Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Morality From Studies in the Psychology of Sex - Volume 6 By Havelock Ellis An Early 20th Century Study Marriage and Morality Practical Morality Based on Custom Trial Marriage The Theory of the Matriarchate The Historical Tendency Favoring Moral Inequality of Woman The Ambiguous Influence of Christianity Influence of Teutonic Custom and Feudalism The Vanishing Subjection of Woman Inaptitude of the Modern Man to Domineer The Growth of Moral Responsibility in Women The Increase of Women Who Work Invasion of the Modern Industrial Field by Women The Sexual Responsibility of Women and Its Consequences The "Self-Sacrifice" of Women Procreation the Sole Sexual Concern of the State It has been necessary to deal fully with the phenomena of prostitution because, however aloof we may personally choose to hold ourselves from those phenomena, they really bring us to the heart of the sexual question in so far as it constitutes a social problem. If we look at prostitution from the outside, as an objective phenomenon, as a question of social dynamics, it is seen to be not a merely accidental and eliminable incident of our present marriage system but an integral part of it, without which it would fall to pieces. This will probably be fairly clear to all who have followed the preceding exposition of prostitutional phenomena. There is, however, more than this to be said. Not only is prostitution to-day, as it has been for more than two thousand years, the buttress of our marriage system, but if we look at marriage, not from the outside as a formal institution, but from the inside with relation to the motives that constitute it, we find that marriage in a large proportion of cases is itself in certain respects a form of prostitution.

Book Sexual Deceit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kelby Harrison
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2013-03-14
  • ISBN : 0739177060
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Sexual Deceit written by Kelby Harrison and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Deceit is an extended ethical analysis of the phenomenon of sexual identity passing — i.e. socially presenting as X, when one understands oneself as Y, where the variables represent any contemporary sexual identity — alongside identity passing in the contexts of race, gender, and briefly, religion and class. The analysis of passing utilizes and challenges traditional moral understandings of identity falsification, complicating our understandings of moral obligations under systemic oppression. Tracing the intervention of social construction theory on contemporary political understandings of LGBT communities and activism, Sexual Deceit argues against social construction models of identity — notably performativity, promulgated by the work of Judith Butler and consumed and repeated by many scholars and theory educated queer people. A new model of identity is constructed, based on a phenomenological concept of style that provides for a socially adjustable yet rooted notion of sexual identity. The ethical implications of sexual identity passing are considered in the context of eschatological images of social justice and within practical matters such as military service, leadership, and sexual harassment law.

Book Masculinity and Morality

Download or read book Masculinity and Morality written by Larry May and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a morally responsible man? Psychology and the law have offered reasons to excuse men for acting aggressively. In these philosophically reflective essays, Larry May argues against standard accounts of traditional male behavior, discussing male anger, paternity, pornography, rape, sexual harassment, the exclusion of women, and what he terms the myth of uncontrollable male sexuality. While refuting the platitudes of the popular men's movement, his book challenges men to reassess and change behavior that has had detrimental effects on the lives of women and of men. In May's view, the key to solving many problems is to understand how individual actions may combine to produce large-scale, harmful consequences. May is eager to reconceptualize male roles in ways that build on men's strength rather than rendering them androgynous. Each chapter in his book suggests strategies to effect changes based on May's views on the nature of moral responsibility. Examining separatism and the socialization of youth in athletics and the military, specifically at Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel, May analyzes the moral implications of the way all-male environments are constructed. Rejecting the standard arguments for them, he speculates about the positive ways they might be used to transform the socialization of young men.

Book Responsibility and Control

Download or read book Responsibility and Control written by John Martin Fischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, systematic theory of moral responsibility. The authors explore the conditions under which individuals are morally responsible for actions, omissions, consequences, and emotions. The leading idea in the book is that moral responsibility is based on 'guidance control'. This control has two components: the mechanism that issues in the relevant behavior must be the agent's own mechanism, and it must be appropriately responsive to reasons. The book develops an account of both components. The authors go on to offer a sustained defense of the thesis that moral responsibility is compatible with causal determinism.

Book An Intersectional Feminist Theory of Moral Responsibility

Download or read book An Intersectional Feminist Theory of Moral Responsibility written by Michelle Ciurria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an intersectional feminist approach to moral responsibility. It accomplisheses four main goals. First, it outlines a concise list of the main principles of intersectional feminism. Second, it uses these principles to critique prevailing philosophical theories of moral responsibility. Third, it offers an account of moral responsibility that is compatible with the ethos of intersectional feminism. And fourth, it uses intersectional feminist principles to critique culturally normative responsibility practices. This is the first book to provide an explicitly intersectional feminist approach to moral responsibility. After identifying the five principles central to intersectional feminism, the author demonstrates how influential theories of responsibility are incompatible with these principles. She argues that a normatively adequate theory of blame should not be preoccupied with the agency or traits of wrongdoers; it should instead underscore, and seek to ameliorate, oppression and adversity as experienced by the marginalized. Apt blame and praise, according to her intersectional feminist account, is both communicative and functionalist. The book concludes with an extensive discussion of culturally embedded responsibility practices, including asymmetrically structured conversations and gender- and racially biased social spaces. An Intersectional Feminist Approach to Moral Responsibility presents a sophisticated and original philosophical account of moral responsibility. It will be of interest to philosophers working at the crossroads of moral responsibility, feminist philosophy, critical race theory, queer theory, critical disability studies, and intersectionality theory.
