Book Women Therapists Experiences with Military Culture and Sexual Harassment in Veterans Health Administration Settings a Grounded Theory Analysis

Download or read book Women Therapists Experiences with Military Culture and Sexual Harassment in Veterans Health Administration Settings a Grounded Theory Analysis written by Katelyn Meade and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Veterans Health Administration (VA) is the United States' largest unified healthcare provider, but little is known about the experiences of the professionals who work there. In all healthcare settings, and in the helping professions in particular, women are at an increased risk of victimization. Therefore, the current study sought to better understand the workplace climate of VA settings for women therapists, including experiences of being victimized by their clients. Specifically, using grounded theory, this study examined three questions: 1) In what ways does military culture make its ways into VA settings? 2) what is unique about VA culture that presents women therapists with challenges when working with clients? 3) what are the experiences of being sexually harassed, assaulted, or stalked (by clients or in general?) in this sample of VA women therapists? The current study found that all participants experienced the VA culture as impacted by military culture, both in structure of administration and in interpersonal client interactions. Additionally, participants faced challenges related to the integration of military culture, particularly rigid hierarchy. Participants also experienced challenges related to working in male-dominated settings, another factor related to military culture. Further, all participants experienced at least one instance of sexual harassment, though not all participants identified these experiences as sexual harassment. The emerging theory suggests that women's experiences of sexual harassment influence their labeling of an event as sexual harassment, their own responses to the harassing experience, and the institution's response to the harassing incident. The latter three factors mutually influence one another and may impact continued experiences of harassment in the future. Limits and implications are discussed. Keywords: Veteran's Health Administration, military culture, women, workplace harassment " -- Abstract

Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Women Veterans

Download or read book Women Veterans written by G.L.A. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women who fight in wars also have to fight for their right to do so. But what are the obstacles impeding their progress in achieving equal status as both active service members and as veterans? This book, written by a team of female veterans and military scholars, demonstrates the ways in which women service members and veterans experience a unique set of challenges when attempting to both honorably serve their country and reintegrate into civilian society following military service. These challenges include – but are not limited to – discrimination, staggering rates of suicide, and barriers to obtaining treatment for military sexual trauma and other critical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Women Veterans: Lifting the Veil of Invisibility examines current service-related policies and gender in the military’s hierarchical power structure. Here, a confluence of white male privilege and entitlement, the culture of domination, and the effeminization of the enemy manifest themselves as a backlash against women, calling into question a woman’s agency and her very status as a citizen. Special attention in the book is paid to the civil-military divide, representative bureaucracy, and the function of the military and civilian justice systems. Moreover, the need for appropriate healthcare policies and structures is examined within a ‘wicked problems’ framework. The authors conclude that the responsibility for women veterans, and all veterans for that matter, must become a matter of compelling government interest. This ground-breaking book is required reading for practitioners of public policy and administration with an interest in military and veterans affairs, public health, NGOs and activist groups, as well as scholars of gender and public service, public personnel management, and nonprofit management.

Book Stop Street Harassment

Download or read book Stop Street Harassment written by Holly Kearl and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using groundbreaking studies, news stories, and interviews, this book underscores that there will never be gender equity until men stop harassing women in public spaces—and it details strategies for achieving this goal. Street harassment is generally dismissed as harmless, but in reality, it causes women to feel unsafe in public, at least sometimes. To achieve true gender equality, it must come to an end. Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women draws on academic studies, informal surveys, news articles, and interviews with activists to explore the practice's definition and prevalence, the societal contexts in which it occurs, and the role of factors such as race and sexual orientation. Perhaps more crucially, the book makes clear how women experience street harassment—how they feel about and respond to it—and the ways it negatively impacts lives. But understanding is only a beginning. In the second half of the book, readers will find concrete strategies for dealing with street harassers and ways to become involved in working to end this all-too-common violation. Educators, counselors, parents, and other concerned individuals will discover resources for teaching about harassment and modeling behavior that will help prevent harassment incidents.
