Book Sexual Minority Stress Health Beliefs and Self efficacy

Download or read book Sexual Minority Stress Health Beliefs and Self efficacy written by Ronald Del Castillo and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need for research that examines cultural factors as well as theoretical constructs of health behavior to understand HIV-related risk among Asian and Pacific Islander (API) gay and bisexual men. The present study examined the effects of sexual minority stress, health beliefs, and self-efficacy on sexual risk behaviors. The online-based sample was recruited through a social networking website and included API gay and bisexual men (mean age = 28.5 years, SD = 6.77; 66% gay; 71% U.S.-born). The results showed that prejudice events, perceived susceptibility to HIV infection, and self-efficacy predicted condom use during anal intercourse with a male partner in the 3 months prior to participation in the study. However, stigma, internalized homophobia, and perceived severity of HIV did not have significant associations with condom use. The findings suggest that a multifaceted approach to prevention and intervention is needed to maximize outreach, education, and research efforts.

Book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population

Download or read book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population written by Stephen E. Doyle (M.S.N.) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to test for factors predicting AIDS-preventive safe sexual behavior, a battery comprising a demographic questionnaire, an AIDS Self-Efficacy questionnaire, a Sexual Behavior Index, and an AIDS Awareness Survey were administered to 118 undergraduate students (ages 19-28, 93% African American) at a predominantly African American state-supported university in the southeastern US. Possible predictors tested were gender, self-efficacy, perceived self-efficacy while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and source of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Under multiple linear regression, there were statistically significant correlations between each of these predictor variables and safe sexual behavior. Under a full model regression, self-efficacy was the only significant factor to predict safe sex practices. The study supported the effectiveness of the university's system of programs to provide HIV information to students. Implications for nursing are discussed.

Book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Amongst South Asian International Students at the University of Central Oklahoma

Download or read book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Amongst South Asian International Students at the University of Central Oklahoma written by Kruti S. Chaliawala and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of sexual health knowledge among international students is multi-dimensional and is impacted by culture, society, parental guidance, environment, migration, and belongingness to the new culture. The topics of concern include lack of knowledge regarding reproductive anatomy, safer sex, the concept of consensual sex, pregnancy, abortion, and many others. Engaging in risky sexual behavior is linked with the lack of knowledge and attitudes towards sexual health. The current study aims to explore the sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of South-Asian international students at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Students for this study were recruited from the UCO international student pool. Students from India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal were asked to participate. Participants were asked to fill out the survey online through the Qualtrics system. A Kendall's Tau-b correlation was run to determine the relationship between attitude and knowledge/behavior amongst 34 participants. There was a moderate, positive correlation between sexual health attitude and sexual health knowledge/behavior, which was statistically significant at ([tau-b] = 0.531, p = 0.043). The results coincide with the literature that better sexual health knowledge is correlated with less risky behavior and a positive attitude towards sex and sexual health. The results of this study will give a better understanding of the needs related to the sexual health of international students at UCO.
