Book Sexual Offences Against Children in India

Download or read book Sexual Offences Against Children in India written by Sonali Swetapadma and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Offences Against Children in India examines the evolution of the law pertaining to sexual violence against children, the judicial decisions since the inception of the POCSO Act till date with respect to aspects of the POCSO Act and the best practices from other developed jurisdictions for handling cases and victims of child abuse. Despite being prevalent, violence against children is often hidden or underreported, though its impact is widely acknowledged. In a country like India the vocabulary to communicate around sexuality and sexual abuse is almost non-existent. India has seen its journey from having no law on sexual abuse of children to having a “special” law in the form of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act 2012 (POCSO Act). This book demystifies the problem of sexual violence against children in India pre- and post-POCSO Act. There is also a novel attempt to examine the implementation of the POCSO Act in the eastern Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, and if its objectives were being attained – in content, in implementation, and in impact. This book will be useful for police, judiciary and government officials, scholars, and researchers studying comparative aspects of dealing with sexual offence cases against children.

Book Bitter Chocolate

Download or read book Bitter Chocolate written by Pinki Virani and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that challenges our notions of family honour and morality Sometime, somewhere, the conspiracy of silence around Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) in Indian homes had to be shattered. This path-breaking book"the first of its kind in the country and subcontinent"attempts to give that sexually abused child a powerful voice. It provides damning disclosures about men, and some women, in middle and upper-class families who sexually abuse their children, then silence them into submission. Based on studies, reports and investigation, this book reveals that a minimum of twenty per cent of girls and boys under the age of sixteen are regularly being sexually abused; half of them in their own homes, by adults who have the child's trust. In Bitter Chocolate, journalist and best-selling author Pinki Virani travels across the country to record the testimonies of the police, doctors, child psychologists, mental health professionals, social workers, lawyers and the traumatized victims themselves. The book opens with an account"brave and devoid of self-pity"of the author's own experience. Going beyond blaming, Pinki Virani then proceeds with her insightful analysis of the issue in three notebooks. The first spells out what constitutes CSA, why and how this happens, its devastating after-effects which haunt the victims as they grow into adulthood. The second notebook describes these effects through two real-life stories of women who were betrayed as children by men of their family. The third provides practical solutions on how to counter CSA, including a framework involving the law, the parent and their child. A special chapter addresses adults who have never before disclosed their sexual abuse as children. Plus: a nationally coordinated helpline. Accessible yet comprehensive, Bitter Chocolate is written for the young parent and guardian, principal and teacher, judge and police, lawyer and public prosecutor, teenager and tomorrow's citizen.

Book Childhood Betrayed

Download or read book Childhood Betrayed written by Loveleen Kacker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No social problem is as universal as the oppression of the child. No slave was ever so much the property of his master as the child is of his parent. Never were the rights of man ever so disregarded as in the case of the child. - Maria MontessoriIn India, where even stones and trees are worshipped, children are routinely beaten, neglected and abused. The daily news is rife with stories of abuse and neglect, often perpetrated in the name of discipline or protection. The Nithari case, female foeticide, instances of child marriage and the sexual abuse of minors - the statistics are frightening. Lakhs of children are robbed of childhood, and India is doing little to remedy that. While the government now acknowledges education and nutrition as the essential entitlements of children, there has been little legislation or initiative to safeguard their most fundamental rights. Child protection is still nowhere on the nation's radar.Loveleen Kacker distilled several years of research to write this cogent and powerful volume on why child abuse and neglect happens and how it affects children in India. She examines physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and maltreatment, especially of the girl child. Bringing real-life instances and case studies together with Kacker's own work on the rights of children, this is a guide for parents, policy makers, schoolteachers, paediatricians, childcare specialists - indeed, anyone with a stake in the welfare of minors. A timely and much-needed addition to the literature on child rights, Childhood Betrayed is also a call for change - nay a call to arms.

Book An Empirical Investigation into Child Abuse and Neglect in India

Download or read book An Empirical Investigation into Child Abuse and Neglect in India written by Sibnath Deb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of child abuse and neglect globally in general terms and with empirical evidence from Puducherry, India. The study unearths the reality concerning child safety and raises a number of questions about child safety measures at the institutional and family levels. It recommends evidence-based and culture-specific preventive measures for child protection. The empirical evidence presented here provides important and useful information to school administrators on the issues of child abuse and neglect, for them to take evidence-based protective measures both at school and at home. For cross-cultural comparison, the findings are of interest to international scholars and academics. This work is useful for policy makers, educators, NGO personnel, child rights activists and opinion leaders in government departments dealing with children, and for researchers in the fields of psychology, social work, nursing, pediatric, forensic medicine, and public health.
