El análisis de las primeras culturas y de las culturas clásicas muestra tanto la diversidad de las conductas sexuales como la complejidad de sus formas. En este libro se expone el desarrollo de los saberes sexuales a lo largo de la historia, desde sus comienzos a la actualidad. Siguiendo el hilo de las diversas épocas se presentan las creencias y conocimientos sexuales atendiendo especialmente a la formación de las ideas en los siglos xix y xx y los desarrollos actuales. Se presta especial atención a la influencia que el cristianismo de los primeros siglos ha tenido en la formación de la sexualidad occidental. Se muestra cómo a lo largo de todo el proceso histórico, la sexualidad se configura no solo por los conocimientos y creencias, sino por las formas que el erotismo ha ido desarrollando en cada momento. Se evidencia cómo la Ilustración y el Romanticismo dieron lugar a cambios marcados que supusieron nuevas mentalidades tales como la aparición del derecho al placer, la sexualidad libertina y a formas emocionales de la experiencia sexual. Más tarde, con la irrupción de la modernidad, la industrialización y los cambios económicos y sociales, emerge la sociedad burguesa, que hace de la sexualidad una conducta privada y convencional que lleva al victorianismo sexual, al mismo tiempo que provoca la aparición de la psiquiatría sexual, el estudio de las perversiones y también los inicios de la sexología como disciplina científica. Los desarrollos recientes plantean las temáticas actuales sobre la diversidad sexual, la formación de la ciencia sexual, el desarrollo de los movimientos y políticas activistas y los procesos de globalización sexual. No pretendo afirmar que la prohibición del sexo sea un engaño, sino que lo es convertirla en el elemento fundamental y constituyente a partir del cual se podría escribir la historia de lo que ha sido dicho a propósito del sexo en la época moderna.

Book excerpt: Examining the social, medical and cultural history of male homosexuality in Spain, this book looks at it from the time homosexuality came to be an issue of medical, legal and cultural concern. Research into homosexuality in Spain is in its infancy. The last ten or fifteen years have seen a proliferation of studies on gender in Spain but much of this work has concentrated on women's history, literature and femininity. In contrast to existing research which concentrates on literature and literary figures, "Los Invisibles" focuses on the change in cultural representation of same-sex activity of through medicalisation, social and political anxieties about race and the late emergence of homosexual sub-cultures in the last quarter of the twentieth century. As such, this book constitutes an analysis of discourses and ideas from a social history and medical history position. Much of the research for the book was supported by a grant from the Wellcome Trust to research the medicalisation of homosexuality in Spain.
