

Download or read book Teacher Education and Its Discontents written by Gunnlaugur Magnússon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of essays from researchers and teacher educators from around the world presents innovative approaches to education theory, critical policy analyses, de-colonializing reformulations of teacher education and a “standard of dissensus” for teacher education. This first volume from the International Teacher Education Research Collective (ITERC) illustrates common themes and problems in the politics of education, in particular, standardization, marketization, governance and policy in education, with both country-specific cases and generally formulated theoretical discussions. The book has three primary aims: to illustrate and critique the ethical, epistemological and political discourses shaping teacher education; to identify and unravel the entanglements of politics, knowledge and ethics in teacher education in a range of international settings; and to revitalize teacher education by proposing and exploring alternative modes of thought and practice. The volume contributes to further reflection and in-depth discussion in education, to the formulation of new areas for educational research and to critical resistance to hegemonic discourses of education. Making an important contribution to contemporary education discourse, this book is a useful guide for education researchers and theorists, teacher educators and postgraduate and higher degree research students in education.

The scope is international, with detailed examples and case studies from Europe, North and South America, Central and South Asia, as well as debates of the challenges faced by urbanization, agricultural expansion, national parks and protected areas. The main species covered include bears, wolves, lynx, and leopards. The book provides a novel perspective for advanced students, researchers and professionals in ecology and conservation, wildlife management, human-wildlife interactions, environmental education and environmental social science.
Download or read book Why is it difficult to design innovative IT written by Siri Wassrin and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may seem strange to claim that it is difficult to design innovative information technology (IT) in a time when the technological progress leaps forward like never before. However, despite the numerous opportunities that this rapid progress provides, we often design IT that is similar to existing artifacts, making IT design incremental rather than radical. At the same time, IT innovations are pointed out as crucial to meet the societal challenges we are facing, not least in the public sector, including a growing and older population, increasing demands from citizens and reduced tax revenues. This calls for us to better understand why it is difficult to design innovative IT. Previous research on this topic have mainly focused on human and social aspects, not paying close attention to IT. In this thesis, it is suggested that the sociomaterial theory agential realism can help shed light on the role of IT in innovative IT design, acknowledging the sociomateriality of IT. Thus, the overarching aim of this thesis is to apply agential realism on an empirical case in order to explore and explain why it is difficult to design innovative IT. To fulfill the aim, a qualitative case study was conducted in publicly funded healthcare. The empirical case is an example of an attempt to design innovative IT in a healthcare context. The empirical material was generated through participant observations, including video recordings, and semi-structured interviews. The material was analyzed in several rounds, with and without a theoretical lens. In the agential realist analysis, IT has been viewed as entangled with the world. The analysis focused on what boundaries IT produced and how these boundaries were consequential for what was possible and impossible to design. The thesis illustrates how IT is produced and productive in terms of both matter and meaning, and thus, is agential – IT makes differences in the world. What is possible to design is not only constrained by social structures but by the materiality of IT, what boundaries IT helps produce and the material-discursive practices that enact IT. Innovative IT design means to design material configurations that produce boundaries that are different from what have been enacted before and, thus, deviate from existing material-discursive practices. However, it is difficult to deviate from these since material-discursive practices are agential and define what boundaries are meaningful and legitimate. Hence, it is difficult to design innovative IT since innovative IT design has to both enact boundaries that deviate from agential material-discursive practices and also gain legitimacy. Through this explanation, the thesis makes an explanatory knowledge contribution which differs from and adds to earlier explanations. It also makes a contribution to conceptualizing the IT artifact by emphasizing IT as sociomaterial and providing examples of how IT can be understood as produced, productive, agential and entangled. Finally, the thesis also makes an empirical and methodological contribution in the sense that it demonstrates how an agential realist case study can be conducted in the field of Information Systems.

Download or read book The Governing Evaluation Knowledge Nexus written by Christina Segerholm and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book analyses the interplay between governing, evaluation and knowledge with an empirical focus on Swedish higher education. It investigates the origins, logics, and mechanisms of evaluation and quality assurance reforms and their dynamic interactions with institutional, national and European policy contexts. The chapters report findings from extensive empirical studies that offer detailed insight into the work of governing in higher education, by giving voice to actors at various levels and positions including the ministry, national agency and University employees. Central themes include the influence of European policy, changing system designs, media relations and quality assurance enactments in University institutions. The book also explores the ways in which an emerging professional cadre, labelled qualocrats, enacts and mediates evaluation and quality assurance policy and practice. Taken together, the expanding evaluation machinery in Swedish higher education highlights the pivotal role of knowledge as a governing resource, and points to special features of evaluation as a particular form of practice that makes knowledge work for governing.
